The way she always got nervous before the performance and then once she gets onstage all her nerves go away. She just shakes off the nerves and does her thing and she killed it each time on the show. She was the only one the show that never was on the bottom 2. She my fave to this day for American idol.
You can tell she was still finding her voice. You can easily fall into the trap of wanting to emmulate Mariah because MC's voice is insurmountably inspiring. There's a bit of a stylistic battle going on in her head and it must have been ridiculously difficult to be filmed and scrutinized. She did great even tho some notes didn't feel right. She is way more confident in her style nowadays and that shines in her voice. This is almost like her riding her bike without the training wheels for the first time. She came to life at the end.
The difference is that Mariah obviously knew the Nilsson recording, knew she was performing this song in his shadows, learned from his recording, and then made it her own. You can hear in this version that Kelly has heard Mariah's version and based her performance on that-but she hasn't heard Nilsson's, which I think is almost a prerequisite to fully understanding what Mariah was doing with her arrangement.
Also, Kelly is a soprano and the verses have a lot of low notes that don't feel good for her to sing. When she lets loose as the chorus climbs higher her voice opens up to do what it was meant to do.
