There are two classes of language.
I don't mean English, Spanish, Chinese etc. All those languages go into one category, then all the same ones go into another category.
Those category are the language of the fallen/satanic and the language of the perfect/heavenly.
So one word often has two meanings depending on which of these two points of views these words are being used.
This relates to what Jonathan was saying about the suffering of Jesus and his acceptance of being put in the lowest position for our sake yet it later being revealed to by the most holy.
An example of what I mean by the two languages would be when the word/concept of 'servant' is used in a fallen/satanic mindset, this refers to a person who is below or under or lesser. But when the word/concept of 'servant' is used with a perfect/holy mindset, it is referring to the being who is higher and greater. This is why Jesus said he came to serve and why he washed the feet of the disciples and exhorted them to do likewise.
When we think about it, the parental, nurturing soul takes the low and even servant position gladly and from love.
In a satanic mindset, the weaker/junior obey and serve the strong and the strong receive all and give nothing. This is the case in despotic societies or mafia like groups.
But in a heavenly mindset, the strong/senior serve and nurture the weak/junior and the junior respect and allow themselves to be guided by the stronger/senior. We see this in the way adult parents serve their little children from love. They even wipe excrement from them daily and with care and love and without being commanded or coerced. In turn, the children respect and follow/obey their parents. We see the same with the teacher-student relationship. The teacher serves the children and the children listen to and obey the teachers. We even see this with the human/owner-pet relationship. The dog obeys the master but who is serving who? The master cleans after the dog, works to earn money to feed and house the dog and even pic up the dog's waste.
In a satanic mindset, the object both serves and obeys the subject. The satantic subject receives all and the object receives nothing. But in a heavenly mindset, the object respects and follows the guidance of the subject but the subject loves and serves the object. The heavenly object receives love and nurturing so they may grow and the heavenly subject receives a parental satisfaction of joy from seeing their love manifest in beauty within the object as the object develops in a wholesome way as a result of the care they have received.
This is why many words have two and sometimes opposing meanings.
Satan and the satanic, fallen mind can not conceive of the joy of serving but the heavenly heart is the heart of a parent and the heart of a parent is a nurturing, servant's heart.
Jesus was always a servant and as he himself said, there is no greater love than to sacrifice ones life for the other. It was just fallen hearts at that time and even some today that fail to see the holiness of serving.

@@RunninUpThatHillh This isn't exactly what you are asking for, but I suggest a thematic approach to begin with. You could start with something like Fr. Mike Schmitz's podcast Bible In a Year to get familiar with broad outlines. Then move to deeper stuff like Lord of Spirits podcast. Best of all, start attending a Church that follows a liturgical calendar (if you aren't already) like Catholic or Orthodox. Scripture has a way of unfolding in layers rather than a linear format like a text book. Because our worldview is so far from the worldview out of which Scripture comes, we have to work a little harder and be a little more patient. Christ's peace!

7:45 I have been really intrigued by this idea of the fringe or the outcast being redeemed and becoming the center...that's a pattern all through the Bible. David is an example of this. John the Forerunner. Esau. Samson. It's those characters who were described as "ruddy" or "red". This ties in with the four women who were mentioned in Christ's genealogy as well. Gentiles being redeemed, and playing a central role in the spreading of the Gospel. It's all so beautiful.

Jonathan, have you thought of systematizing your insights on scripture and creating a ‘Symbolic World Bible Commentary’? What with the reach of your blog, the cross pollination with JP and the others you mentioned, this might be a paradigm altering work which could be a real touchstone for many people. Within it you could certainly cite the Fathers or recent and contemporary writers and thinkers, but the ability to distill all that down is what makes your contribution so unique and timely.

Im sitting at home, clapping while I am watching this because I am so excited that its making me want to pick up my Bible again. My Protestant background drilled in me to read my Bible everyday, but I barely could understand it, and even when I did, it was a literal interpretation which was pretty boring. But now I want to read my Bible again and see it a completely new, mind blowing way!

"Anthropologists have often described what happens to a primitive society when its spiritual values are exposed to the impact of modern civilization. Its people lose the meaning of their lives, their social organization disintegrates, and they themselves morally decay.
We are now in the same condition. But we have never really understood what we have lost, for our spiritual leaders unfortunately were more interested in protecting their institutions than in understanding the mystery that symbols present."

man, there's a clip i've been searching for from jon forever, where he says something like "the bible is the best and first book to understand reality, and I've tried looking for other books but the bible does it best" and "in all of history, the bible has the greatest explanations." I'm certainly butchering what he actually said, but considering that I cannot find the clip despite listening to all of most of his talks again, this video and my memory is the closest i'll get.

I'd say that the Tao Te Ching is pretty on the mark. There's a clarity, cleanliness and kind of purity to it, but that could also been seen as sterility. The Bible maps out the whole picture in a kind of messy way at first glance but that all ties together at a different resolution.

Also, the orthodox christians favourite book, Revelations, is my many heavy non polarised experts just a work of an more or less insane person, not the apostle John, and wasn't really supposed to be in the canon at all.

Their videos are pretty good but I’ve been a little put off by some videos where they put a little too much emphasis on social justice and related stuff, like they do a little summary and they mention or put emphasis on a progressive talking point. It hard not to hear it. Even some of the drawings in some of the videos the emphasis on the ethnicity of the people seem a little forced.
