Here’s the thing. Chaka is a master of vocal phrasing. She created this whole vocal personality - that everyone borrows from ( and many don’t realize they’re imitating it).. In addition, her extensive range and musicality is second to NONE. She’s a total original! And we marvel at those background vocalists but forget they’re trying to reproduce CHAKAS backing vocals. Which speaks to Chaka’s brilliance. Go back and listen to those brilliant 70’s and 80’s Chaka records, especially “ We Can Work it Out” …listen to the way she harmonizes with herself. Listen to Be Bop Medley….Listen to A Night in Tunisia ( where she hits the note ABOVE the scale)…She’s a genius and a vocal beast. Especially in her prime. It’s why she is highly respected by everyone. Everyone From Aretha, Patti, Gladys and Whitney - down to the singers of the last 30 years ( too many to name). Chaka is and will forever be a North Star for singers. Thank you for doing this video! It’s so greatly appreciated.

Thanks for saying this my Sistah. Sounds like you were there from the beginning like me. Like you said she introduced a unique style of singing. Even the current artist today ex. SZA borrows from Chaka's personal cursive style of singing. But, she's the original and nobody sounds better than Chaka Chan.😅❤
You are right regarding the background singers. The singer Vesta said one time that she went to the school of Chaka Khan.
My only flaw with this appearance is that it didn’t go on for longer because I would’ve listened to 3 hours of this!
I appreciate that Chaka works with her voice instead of trying to force it into doing things it used to.
And she works with it masterfully!

The late Vesta Williams (RIP) 💖 was the only one who came close!
She used to sing background for Chaka back in the day and would even sing leads when Chaka was unable to. They would turn off Chaka’s mic and Vesta would perform behind the scenes.

Her former soprano background singer Toni Scruggs was under training with her singing Alto for 8 years and that takes lots of training.
Chaka so badass!! Great vocalist and artist. I love how all the artists are “mature” and so trained and skilled it comes off so natural!! It’s so raw yet perfect!!!!

This actually by far was better than the last 10yrs of live performances by her. Her voice was well rested..her control was immaculate and she definitely wasn't drinking ❤
She wasn't under the influence here. Not trying to be funny, but it's been public knowledge for years that she's been on and off dealing with drug abuse.
It really turned out much better than I expected as well . We all know Chaka was a vocal beast back in the day but like you mentioned over the last 10 or so years she has been inconsistent vocally but here she is focused , refreshed and sounding really good . She did this !

Ooh as soon as I started watching this the day it dropped, I was like oooooh I KNOW Jaron is gonna be ON this one! Also, happy belated birthday dear! The legends always make their songs seem so effortless to sing, idk if it's them being so used to it so they know how to play with it, or just the magic of them in their craft in general lol so happy to see/hear her like this. The background vocals was massive. I wished Toni Scruggs was up there singing soprano though Trina held it down. Tiffany Lorens range has increased over the years on ''sweet thing'' she is an alto all day. Audrey Wheeler Downing has always held down that Tenor section. Chaka has always had one of the best background vocals and the band REALLY played.

You can tell she still trains her vocals, because I could close my eyes and be transported. She sounds nearly exactly the way she did when I saw her in concert over 25 years ago. I honestly feel like her voice was the same, there was something slightly different about the timing and tempo. Maybe that’s needed for her to sound the same or nearly the same?
