  • John from www.growingyour... shares why every gardener needs to grow purple vegetables for their health, the soil & pollinators.
In this episode, you will discover why John planted more purple-colored vegetables in his garden this cool season than any other year.
You will learn some of the science-proven health benefits of purple pigmented vegetables due to their anthocyanin content. Vegetables can be a rich source of easily digestible purple pigments in plant foods.
John will share some of the science that he has learned about how purple foods can protect you from free radicals, reduce inflammation, help with cancer prevention, improves memory, improves blood sugar, and even help you to lose weight.
You will discover how many different kinds of anthocyanin pigments exist in the world, and why John is so into purple-colored vegetables.
You will also learn why Anthocyanin pigments are said to be more complex than other pigments found in plants such as beta-carotene and others.
Next, you will learn about some anthocyanin-rich foods that John does not grow currently, but consumes to up his anthocyanin content in his diet as he feels it is important to have optimal health. You will learn how some of these foods that he eats can be used to grow foods in your garden and have even more purple-colored foods.
Next, John will take you around his garden and share with you 12 vegetables that he grows that contain anthocyanins that are super easy to grow and super nutrient-dense to eat that will fuel your body with the power of purple veggies.
Next, you will learn the specific soil amendments that have been shown to boost plant metabolites including phytonutrients, such as anthocyanin so you can even have higher levels of these pigments in your plants that growing with an N-P-K fertilizer out of a bag, that will not give the plant all the nutrients and microbiome elements required to create healthier, more disease-resistant plants that will in turn help get you healthier at the same time.
Finally, John will share the best way to keep the highest level of anthocyanins in foods that you can do free! You will also learn two of the best ways John uses to preserve the anthocyanins & extract other important plant phytonutrients out of his plants by using a slow juicer and vacuum blender. You will learn what John does not traditionally blend his purple foods like the majority of people on the plant and how by using different equipment, you can significantly increase the polyphenol content of your foods.
Finally, You will discover why John uses the Blendtec Nutrient Preserver blending his anthocyanin rich and why it is essential to retain the highest level of antioxidants and polyphenols. You will also learn about John's favorite Slow juicer that he extracts the plant phytochemicals and extracts them so he can include more vegetables in his diet.
After watching this episode, you will learn why every gardener needs to grow and eat purple vegetables, how to increase plant phytonutrients, and process the purple vegetables best when consuming to get the maximum health benefits.

John is passionate, intelligent , dedicated, healthy and family oriented as well as being an entrepreneur. He loves traveling and is fit and good looking, as well as being an EXCELLENT gardener, what more could a girl ask for.
I’m the odd one out in my house because I don’t want to cook meat, slather everything in oil or eat animal products 3 times a day.

Im not a vegan, I love me a good steak. I do however LOVE your videos. You do not get pushy or obnoxious about being vegan, you stick to the topic of growing, gardening and health benefits of the veggies you are discussing. BONUS: you are in my area, so your weather and climate struggles are mine. I really appreciate you.
QUESTION: Can you do an episode discussing edible flowers and when they can grow? For instance, for our region, calendula and borage grows all winter, do the pansies and violas? What else is edible?

Wow! What a selection of purple foods to eat! I have a few, I’m going to have to step it up I can see.
I’m cancelling my Amazon order of bone meal, blood meal and a few other things and am taking my soil in the direction that John teaches.
I DID invest in worms last year and still have worms this year - they survived! I released a lot into my yard, worms multiply quick. I will be planting in the soil this year - I’m PRAYING! Last summer was high temps over 110 almost all summer long in Northern California last summer. Between that and the fires I was happy to survive with my life and half of a garden. It was just too hot for some things to flower up. Tomatoes - yikes!

Out of resistance to cooking during a tough time in life I changed my eating habits to what you ccx suggest... I ate only raw(mostly) fruits and veggies, tuna, meats with cheese with crackers (one of the few processed foods I ate). I ate ccx what I call solid dairy, but actually drank minimal milk. I ate 3-4 full home cooked meals a week when my mom cooked other wise I ate from the above list. I would make blueberry smoothies, with frozen blue berrys and milk... snacking on blueberrys is one of my favorite snacks... I lost 100lbs... 1 pound week average for 2 years when my body hit what was my bbn idea body weight for my body... I stopped loosing weight. My body regulated its self and when it was was right it stabilized with no ad jug adjustments in my intake. In fact I. Was eating WAY more food... just constant all day snacking on nuts and fruits. I ate sweets... my one requirement, had to be home made, no preservatives.....
My story supports everything you said about weight.... I'm going to revisit my diet choices and add in more purple. I still have a lot of health issues, but I've really been slacking on the quality of food I'm eating.... thank you

I got a recipe which changed my health life >> Put these in blender, Makes 2 servings >> 7 oak leaves ; 4 or 10 acorns ; small grab of pine needles ; 2 big orange leaves ; 1 large fig leaf ; 17 leaves of the heavenly tree . 1 oz of cashew ; 1 oz of quinoa ; 1 full glass of water for the blending to work.. All of those need to be raw and fresh picked. I also add random herbs & flowers sometimes, but the core recipe is the tree leaves. TBH I have an herb only recipe for that time of year tho... Whatever is in the tree leaves vary throughout the year & whether or not it's producing fruit. The acorns neutralize in the blender water.
Also, u gotta try Amaranth. Don't worry about the seeds. just grab the whole fluffy green bud & that one you cook with normal meals. the seeds come with the bud.
Eating typical leafy greens is cool an all, but it hardly feeds you & is a constant struggle to win against the bugs & deer. I have literally lived on these recipe's as my soul/only food source for extended times. 2 complete years once, but I have to go back to the city sometimes. (Just being honest) . i've been doing this for at least a decade, now I loathe going back to city food. Now, City food makes me Feel starved with a bellyful & it tastes like salty cardboard with added drugs.
Tread light with this recipe it is powerful and is typically able to feed me for 1.5 days. All while working in the wilderness where I probably hike at least 5 miles a day & pull tree's for fire clearing.

I like wood sorrel or aka purple shamrock. My 5 year old granddaughter likes them and she is a picky eater. I am trying purple Brussel sprouts this year. I also like purple tomatillos. They make a good salsa.

I'm growing American black nightshade berries. They are dark purple. I hear once ripen they can be very beneficial also can be poisonous if not ripen. John is the plant genius 🌱🌼🌻

John have you seen the sweet potatos that are white on the outside and blue to almost black on the inside? I used to get them at an oriental food shop. I made a purple sweet potato pie for snigs and grins one time. I'll bet they would blend up with some excelent antioxidants being released.

Do you have any videos on pigeon peas? Medicinal leaves, really high iron -- kind of seems like the type of thing that you might be interested in.
