Thailand cheaper, food better, woman better looking and Its a lot more fun. Yes pot is the big draw, especially among those that are retired. Since Thailand made pot legal it is now the go to place. The PI. is failing behind, why go to the Philipines when you can go to Thailand and have a much better time. Best Regards

    From a traveling/tourist perspective: pot is going to be a definite immediate positive for the travel experience (eg Amsterdam); quality matters and tourists would want high quality products; it needs to be a net social benefit - because genuine travelers/tourists want to see positive things happening in visited countries (eg artisan growers, cafes and other small business opportunities, income for locals, etc - if it caused social disruption, created economic cartels or criminal cartels, nobody respectable wants to see that happening

    My gf is from surigao del sur in Mindanao. The pre duterte years were horrible for many many communities. Drugs, shabu and violence were rampant. Fines and jail sentences weren't the only thing happening to dealers as well as customers. The police/military killed many. It is still very raw in the minds of these provincial men and women. That is one reason why Marcos won so handily. A strong law and order system is demanded by the people. We can walk around the area in safety now and the people love it. Davao is one of safest cities in the world now. Drugs coming back. I doubt it very much.

      @ronnienestor Před rokem

      True. For the record, I didn’t vote Duterte in the 2016 elections but he had a performance that left a hard spot in the hearts of Filipinos. Crime index can attest to it.
      Crime rates in capital region to provinces in 2020 were down by 50% to 70% vs. 2016 (start of drug war).
      For Filipinos especially those living in national capital region, we saw crime as daily news in 1990s to 2000s. Thugs and gang wars were common staples in the streets. Snatching, robberies, rape, shoplifting, carjacking, mugging, were still in our memories. Lo and behold, during the hard implementation of anti-crime, peace in communities started to be felt. The streets were cleared of thugs! Filipinos were using cellphones in public , in jeepneys without the fear of snatching. Carjacking (now a non-bailable offense) , robberies and rape were no longer the main staple in the news. Shoplifting and snatching have gone down as well. We live in peace.

If you want to travel around world freely without some sort of restrictions the next several years you likely will need. I find most of these guys who refuse are also of certain age too which is mind blowing considering their risk level. But as you know world travel has changed forever, new variants come and go, boosters get adjusted as do requirements. It is what it is.

I got Rona back in June of 2020 in the early and even to this day my taste hasn't been same. Something you need to be very careful of in USA land. Here's my take on this.
    Duterte got most of the population scared to death of possessing or using.
    I used before, but the hassle of it (here) now makes it not worth the trouble.
    If you want to stop a conversation with a local.... just say the M word. Most will pretend they didn't hear it.
    Driving (on it) here would be almost impossible......too stressful for me. If you drive here, you probably know what I mean.
    I wouldn't count on it becoming legal here ( in your retired lifetime ) despite Thailand. They're just so slooooow here. My neighbors plow their field with their water buffalo. I've yet to see a farm tractor.

Now the Fentanyl has taken over and the drug addicted everywhere slumping and nodding. NOT a big fan of legalization of pot, the Philippine economy can’t support a drug epidemic like the US has and what message are we sending to our children?
    Philippine tourism doesn’t need a bunch of drug addicts to bring in revenue, let Thailand have them! My Thoughts 😏
