  • Join us as we continue sailing across the North Atlantic Ocean from Europe to the tropical Caribbean in our Bluewater capable Hunter 42 Passage sailboat. We're short-handed with a crew of 2 people onboard on days 16 and 17 of our offshore voyage. We encounter big waves, big swell and encounter mid-ocean traffic requiring evasive maneuvering to avoid a boat crash out at sea.

    Remember that in 1895, there were only two cars in the entire state of Ohio. And, they managed to hit each other! Congratulations on avoiding being part 2 of that story!

    Passagemaking with a little excitement thrown in! I wonder why AIS is not lighting each other up and it seems no avoidance taken by the other vessel. Strange! You guys are getting good at that fishing! With Stephs wizardry in the galley, tthe eating is good! Sail on!

    you can save a lot of wear and power on your autopilot if you change the sea state to a higher setting...most sailboats will wander in waves but will keep the same course

    Have you guys ever tried grilling your mahi? There was a place in LA called seafood broiler the served mahi and it was grilled. It was so good with garlic sauce or something. They were really expensive in the 1980s so when I see you sailors catching all this mahi my mouth waters. I like tuna too but mahi is my top favorite and halibut (however it's spelled), it my second favorite but I don't see any sailing channels getting those. Maybe halibut is only in the pacific. Enjoy

    Ha ha. Last year we met another boat close enough the spreaders and mast tips lightly touched while passing. A slight adjustment on mainsheet to stand the boat a little more vertical and nothing snagged. We quickly traded a passenger and food before the boats finished passing.

    Dude, if you want more flavour from your wraps you can dry fry them for a bit each side in a hot pan till they slighty begin to brown, then build your lunch on that. It not only improves the doughy texture of the bread but it also adds a little maillard reaction, so you end up with toasty wraps that are slightly crispy.
    Enjoy your trip.. I'm totally jealous lol

    I can only assume if it because you two do not have enough experience to do it right, but no jack-lines and not securing those pelican clips on your lifeline gates while crossing an ocean is one of the dumbest thing I have seen people do on a sailboat.

    • @SailingJibsea
      @SailingJibsea  Před 6 měsíci +3

      We can only assume we don’t have the same comfort and risk level tolerances. Also when going downwind, the lifeline has to be open to accommodate the sheet if we want to avoid chafing.
