During a dive in Barkley Sound with Rendezvous Dive Adventures we found this 5 ft lingcod that caught an unsuspected chinook salmon. A bottom dweller catching a fast swimming fish.. the end?

To end all speculations about the name " Lingcod".... This fish, Ophidon Elongatus (long snouted), is actually related to and part of the greenling family. Lingcod is just a common name and as so often does not correctly represent itself
That ling was very aware of your presence and wasn't scared at all. I think they are just a truly amazing fish.
I just speared a lingcod yesterday on an Oregon Jetty dive, but he was nothing like the lingcod I've seen in the Puget Sound!
Thanks for this great video.
That's some incredible jaw strength
I live on the island and have fished my entire life so I just love seeing camera footage from underwater. My ten year son has taken a liking to fishing and he to loved this videa as lings are his favorite fish to poke after we catch them, I mean if we catch them. I have been thinkng of getting my dive licence and doing some videos in my local waters. I live in mill bay so 5 min drive and I couldmbe divingmtoo. Thank you for showing me what im missing out on
Finally the lingcod goes "meh, this is getting me nowhere" and spits out the lucky salmon.
Hahahaa
Just a slight correction on two comments:
1) It is not sucking the eggs out. This was filmed in July and no Lingod has nay egg masses at that time of year. It just did not get a good bite to eat it.
2) Lingcod are only territorial when eggs are present. Nov-April... Again I filmed this in July. Its just a lucky strike
For all those who still doubt. This is a lingcod (common name) Ophiodan elongatus (scientific name). The sommon name part cod is deceptive as it is actually a member of the greenling family. Not rockfis, not cod or anything else
amazing video, thanks for posting it!!
@laiyenma thanks for the suggestion but I had a Salmon researcher from Alaska as a dive buddy that day and he analyzed the footage..Talking about everything coming together :)
Beautiful footage!
STUNNING footage!!!
2:31
the salmons like "save me, please save me" lol
Very sweet video .... just priceless!!! I want both the springer ( Spring-King-Salmon ) and the Ling-cod...
i cant believe that it let you come that close! awesome video
3:33 "Now go home, and don't let me catch you causing trouble around here again!"
Thank you for your kind comment
Wow, what an amazing video. Every fisherman should see this (because it's awesome).
Yeah man, that is some extremely awesome and very rare footage man.
Frikkin coooll.
My first guess was sockeye...but your close up shows the black gum line...and then there's the spotted tail. Thanks for the interesting vid.
@EssentialSportsman Thank you... it is part of our Kelp and Critter DVD.. on the channel there is a preview trailer
That was great...I can't believe the ending!
Great footage
Ling Cod are one of the best eating of all the bottom fish. But not noted for their intelligence. We have caught lots of them "hitchiking." That is, we catch another rockfish and a Ling Cod will just simply grab onto it and hang on until the gaff. Great video!! Thanks for sharing.
thanks for the suggestion but I had a Salmon researcher from Alaska as a dive buddy that day and he analyzed the footage..Talking about everything coming together :)
Fish breath through gilles on their sides. They llook like slits that open and close
cool video... last summer i lost a big lingcod but not that big as this one though
Nice video, thumbs up from us and cheers from sunny IGY Simpson Bay Marina, Sint Maarten in the Caribbean.
That is a nice nook that linger had a hold of. O_O looked to be a real nice ling though also.
Thank you for sharing
Wow your Name!
No speargun on you...? I would've lined up a shot and tried to kill two birds with one stone! Awesome footage.
Papwithanhatchet do you eat fish or any meet products? If so do you know where it comes from? Spearfising is or of the most sustainable ways to harvest a meal from the ocean, check your head...
Cant spearfish salmon :( better aim for the lingcod first.
Wow. Very good vid.
I was reeling in a scrapfish in Katlian Bay, Sitka, AK when I was young; the water was black and up pops a Steller Sea Lion. Freakin head was as big as a steering wheel on the boat I was on. 'bout crapped my pants. Those things are huge.
wow pure awesomeness, now i can truely appreciate the creatures i catch :)
I did not expect that ending!!!!!
haha the salmons like what the hell!! why are you just watching!!
great video! thanks for sharing! =)
awesome vid that was two nice size fish
Amazing footage - definitely +1 subscriber - cheers
that salmon is like looking at the diver "give a brother a hand yo...."
I tihnk it's depressign watching canada and other cold landscape water diving videos xD I like when it's much more life and light blue hot water :D but still cool
That link cods jaw power must be insane. To hold a salmon like that takes insane power.
the salmon is just chilling there like nothing has ever happened
@cb7pwn Thank you very much for your compliment. Well... I guess it was luck and nothing else. We were diving on a small reef and we saw what we thought was a flasher of a fishing boat. We swam towards it and saw the silver flashing of the salmon in the fight.
I think this was more like "Lingcod spares salmons life" good vid though
awesome footage definately king salmon spots on back and black mouth very nice
His eyes were bigger than his mouth. Great vid.
@Rendezvousdiving how it the ling cod breathing what that fish in its mouth?
What was the visibility in the water that day? 5 meters?
that chinook didnt give up like true salmon never do!
props! peter
Whoa, awesome! It's like the ling just decided it was a bit too much to chew and left.
How big were the ling & King
hey it kinda looks like a golitha gupper but smaller. i was lucky enough to reel in a 300 pounder took me like two hours to get it in the boat.
The most incredible happening - death escape. I wait till the last seconds to see if salmon can escape or not... it does.....
3:32 i was waiting for that :).
OH NO!!!!! PETA IS GOING TO HAVE A FIT WITH THIS VIDEO!!! THEY'RE GOING TO PROTEST FOR THE COD TO TREAT THOSE SALMON BETTER!
We don't have to kill everything we see. Nice Video.
Where in the sound is this?
@ChowZeb No it is a type of rock fish
How deep was that inmersion???
you do know chum salmon do not have dots while chrome right? the size and the black is in the mouth on occasion. it is and i state a chinook.
Wow. Amazing once in a lifetime footage. Thank you
How it the ling cod breathing with a fish in its mouth?
Darth Vader underwater.
@Spoonypictures The bite is not so tight that no water runs through. So the fish can breath
It is a lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus) attacking a king salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha)
I cant believe someone would argue with a islander on weather that was a solmon or not, never mind the type but I wish people wouldn't, argue with the man that made this vid. Especially if you look in the dictionary under pacific salmon it would show that salmon with a blurry spot so people dont think our salmon have adult ling cod growing out of there bellies till they reach a certain age then detach to go on there own!
I remember catching him a month later
lol salmon always looks suprised :P
Ling Cod are hardcore predators!! And yes this is a Ling putting the smack down on a King(=
is that a grouper?
hi what are you recording whit?? are u unther the water?
what was the point of the big fish sucking on the salmon than at the end letting it go?
That thing is badass
Any chance the diver had an effect on the outcome?
@Rendezvousdiving he meant how is it that the fish is breathing with the fish not able to let the water rush through the mouth and out the gills..
Sorry Marino, but I had thisverified by serveral salmon scientist and it IS a chinook salmon.
Fish is like uhh can ya fukin help me man
took a kid fishing first time ever in PWS AK.... he caught a huge yellow-eye, as he brought it up, a huge Ling grabbed it & wouldnt let go........ I gaffed his ass & we got both in boat.
the salmon is like trying to say to the diver. brooooooo helpppp me broooooo.
Is cod a type of monster goby?
Ling cods look like giant mottled sculpin
haha the salmon had an expression like holy shit im gonna die throughout the vid
he is underwater and he is recording with a camera ...
I mean , we are 2012 , I have seen so many water proof CELLPHONES and a waterproof camera seems unreal?
The lingcod doesn't have the kind of mouth/teeth that would allow it to bite off chunks of the salmon, and it couldn't swallow it whole either. The cod would have let go eventually, with or without the diver's presence.
Man those Lings are aggressive!
How deep was that?
That's lingcod for you; having caught a few by rod & reel I have noticed they try to eat the most outlandish things...I mean other fishes they have no hope at all getting down their throats....
I wonder how hard it would be to take off your hand when it bites you 😂😂
the salmon lived to see the other day!
Ling cod are EXTREMELY territorial and will literally bite ANYTHING that comes near their territory near the ocean bottom. Hence what happened when Mr Salmon rolled into the hood.
who won?
XD Is the brown fish breathing through its nose?
Seems like salmon feeds the whole ocean and land
We dont have pollock, get your facts streight!
Look up British Columbia Canada Diving u would see it has some of the best dive sites on the planet
Aaaawesome!!!!
THAT LINGCOD HAVE SWAG SKIN
salmon was just too big to eat.
yes they do, I caught one 25 pounds last week
