- James and Jeanette Gurney visit the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome for a plein-air painting (plane-air?) session around a World War 1 biplane with the American Society of Aviation Artists. Gurney sketches Don Meadows standing at his easel, with a Fokker D VII in the background.

Painters: "I'll paint that airplane".
James: "I'll paint that painter painting the airplane".
The palette seems broader on this than usual. I really like the juicy, saturated, tertiary colors you've used
Who knew the Association of Aviation Artists was a thing? Now we do! I love that arm and elbow plus the folds in the tee shirt. I find it amusing that you chose to paint the painters rather than the planes. You are king of romancing the ordinary!
I appreciate the amount of effort you put into every detail from painting to production. Thank you!
I've started painting again after 50 years, thanks to you and Jeanette's channel. I'm busy renovating a house in France but I set aside some time every week to get lost in gouache and I really love it.. Thanks again for your enthusiasm, it's infectious!
I want this kind of life as an artist when I retire! 🤗
James, it was so great meeting you at Old Rhinebeck on Saturday. Thanks so much for coming out and painting us and painting with us. I enjoyed talking shop with you!
It was a treat to meet you and Marc and the group. And so nice to see your original paintings and to talk a bit about painting.
@@JamesGurney what Russ said! I hope you'll join us again when we return. Thank you so much!!!
I never knew there was an American Society of Aviation Artists, that's amazing! If I were an American and knew anything about painting I would join, seems to be just about the coolest thing ever!
Maybe you can join anyway? As an American I would welcome any artist with an appreciation for aviation.
As an artist who used to fly taildraggers this video is a treat on every level. I can’t believe how quickly you rendered Don so well. Great video and audio quality as well.
I love the sculpting of that t-shirt with light and shadow and colour. If you know it, you can see the classical example of a ball lit by one light source, on a refecting surface. The difficulty is applying that knowledge loosely.
It seems that artists make the best models of form for art, since they always return to the same pose. I think James and Jeanette have created a new sub-field in art: Meta-Art. The art of those who create art. :-)
I've never seen an artist quite like you who can take a relatively mundane scene and somehow turn it into an intriguing piece of art! As well, some of the paintings of the various planes were awesome! Thanks for sharing this adventure.
Russel - a sharp-dressed man.
Not for the first time, I feel like I've got some practise ahead of me to describe the folds and forms of a t-shirt with (seemingly) so few deft strokes. Great work, the two of you.
The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is such a cool place! They used to host a steampunk festival there. Our booth was set up right next to the runway and it was a blast seeing how acrobatic those antique planes are!
Hi James and Jeanette you guys find the coolest places to go! I love seeing the contrasts in your styles of painting and your different points of view. Great work as always. Hugs, Julie 🥰
I absolutely LOVE how both Jeannette and James used the same phrase of 'the artist always returns to the same pose', like they are so telepathically and artistically in tune with each other. It's likely James used those words afterwards, in the editing of the video after Jeanette said it when asked about her painting, but the fact that they both painted an artist painting a plane without the other knowing (notice the surprise in James' voice when he sees her artwork) confirms my theory.
Sir, with complete and utmost sincerity, you are absolutely incredible. Your skill and vision reignite my passion for art, and each new video of yours I watch leaves me anxious to pick up a paintbrush again. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work with us, God bless you! 💖💖💖
Great painting and this was lots of fun!
I LOVE to watch you paint...I could watch these videos for hours (and I do hahaha). You have such a wonderful ability to paint what you see. Most impressive and your technique is outstanding!
That used to be my pet peeve, not having models go back to “Exactly” same pose after breaks... everyone always said “Good”, and I was like “Are you kidding?” This helps a lot!!!👍
terrific! I had never heard of the American Society of Aviation Artists, but I'm going to look them up. I always am interested in those who do historical art. So cool!
I think there are an American Society for almost everything.
@@garthok6224 we should start the American association of CZcams commentators! 😂
should have been AAAA
american assiciation of aviation artists
Perfect timing, I just started planing more planes two days ago when you upload this video. I quickly gain new airplane mechanic friends 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 to gain access to paint all kids of planes.
Absolutely love your channel and utterly support your hardwork !
Kudos to your artwork !!!
Mark Poole’s art is amazing. I fell in love with art as a kid after seeing paintings by Keith Ferris. I have discovered so many new influences from that initial spark.
And it was nice you painted my brother in the blue shirt. Who is a member of that group
Thank you!
I love your art style and videos! Great work on the painting.
I remember seeing a pre-WW1 triplane fly here in 1968. It had only two speeds: full throttle and idle. To cruise along, it alternated between the two every few seconds -- RRRRRRRRRR bububububub RRRRRRRRRR bububububub... What a great setting for painters!
Jim&Jeannette is the most cool duo on CZcams
Your airport painting made me aware of your work so this one helps with that theme!
Beautiful as always
Super! An artist painting a Fokker D-VII at Rhinebeck. What a subject. Oh how I miss that place.
Thanks for sharing your gifts!
Boy! I LOVED watching you paint that man’s shirt! I also really like Jeannette’s painting of the artist too!
Wow, the man called you a legend James! Its true no doubt. Hopefully you acknowledged him when he complimented you. Great video
Loving these vids James❤️
Stunning
Bravo! And lovely to see both of you and both works :-)
True inspiration, James. Thanks for these
Magical!
Love it that you both painted fellow artists. Always enjoy your videos especially spending time with you both. Thanks for the view.
Thank you James and Jeanette. You both make great art, and I love your videos. You inspire me to be a better artist!
Wow! You really are one of the people I look up to when it comes to painting! Amazing as always!
Stunning work as always. I learn so much from watching you do your sketchbook videos. Thank you.
Every video is a piece of art
Nice! You made it look easy. 🏆
Great sharing friend😃beautiful👍😃❤️
Really enjoy and learn a lot about WC when watching your videos, but I'm intimidated nonetheless because you are so good. 👨🎨
watching you paint looks like easy but when I try it's not as easy as it looks, it's really amazing
Amazing work as always... and great outro music! :)
People's smart phones must have picked up my conversations with my roommate. She will be flying a Pave Hawk and is going into the Air Force up in Alaska. I am an artist, and normally, love landscapes and people......but this popped up, today.....and I said to myself.....hmmmmmm. I might WANT to try this......in homage to my father, who flew, and knew those astronauts from way back in Melbourne, Fla in the 60's. Exciting times.......and perhaps and old DC3, too.
Great subject!!!!
nice video! always so relaxing
Looking good . Both of you
you are such a legend i dont know how you get realistic values like this with watercolor its an extremely unreliable medium in my experience. love your videos. seen them all.
Wow!
Quedaron detrás del motivo principal, que era el avión. Pero el resultado fue un gran retrato de espalda del pintor que estaba enfrente de usted; muy buen gouache 👏🏻♥️👏🏻♥️👏🏻
Great minds behaving alike? Today I was at The Belport Aerodrome on L.I., the oldest grass strip in America. It was family day so every hanger was open with many historic biplanes both posing and or flying. a I was soaked up the atmosphere and painted a Taylorcraft and a Stearman 1942. Beautiful planes and a gourgeous September day!)
Jesus! Wonderful paintings!
Legend...
nice as always +++
an artist at the peak of his powers.
Imagine their shock when they realized that you threw oil paint at their shirts and hair. Subscribed
really like the intro animation
Interesting... aircraft reportage!!! Never even thought of this... now I want to know what other groups are out there!
There are at least the following:
by interest: marine, botanical, animal, portraits, aviation (shown here), landscape, etc.
by medium: watercolors, colored pencil, oils, acrylic etc.
By style: realism, impressionism etc.
Too many
@@garthok6224 thanks!

Maybe i should start to paint again
Beautiful video and such an inspiring community! May I ask what is the material you used? I am struggling to find a sketchbook that responds well to watercolour. Is that a moleskine or something else? Thanks!
It's a Pentalic Aqua Journal.
sometimes i wonder what james would comment about me if he painted me candidly
Painting in plane sight, holding on to your joystick, a paint brush. You should put one of those signs up," DANGER ARTIST AT WORK, WET PAINT". There is always the danger, I might flick the odd bit of paint, out of the blue.
hy m artist too from heaven on earth kashmir how can i join aviation artists society m crazy to paint the aviations events there can i? if yes then how?
can we pretend that airplanes in the night skies like shooting stars 🎶
🙂
Hahahaha
You sound like you have a great singing voice. Do you?
I like how you get aggressive with your darks.
He is not the Mark Poole who did a lot of Magic the Gathering fantasy artwork in the 90's is he?
No, he's Marc Poole with a C, linked in description.
@@JamesGurney Oh, I see. Thanks Mr. Gurney!
Planeair they call it
Ding ding ding! We gotta winner, folks -- no need for more comments.
First one here ! ☝️
Hi James,
Do you ask permission before you start painting someone?
No. With a group of artists, no one minds if you sketch them. Don and Barbara just laughed and enjoyed seeing what we did. That was Don holding my sketch at the end.
*paints airplane*

I thought jigsaw puzzles should be formed by the corners first lmao
What the heck is an ulna?
It's the bone that goes from your elbow to your wrist, the one you rest your arms on when you're at a desk.
You're learning plus you're a vampire! So, you have centuries of learning.

nice sinewy arm lol
Жена лучше рисует 🤣👍
I thought this was actually going to be a video about painting airplanes. Dumb me :(
mr. gurney, have you ever thought about how an artist can say things such as "i really love his elbow" and it doesn't sound bizarre? I bet non-artists think we're just speaking nonsense when artists say stuff like that. But we just get it haha
