      Taking a more militaristic approach to the analysis, they are going to need to close the lava wall between L1 and L2 in the north and probably create an emergency trench in North Grindavik (using high explosives) to attempt to direct the lava flow away from the town and - more importantly - the pier where foreign aid will flow into the town. It might be too late, but we will see come daylight. The northern dirt road and southern paved road connected to the airport remain passable so they can be used to bring in firefighters and hoses.

    As I understand it, Grindavik was either the primary fishing port location for Iceland or one of the most important fishing hubs. And this is very tragic because of that. The power plant does more power for the island than people realize also; and has been misstated for how much power it produces.

      I tried to find out how many of the island's fishing jobs are based in Grindavik. They quote it as one of the most impotant fishing hubs for the island. But I couldn't find figures on how many jobs or how much of their fish totals come from there. But they do quite 7500 fishing jobs for iceland as a whole. If someone finds information on Grindavik specifically then they could figure out and compare that against the islands overall total fishing numbers. @@agnelomascarenhas8990

      At about :40 it was stated that the lava production is about 250 m³/sec and already over million m³ have erupted so far. This could go on for a while.

    I think the fact that the rupture has occurred exactly along / parallel to the intrusion (the ground upheaval) shows that entire length is no longer stable, and there is no way to say the town. They can spend a huge amount of money trying to do so but why? Only so the rift can maybe open right in the center of the town at some point in the future? Pure stupidity. The best thing to do is right the town off, right now, and assume it will never ever be safe again (so time to move). Painful yes but far better than risking lives over mere geopgraphy.

    I hope Iceland authorities put very strict limits on helicopter flyovers for tourists, and that they enforce proximity limits on drone operators. The recent eruptions have made people too casual about getting close.

  • @ProgPiglet

    The footage on the Live from Iceland stream was stunning at least. It was like a meteor hitting earth, then the earth cracking open with lil tendrils of effusive magma, just spraying everywhere indiscriminately. The colour of lava at night is just so mesmerizing

    I'd been watching since about hour 1.5 when the fissures had slowed their expansion. During the next couple hours there were green flames witnessed shooting from a couple spots. Speculation ran rampant in the stream chat I was watching so I'm posing the question here. Was this a copper vein interacting with magma?

    • @kneau

      The closest mention of anything like a copper vein in Iceland (that I know of) comes from a 2022 AGU publication, "Within Icelandic lava tubes we found blue-colored copper minerals, host to microbial life."
      It's possible those same minerals are involved. That said, I think Boron could also be a factor.

    Last report after Iceland's Coast Guard flew over it several times for a full measurement, the fisur was approximately 3 miles in total length with fountains shooting lava as high as 300 feet into the air. It has since dropped to just over 100 feet in height, but still approximately 3miles in total length.

    The size of the lava field already is absolutely ridiculous. Those helicopter videos are apocalyptic looking.
    What a thing to wake up to for me. The video of the eruptions initial few moments are insane. It looks like a nuclear bomb going off and then the camera zooms in to the massive fountain.

    Thank you for the update. Given it is a couple days to the winter solstice, where daylight is shortest and weather is not colder, would that play into the equation as well, in terms of any theoretical last minute preparations and/or anything else?

      not a geologist but I know that the Earth is an extremely good insulator so I can't see how the surface temperature outside would effect any magma more than a meter or two below the surface.

    Such a beautiful and terrifying fracture in the earth's surface with the heat and lava reminding me of a casting plant. I am glad the local population was evacuated.

    Do you know theres a big gap in the wall around the powerplant where the road is, they hadnt completed that bit, and lava going that way will probably destroy the powerplant.

    • @Mixter81
      @Mixter81 Před 8 měsíci

      They need to build a lava barrier there.

    • @LadyAlriandi
      @LadyAlriandi Před 8 měsíci +1

      The gap is most likely there so they can get people and stuff out while the barrier is slowing the lava down because there is no set time of when and where with lava and volcanoes. The hope is by the time the lava crests the barrier or reaches the road, everything important is out of the powerplant, because its not a if, but a when when it comes to this.
