Survive to Ensure Your Targets Won’t
Rangers are martial survivalists, tough but with adaptable features and a touch of spellcasting for withstanding what the wilderness can throw at you. Rogues are masters of stealth and subterfuge, only plunging in the knife at opportune moments before disappearing back into the darkness. Put them together and you get a ghost, a legend of the forest that is only proven real as it slices an unsuspecting throat. Put some camo gear on and get ready for a long stakeout as we go through everything you need to know.

Ranger/Rogue is one of my favorite Multiclassing combos. Favorite 2 Subclass combos are either the Gloomstalker Assassin as mentioned here or a Phantom Rogue up to a maximum level 9 and Drakewarden Ranger up to a Maximum Level of 11 while playing an Owlin, Tabaxi, or a Changeling.

Use the shadow marked elf race, take 5 levels of gloomstalker then 7 levels of Arcane Trickster and the rest in Gloom Stalker. Don't choose spells with attack rolls or DC's, enjoy the fact that your free spells from your expanded spell list has most of the spells you need. Find out that you only loose 2 half caster levels but get 4 cantrips and a fighting style in return. Take crossbow expert, sharpshooter and elven accuarcy. Choose Perception as your ranger expertise, choose crimimal as your background, end up with 6 skill proficincies (5 of which being expertises.) In this case taking 7 levels of rogue is justified for evasion and 4d6 of sneak attack. What you get is ranger that's better at rangering than a ranger and a Rogue thats better at rogue-ing than a Rogue. You also end up doing more damage than a Rogue or a gloomstalker. You do fall behind for a level at level 6 though.

I love rogue rangers! You get so many skill proficiencies. I’ve been running a swashbuckler and revised Beastmaster for over a year now. I took the magic initiate feat on a variant human for booming blade and find familiar. This mean I can usually get advantage from my owl familiar and get the free disengage to encourage the extra booming blade movement damage. Then your beast of the sky can bonus action attack. It’s a really fun build and you get to rp a bird obsessed pirate!

I've got a fun rogue ranger combo I don't think anyone has ever heard of, it's also arguably the most powerful. Beast Master Ranger 5 with the OG beast companion that has been made into a side kick, arcane trickster 15.
Tasha's added side kicks and no one ever talks about them. Any CR 1/2 that is friendly to ANY memeber of your party can become a side kick and the CR 1/4 beasts available to the BM ranger technically qualify. When you look into it more deeply this options is super powerful and your beast companion on it's own will be able to put out more damage some adventures on its own before adding the big damage the ranger rogue can do. Best part is the sidekick scales with the parties level rather than your ranger level so the beast will always get stronger and will be as reliable as a player character to stick around in any given combat.

I’ve been playing my Drow gloomstalker scout for a year.
Zephyr strike is a better concentration spell for me. I don’t even know hunters mark.
    Elven accuracy and sharpshooter
I started at rogue, five levels Ranger. Now I’ll be all rogue
Hit points are always good but with scout and sharpshooter etc I don’t get hit very often.

  • @TonySamedi
    @TonySamedi Před rokem +3

I'll mention one I've built recently but have yet to test at a table. Scout Beast Master (the primal companion version obviously).
    mostly ranger, 3 levels rogue.
Use a bow and archery fighting style (and sharpshooter as soon as you can get it, start with it if you get a feat) to attack from as far away as you can.
If the enemy does get into melee range, you've got skirmisher to move away asap.
The beast is great for reconnaissance, and once you hit 7th level in ranger you can use bonus action it to help, which gives you advantage to get those couple extra sneak attack points.
It also works thematically as a nature themed character. You're now the parties expert on nature and survival thanks to the subclass features, and still have all the other skills and expertise wherever you want them.

I had an idea for a character who's a thief with a Raven companion who aids said character in stealing things and acts as a scout. They're also a skilled archer. A Ranger/Rogue multiclass was a perfect fit for such a character, giving them a 2nd level archery fighting style and 3rd Level Beast Master in addition to all the skills that a rogue would naturally come with.

I'm playing a thief rogue and was looking for a multiclass to spice up the build a bit. Currently level 8 and gonna start going into ranger after level 9 and getting supreme sneak. A three point dip to get to Glooms Stalker really helps with the characters goal of being the best thief. The Darkvision is great and Dread Ambusher is useful for combat but it was really getting access to Disguise Self that sold me on it. The +2 to hit from the Archery fighting style will also be neat.

  • @Xynth25
    @Xynth25 Před rokem +2

Contrary to popular belief, PHB Ranger is the martial that can do the most damage. Its features suck, but those are bad features on top of a broken chassis. Pure Gloomstalker is the single strongest martial class in the game in terms of the damage output. Bad white room optimizers only focus on weapon attacks with Hunter's Mark. *Hunter's Mark is a trap.* It is bad at any level past 5. You have so many better spells. You get access to Summon Woodland Creatures, you've broken every encounter's action economy and put out shocking damage with 8 CR 1/4 creatures. There is no martial class that over the course of an adventuring day with more than 2 challenging encounters can outdamage a Gloomstalker playing well.
Assassin is a trap. It annihilates trivial encounters, but most DMs aren't going to let you pull that off against their most important encounters. If you go Gloomstalker, you do *everything possible* to be attacking from areas of full darkness or from within your Rope Trick bunker above the battlefield. You are invisible and will already get advantage. You will not be using a Longbow, there's no advantage to it except to finish trivial encounters. You will be using a hand crossbow with CBE and Sharpshooter.
If you want the flavor of a Rogue multiclass, I'm right there with you. It's awesome. But I wouldn't go more than 1 level of Rogue. Your bonus action is spoken for by CBE. It owns your bonus action. You don't need Cunning Action to Hide or Disengage if you're playing well unless your DM has you fight in flat, featureless spaces. If you want the Rogue flavor, maybe try the Criminal or Urban Bounty Hunter backgrounds. Gloomstalker works best with a Battlemaster Fighter multiclass for Precision Attack for those encounters you can't leverage your unique powers relating to darkness to get your advantage.

It's more of a rp decision to go Scout as I'm playing a Leonin. I have Zephyr Strike as one of my 1st level spells. Zip in, stab with a dagger, zip out, shoot with longbow for that extra d8. Cast Hunter's Mark next turn, and get the extra d6 on top of the d8 and sneak attack after employing Steady Aim. Should be fun and drive the DM crazy.

Ranger Rogue, i will be starting as this multi-class i nan op coming campaign. I took a different approach though. The fey subclass from ranger and multiple ways to gain expertise in these classes made this character an amazing candidate for social encounters. This fey subclass gives you a bonus to charisma checks equal to your wisdom mod. So i now have a +13 in my charisma checks which will get higher when i gain more levels

Gloom Assassin is really good for ambush assassination. I noticed that level 17 does not improve your sneak attack die and the capstone is meh. You can always take sharpshooter and one level in twilight domain cleric. Granting you a 300ft range to attack in total darkness. Your enemies are going to need more than luck and torches to find you.

id go Bugbear for Long-limbed, sneaky, and Surprise Attack. (When you make a melee attack on your turn, your reach for it is 5 feet greater than normal. You are proficient in the Stealth skill. and If you surprise a creature and hit it with an attack on your first turn in combat, the attack deals an extra 2d6 damage to it. You can use this trait only once per combat.). Ranger (Hunter/Colossus Slayer) for the "When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, the creature takes an extra 1d8 damage if it’s below its hit point maximum. You can deal this extra damage only once per turn." and Rogue (Phantom) for Wails from the Grave. not sure on how well it would work but sounds fun lol

I'm building an Arcane Trickster/Beastmaster, Forest Gnome. 15 Rogue, 5 Ranger at max level.
The whole build may fall flat, but so far does okay in combat. There's some strong ranged attacking going on between: archer, xbow expert, sharpshooter, fade away, and sneak attack.
I can also leverage either beasts or familiars for help in skill-checks and routinely can produce north of 20 in: Sleight of Hand, Stealth, Investigation, and Animal Handling.

I recently made a Goblin Ranger/Rogue multiclass that I'm loving so far. Ranger is Swarmkeeper and Rogue will be going Mastermind. With the new class features, it gives me tons of Bonus Action options (Help at range if I need to move, Steady Aim if I don't need to move), which I prefer over not having the options even if it means I can't do everything each turn. With the added damage/utility of Swarmkeeper to move things around or deal more damage when hit, the extra damage from Goblins doing damage to bigger creatures, the built in Hunter's Mark that saves me a spell slot for something else (admittedly for a worse Hunter's Mark, but another spell is nice to have for utility), it makes for something that I can currently roll with advantage on any turn I really want to, or give advantage to someone else. That means I likely hit every turn, with sneak damage, as well as the extra 5 damage I can just tack on 3 times a day. It's been deadly in my game, especially since we had a Bracers of Archery lying around too. Add in the utility of the skills, and it's been a ton of fun.

I built a gloomstalker rogue multiclass. Not too fancy of course. I’m still debating what I wanted to take for the third level of rogue and I’m early enough into the campaign that I’m waiting until 5th level for the two attacks for ranger before increasing rogue again. That’s the next class I’ll take upon level up, more ranger. I have debated the Trickster rogue because shield sounds amazing but my intelligence is only average so unless I get the right magic item (headband of intellect) I may not take that. Big maybe. Assassin sounds good but so does scout. Rogue is very compatible I find with ranger, especially gloomstalkers. My character is also drow so his range of darkvision is really maximized for his class and let’s him get the most out of his range with a bow.

So I am currently playing a Ranger/Rogue character and I am really befuddled that you omitted the two best races for both classes. For roleplaying options I think that the Changeling is the most versatile and fun, especially as a Rogue. For min/maxing and best game mechanics advantage, I went with the Bugbear for the win. The combo of Bugbear with Gloom stalker Ranger is an unbeatable combo as far as I am concerned. I muliticlassed from Ranger to Rogue at 5th level as the Ranger benefits after 4th level seemed to wane when compared to what the Rogue gets going forward. Anyway that's my 2 cents.

The Ambush Phantom Stalker, 5 ranger for extra attack, 2 fighter for action surge, the rest in Phantom Rogue. Get dex to 20, take custom lineage for elven accuracy and pick up sharp shooter after dex 20. First round of combat making 6 shots all with triple advantage and +10 to damage is mean.

You cannot take elven accuracy with custom lineage.

What if I am looking for optimized exploration (ability to cover terrain quickly), and optimized stealth (to either move outdoors, or sneak through dungeons undetected), but not necessarily looking for optimizing combat abilities?
I need as much exploration ability and sneakiness as possible.

Expertise in stealth, maybe throw in survival and acrobatics. Mobility feat. Those are two easy ones. Hope this helps!

I was originally thinking, class wise, some sort of Ranger/Rogue/Druid multiclass.
That way with wild shape, getting into otherwise inaccessible areas in a variety of terrains or even infiltration for the purpose of pure recon might be easier.
Could be for intelligence gathering on enemies, or even just exploring new areas.

There’s a problem.. dread ambusher is a melee ability. Use, improved init, charger and one handed fighting style… use a rapier or elven long blade, that is a long sword with the finess ability instead of two handed for flavor, be a drow for edge, use 3 lv ranger gloomstalker, 5 lv rogue assassin, and then go monk way of the shadow at least 6 lvs.. make sure you invest in a pair of dark lens spectacles, these intricate light mithril frames with obsidian glass lenses prevent light sensitivity and can only be removed by the wearer, designed for drow edge lords that gotta spread the swag to the surface.. keep caltrops and throwing knives for zoning with the darkness spell. Also a useful tip for rookies, use the disguise spell to disguise your probably black cloths to match the same as the shadows around you, go ahead and put a shinobi hood on that for added edge and reap the benefits of taking the guise of a shadow in shadows.. they better give you at least +10 to stealth in dim or dark areas if not invisible and the opposite in light. Keep sticky pads to pass to your dm to occasionally frighten your teammates and remember kids… keep those edges edgy!

Where does it state that the ranger gains bonus damage against favored enemies? I’ve seen people state it on the internet, Reddit, etc. I’ve never seen it printed in an actual rules publication

I am currently playing a ranger/rogue and dear lord is it good. The character is only level 5 and has a persuasion of 14! I am playing a Feywanderer ranger with currently only 1 level in rogue. I am probably going to go with scout rogue cause that fits the build I am going for.

3:29 Be warned, hunters mark is actually not very good. You will get a lot more value out of using many other concentration spells. Also, the favored foe feature is mostly just good for crossbow expert builds (or if something else is eating your bonus actions, like cunning actions for example) since it doesn't take any kind of action to activate. Basically you should use favored foe or a different concentration spell and never use hunter's mark

8:50 not exactly. You gain advantage on any creature that "hasn't taken a turn in combat yet," so you have to win initiative against it, or your attack must instigate combat before rolling initiative, because even if a creature is surprised, it still "takes a turn" doing nothing. SEPARATELY, if a creature is "surprised" (which pits the target's Perception check against your Stealth check) you gain the benefits of a crit _if_ you hit it.
    So:
    - Even if you surprise a creature, if that creature rolled better on initiative, it becomes no longer "surprised" before your first turn, so no auto-crit then
    - If you do attack a surprised creature before it gets a turn, you don't automatically score the hit. If your attack roll comes out below the target's AC (which yes is unlikely due to advantage), you still miss and don't get to roll any damage dice
