  • Tips For Growing Giant Coleus
In this video I show you how to grow huge and healthy Coleus. Coleus is one of the most versatile shade plants available at nearly every garden center across North America. They can be grown in containers and flower boxes or just directly in the ground. As long as light and soil conditions are within their acceptable range, you'll get some good growth. But how do you get giant Coleus? Well, my friend, watch and find out...
Ok fine, I'll tell you. It's a flower pinching method. A quick pinch above the highest foliage growth and off come the flowers. While beautiful, the flowers draw energy away from the plant and cause the Coleus to become leggy and elongated. Plucking flowers creates a more bushy and full Coleus.

My Coleus grew over 4 feet tall in a 24 inch across pot in full west facing sun& Kansas heat in July, August & September . Upper 90s and 100s heat.
I did bring the pant inside to over winter. I trimmed them, & started many new plants & gave away as many as I could. I had 4 different types, & colors. This year I have plenty to start new pot & additional pots at my daughter.
The pots in backyard face south, 6 + hours of sun,

That’s awesome! People think I’m crazy when I tell them Coleus will take full sun.

@@BarefootBonsai some cultivars don't like full sun, but you're right, most of them can be hardened off to tolerate it or even thrive in it. I've grown some monsters in full sun that fell over and rooted the side branches where they touched the soil. It was Alabama Sunsets and some sort of Wizard Mix, I think. The Alabama sunsets are my absolute favorite.

They have to have wizard varieties there. Do you have Proven Winners brand plants? I know they offer a lot of varieties.
