I lost my cat some time ago and hearing this..i just hope she is walking freely on the rainbow bridge and spiritually protecting me from negative energy cause she was the light to my dark times
its very hard to forget someone you loved more than yourself...
Her smile lit up the room brighter than the moon and all the stars ever could. Her eyes were like sapphires, shining with the knowledge of the heavens, and the youth of a young girl. Her hair curled in light tendrils about her face. She reached out for him, then her smile faltered. “Kassian I’m sorry” she breathed before she vanished.
Kassian’s eyes snapped open to the reality, the daunting truth.
A million lanterns greeted his misty eyes. They gleamed like a thousand fireflies. They were a tribute to Serena. The memory of her smile sent yet another dagger of pain through his chest.
They had always come up here together to watch the lanterns rise into the sky. She always say “I’m not sad when I see the lanterns, it means that someone is in their way to a happier place, a place where there is no death.” And she gaze after them almost longingly. Now these were for her, and she was in her way to a happier place.
Kassian stood, his toes hanging off the edge. A bright feeling filled him, the excitement of being able to see her again.
And then he was falling, the cold air rushing past him and tugging at his hair and clothes. The millions of lights also passed him in an orange blur, and he closed his eyes. “Serena I’m coming” he
whispered “You never said goodbye to me and for that I am thankful, because goodbye means going away, and going away means forgetting. I know that wherever you are, you haven’t forgotten me.”

He dipped his fingers in the cold waters. The reflection became unstable, blurry...
"That's how it should be"
He said to the man in the pond. "You don't deserve to be seen" he stirred the hand. The waves got stronger. The flickering drops glimmered in the night.
"Yet, I can not shake this feeling" the fingers came out. "Why does it ache here?" he rubbed them on the chest as the disturbance on the surface dwindled.
"Isn't there at least one who never forgets me?"
A man stared back at me from below. His face and pain showing in others eyes.
"It's a painful truth, knowing that I won't be here physically with you forever. But in your heart and mind, I will live until you join me across the sea.
We will be okay somehow. You are strong, I am strong. I will be okay, as long as you don't forget me."

Arkio often wondered what the boy had thought in that moment, standing between one of humanity's greatest warriors, and the monster that had bested him. He knew one thing, whatever had gone through the boys mind, it had not been fear. The warrior rose, and looked out over the walls, breached in several places, and now painted with the blood of his brothers. He had lived a life of duty, and of loyalty, but he had always held on to the one greatest regret of his life. After the battle, he had never learned the boy's name. Only now, did he realise it didn't matter, it never had. The people of his village had claimed he was a nobody. Arkio dissagreed. The boy may not have had a name in his mind, but he was without a doubt, human. Brave, foolish and stubborn to the end.
His hand closed around his axe, one final time, as he rose to his feet. He found himself smiling, through the pain of dozens of wounds and through the loss of hundreds of his brothers. He would honour that boys death, right here, right now, with a thousand souls still fleeing behind him. As the hordes spilled over the walls, he hurled himself at them, feeling no fear, no anger. Arkio died there, with a song on his lips, and, for the first time in a life of war, peace in his heart.

My toxic trait is that I love self-sacrificing idiots of protagonists.
