  • It is coming up to 75 years since Pan Am signed a contract for 29 units of the new Boeing 377 Stratocruiser. The double-decker plane could fit up to 100 passengers inside one of the first pressurized cabins and was a truly innovative aircraft for its time.

    This is my number one favorite plane of all time. I know people say it's ugly bbut I find it truly beautiful. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or maybe I just like really weird planes like a Corvair atl-98. Those were cool.

      @@gestaposantaclaus Well I'm glad at least someone has good taste and a appreciation for those very iconic vintage planes. Never really thought about it ,but yes the Super Guppy does very closely resemble the 377. Guess that's why they are such beautiful planes.

    Notable that an airliner that only had 56 made had such a large impact on commercial aviation.
    The C-97 cargo carrier and its variants used the same airframe and engines, and Boeing did sell 887 of them, so overall the line was profitable.

    • @jimandmandy
      @jimandmandy Před 3 lety

      Profitable only because the US government paid for development and, as you noted, purchased the vast majority of them. It did not have much of an impact on commercial aviation, the Constellation and DC-4/6/7 were the ones that did, until the 707 came along.

    I was a young passenger on a PanAm flight. Perhaps Manila to Guam to Wake Island to Honolulu. Perhaps 1956. I remember seeing the home movie of fuel dumping before landing back at Wake Island. On the first attempt to get to Honolulu, one of the 3 engines failed just before the point of no return. This Wake Island to Wake Island flight took longer than the scheduled Wake Island to Honolulu flight because flying on 3 engines is slower. So we overnighted in the hotel. Those were the days that the crew stayed with the aircraft, and when there was a stopover, everyone stopped over. It was certainly luxurious.

    Interesting video. Thank you.
    Unfortunately, the plane was STAGGERINGLY dangerous (by modern standards).
    Within 10 years of entering service, almost 10% of the fleet had crashed. The main problem was with the engines/propellers. The latter especially had the annoying habit of wanting to fly off on their own during flight.
    BTW, that crash rate would be like about 60 787's crashing during their first 10 years in service.

    Too bad they don't fly things like this on international flights from the US to Europe (At least not anymore). Would have been nice to get a berth for my last trip from Chicago to Switzerland which was about 8 hours (over night). Obviously a round trip ticket for $600 was a steal (went during November which is the ideal time to travel as it's off season and not many tourists fly during that time) so I won't complain, as you can't even fly to SFO from Chicago for $600 many times.

    • @jimandmandy
      @jimandmandy Před 3 lety +1

      You would not want to fly this Chicago to Switzerland today. How about 16 hours with vibration, more noise and turbulence. Ive flown on prop airliners as a child. Modern jets are not only faster but bigger and more comfortable. If you are willing to pay more, most intercontinental business class seats are lie flat beds with a lot more privacy than sleeping berths back then.
