- Today we'll be making some "gingerbread" cookie ornaments using DAS Air Dry Clay! It's a fun and easy project that will add some homemade flair to your Christmas tree this year.
*SAFETY FIRST: If you use your cookie cutters for actual cookies, please wash all the clay off carefully before using them for food purposes.

Use a silicone baking mat or any silicone mat, wax paper, or parchment paper underneath and paint very carefully while wet to avoid shrinking and cracking. You can also dry on a drying rack... Then, decorate after dry.

These would go a lot easier if you roll them out and cut them on parchment paper. They won't stick so bad. Even a silicone mat would be better.
Yeah, I tried parchment paper but the backs were all wrinkly looking. I bet a silicone mat would work great! Thanks for your comment 😊
I had tried mine on parchment about a decade ago and for both the paper clay and the type of air dry clay that is more the texture of potter's clay, it made them severely wrinkly on the backs. I had even gone to a lot of effort to tape down the parchment paper (which is hard because it doesn't adhere to most tape! 🤣) AND I weighed it down with heavy books.
I think what happened was that as the clay dried, it shrunk and pulled the parchment with it, slowly wadding it up and embedding it in deep wrinkles in the ornament backs. I thought my problem was that they were too thick, so I made ones that were about 1/8" rather than 1/4", and the skinny ones ended up with really wrinkly backs AND curled up edges. There was nothing I could do to flatten them back out.
So I don't know what product might make this process easier-you might be right about the silicone mat-but hopefully I'll save some others the week-long headache I went through with parchment paper! 🤷♀️
I use a silicone baking sheet, that is not sticky like the glass surface :))))

Hi Rachel! I have a few questions for you.
1) Can you add the paint to the clay and mix it up?
2) When you apply the sealer is that to seal the paint?
3) Can you seal the back also?

You can use puff paint! You can just buy white 😊

@@TheDottingCenter you can also make paint out of cinnamon and elmers glue. It might need a little water to thin it.
