In our past historical animated documentary series, we have talked about the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, covering the battles of Guandu and Red Cliffs. In the aftermath, Jin dynasty managed to take over the country, but their policies would lead to the civil wars, collectively known as the War of the Eight Princes.

"her reputation as scheming, petty, and ruthless is probably propaganda."
*Spends the next 6 minutes describing in detail how she schemed, pettied, and ruthlessly consolidated power for herself.*
this is a propaganda video! do not watch! HAHA
condorX2 Liu Bei only cared about the people and this isn’t history alternative channel dumbass
Reputation? But to be fair this is true for all ruler. So she isn't alone.
@lolcano234 people like that just come with using the internet lol. Its pretty weird but its not strange to see people online spamming their political opinions regardless of belief nowadays
China being largely Confucian often did not like it when women were in positions of great power. If you look at any powerful woman in Chinese history, they are likely associated with those same negative traits. Keep in mind that most of this history is not written by the subjects themselves and by biased third parties.
Roman Empire: *Screams at Crisis of the Third Century*
China: First time?
China: "There, there. Want to know my story?"
@WithAStick AngryWhiteMan Well, with such a huge population, I think it's safe to say they cover the whole gamut of the loyalty spectrum
The first son of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, for example, famously remained loyal to the memory of his father as the Emperor, and committed suicide as instructed, in spite of his supporters urging him to rise up in rebellion, correctly deducing that his father was already dead and the order to commit suicide came from those who were impersonating his dead father's authority
@@condorX2 There's a theory that Liu Bei wasn't even remotely remorseful over Guan Yu's death
The theory is that Liu Bei had always had aspiration to become the emperor
However, Guan Yu was loyal to the Han dynasty - the only reason why he followed Liu Bei was because LB presented himself as a Han loyalist trying to revive the Han
However, by the time near Guan Yu's death it was apparent to him that LB was merely putting up an act, and LB's ambitions became apparent to Guan Yu, and a rift started developing between them
It sort of checks out
It's why Guan Yu never participated in the subjugation of Shu - because to him that was LB seizing land from Liu Zhang, who was the rightful lord of Shu, previously appointed by the Han court
It's also why Guan Yu embarked on his campaign with almost little to no support from the rest of Shu - Guan Yu was literally going at it alone
At that point, his mindset was, "Fine if LB doesn't care about saving the Han emperor, I'll just have to do it myself"
It's also why when GY requested for help, Meng Da and Liu Feng denied to help
Think about it
GY is supposedly the brother of the new lord of Shu LB, would any Shu subject dare to deny his request for help?
Especially Liu Feng, considering he is LB's adopted son
The theory is that, Liu Feng must have received instructions to leave GY be, and were later scapegoated for it
To LB, GY at that point has become an obstacle for him to be emperor, yet there is no way he can remove GY, so letting GY die a heroic death in battle is the perfect solution for him
And if GY's death gives him a pretext to invade Wu, that's like killing two birds with one stone, to him
The theory also goes on to say that LB's other close followers, like ZGL and Zhao Yun, were aware of these tensions, to some degree
It's why they vehemently opposed LB's Wu campaign, and chose to sit it out
I think you are also too much
this is just historical video and he was just talking about the history
I think you sound more like a propagandist than him or her
In fact they faced with a big trouble at nearly the same time XD
When Romulus was deposited in 476AD, China was also suffering a dark age.
When you have imbecile trait but your wife is 30+ intrigue monster
And all major vassals with opinions of over -50 ...
@@winjiro106 nonono, we were talking about the game of Murdering Your Wife.
But your husband's cousin (Sima Lun) have 31 intrigue + Schemer's trait
I must be chilling if I sense this fact in CK2.
Don't you know? In Asia, the only things more dangerous than men...are women. There are significantly less clashes between a wife's father and her husband. There are a crap ton of clashes between a husband's mother and his wife. So messy to a point, even a big country like China can get bogged down.
This period does feel a bit like the Roman empire's period of Germanic migration into Rome's borders due to Hunnic expansion.
I was thinking the same. Especially the sack of their capital is very similar to the sack of Rome in 410 and 455 by Germanic tribes and in some extent to the state of Roman empire where the West died due to nomadic incursions while the East remained for another thousand years.
They were roughly contemporary, which has led some historians to speculate that a climate shift caused both
You are definitely right.
i remember reading somewhere that huns and the dudes that invaded china in this period are related and basically from the same origin, but cant remember where do i read that xD
@Arexon The real cause of the downfall for the Roman Empire was Currency devaluation. The Roman Military was too expensive to maintain in "peacetime" or when there wasn't any large campaigns to conduct. Tax collection was not enough to fund the army and the only sure way to payoff soldiers was by plundering other civilisations. The Administration was also inflated and the civil servants and administrators all needed to be paid well. What the government did was simply devalue the gold coins with silver to have more coins available and this caused damage to the economy. Economics, expensive military and the greed of the ruling class is what really destroyed the Empire. The foreign Barbarians only managed to destroy an already weakened Empire.
Dude, there's so much double dealing and back stabbing I have to watch three times to remember who's betraying who at what time. I love it!!!
😁 thanks for watching!
and so far only 3 out of the 8 princes are involved
Ikr. Plus the one/two syllable names makes it that much harder.
Chinese Game of Thrones
This is Chinese politics, it is still the same now.
Cao Cao knew that Sima Yi would be a threat in the future and would one day usurp the Cao dynasty. There is a story that after one particular meeting with Cao Cao and while Sima Yi was about to leave, Cao Cao shouted Sima Yi's name behind his back and Sima Yi made the gesture of turning only his head at Cao and not his body. This was known as 'the wolf's gaze' and Cao Cao knew that only a man with great ambition and cunning could make such a gesture. Another story is that Cao Cao once had a dream of three horses (The 'ma' in the name Sima means horse) eating straws in a manger (The word 'cao' means manger). In retrospect, in indicates that Sima Yi and his two sons (the three horses) would one day consume the Cao family (manger). From then on, Cao Cao became very wary of Sima Yi's power and influence and warned his son that Sima Yi was not content in being under his authority and would certainly interfere in his affairs. Nevertheless, Cao needed Sima Yi to aid his son in fighting against Zhuge Liang and therefore could not afford to get rid of him. Hence Cao Cao was partly responsible for his own dynasty's downfall.
I favored Kingdom of Wei in Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Dynasty Warriors games. Even I disliked Sima Yi from the start and favored Guo Jia over him. Who's to say that Sima Yi poisoned Guo Jia to prevent him from interfering in his plans to overtake the Wei Dynasty? Guo Jia died of a mysterious illness at the age of 38 just before the Battle of Chi Bi. Guo Jia was so good and intelligent that every prediction that man ever made came true. This is why Cao Cao trusted him so highly with everything. Guo Jia's death devastated Cao Cao deeply and inadvertently set the stage up for Sima Yi's rise in Cao Cao's court. Imagine what would have happened had Guo Jia survived? Could he have prevented Sima Yi's plot to overthrow Cao Cao's family? I suspect this highly. It does seem odd that Guo Jia died at such a young age when Cao Cao needed him most.
@@LagunaShirogane dont forget sun jian top general also missing since yellow turbans. Guo jia is most likely kill by sima clan because sima clan dream usurping the throne from han dynasty and use poison drinks to make him sick and die because he is a threat to sima yi ambition to overthrow cao cao.
@@breezywarhead8489 This makes the most sense. Guo Jia's son also had a bad reputation among the Wei Dynasty as well. What I read of Guo Yi, who was Guo Jia's son, was disturbing. Guo Yi was welcomed by Cao Cao into his family, after Guo Jia's death, like he was another one of his children. What was disturbing about Guo Yi is how he treated some officers in the Wei army when he was older in a horrible well such poor attitude problems. As well as reports that suggest he was gay due to how he acted oddly around some men. Im not sure if this was propaganda by the Sima Family to keep Guo Yi down or if this was true as its said that history is written by the victors regardless if its factual or truth. This is very true with Cao Cao as history has never been too kind to the Hero of Chaos. History and stories has often portrayed Cao Cao in poor light by making him out to be an evil tyrant not much better than Dong Zhuo...if not worse. When in reality, Cao Cao did what he had to for the sake of the country. Even if it meant being portrayed as a villian to his enemies and to do things that others wouldnt dare cross. He reminds me of Nobunaga Oda a bit in this sense. Doing what is necessary to achive the best course of action. Which is unifying the country by any means necessary. Liu Bei was seen as an adversary, for example, not an enemy. Sun Quan was no different to him. Unlike his son Cao Pi, Cao Cao refused to force the Emperor to abdicate the throne to him and stayed in his good graces and supported him and protected him.
@@LagunaShirogane although jin dynasty before the war of eight princes portray wei highly than shu and wu. Then ming dynasty portray wei badly. Kinda ironic
@@breezywarhead8489 Yeah it does. Perhaps the Ming were descendants of the Wei Dynasty's enemies? That would make the most sense if that be the case. It was said that China's own borders shrunk by nearly half its size after the War of the 8 Princes that followed a century later after the Three Kingdoms era which eventually would lead to the Mongol Invasion by Genghis Khan and his ancestors in the following centuries.

Imagine being on guard duty when the Wu Hu show up
Guard 1"Wu Hu!"
Guard 2 "What are you so happy about? We're being attacked by barbarians!"
Good one~
I just spit my drink.
Wu Hu is in a fact a collective term for the various barbarian tribes of the north, instead of a specific clan or people. It literally meant "Five (Northern) Barbarians", which implies the five major invaders of Jin borders: Xiongnu, Jie, Di, Xianbei, and the Qiang. There are in fact numerous other tribes which invaded Jin, but these five are the big boys in the fiasco.
@@spangopola Wu Hu can be literally translate to the five Hunnic people. You can see the disrespect the then Han China had for them--they can't even be bothered to distinguish them properly even as they carve out their own kingdoms in China and sacked their capitals.
@@pypy1986820 first, wu hu, and two of those were sino-tibetan people. do you really know what "Hunnic " means? second, these five were the major groups, other groups were just under these five. so what do you even mean by "can't even be bothered to distinguish them properly"? already told you that the big five were Xiongnu, Jie, Di, Xianbei & Qiang.
justFYI, Han chinese were from Qiang. Qiang and Di were related. Most Xianbei and some of Southern Xiongnu merged into Han later.
There is a drama called "Advisors' Alliance" which depicts the rise of Sima clan. Anyone who is interested in this part of history can watch it which is a really well made historical drama and completely different from other typical cheap chinese costume dramas made for women and children with self invented storylines, characters and weird people flying in sky like supermen.

I remember the ending of the Jin campaign in dynasty warriors 7 they briefly explained some of this and what happened after Sima Zhao defeated Shu. Great video!
I have to say, the Han Chinese should thank their lucky stars that the Sun family was around to build up the infrastructure of the Southlands when they ruled the kingdom of Wu. Because had they not then the surviving Jin wouldn't of had a strong powerbase in the south to retreat to when the Five Barbarians overran the northern territories and could have flooded past the Yangtze and really brought China into a dark age while reshaping its culture.
Don't forget Liu Bei (Shu Han)'s effort in developing the South West of China which was previously almost all under-developed near stone age mountain tribes with minimal governance and near non-existent infrastructure. The South West refuge strategy worked for China even in 20th century: as soon as Chiang and Chinese Nationalist forces retreated to the tropical mountains of South West China (Shu Han region), even the Imperial Japan can't dislodge them due to all the alleys to hide from aerial attacks and all the mountains that made mechanized advance all but impossible. In fact, I believe, without the near unassailable tropical mountains of South China (It's kinda like the Vale of Game of Thrones but with tropical climate which means plenty food so it's actually more impregnable), Chinese civilization would have been extinct like Rome instead of reincarnate again and again in real history...
Pretty accurate. Otherwise China might not be China as it is today

I honestly love these sponsored videos. I love starting a new total war game (Because I finally got a my first gaming pc and hadn’t played a total war game besides the first Rome and medieval 2.
