Starfield PC Optimization Guide - Best Graphics Settings for 60 FPS!

- Apologies for the long hiatus guys, but Starfield has finally come upon us. Five years since Bethesda first revealed its trailer in 2018, this game has now arrived and is actually real - just in an early access state that is.
And those five years do sure show in the product. First off, the game is devoid of infamous bugs. Sure, they may be small NPC pathing and physics glitches, but the game works really flawlessly as far as my playtime is concerned. The game's art and especially its lighting is also surprisingly beautiful - save for some poor spots. The combat is hands down Bethesda's best yet, and the soundtrack is just sublime to listen to wherever you are in the game.
However, its optimization is quite questionable. The game is extremely demanding both on your GPU and CPU. It's may be BGS' best-looking game to date, but I don't think the visuals justify this level of performance.
But there are some good news! Additional performance can very much be gained from a proper understanding of how the graphics settings work. So let's take a look at them.
Timeline
0:00 - Intro
0:48 - My Hardware Specs and Optimization Target (Correction: It's a 3080TI, not 3070)
1:19 - Common GPU-bound Settings
4:25 - Subtle GPU-bound Settings (very important)
6:35 - DLSS vs FSR
7:52 - About the CPU-bottleneck
8:54 - TL;DR
9:17 - Optimized Settings vs Ultra Preset
IMPORTANT! Ensure to enable Re-Bar (NVIDIA) or SAM (AMD) on both your Bios and GPU for a substantial performance gain.
For AMD:
- Open Radeon Software, select your "Starfield" game profile and enable 'Smart Access Memory'
For NVIDIA:
- Download latest NVIDIA Profile Inspector (nvidiaProfileInspector.zip): github.com/Orbmu2k/nvidiaProf...
- Run nvidiaProfileInspector.exe
- Select 'Starfield' in "Profiles" on upper left
- Scroll down to Section 5 - Common
- Make sure "rBAR" is Enabled
How to Install DLSS mod
Step 1: Download DLSS mod zip file here: drive.google.com/file/d/1nAEi...
Step 2: Copy entire zip file inside Starfield folder where game's .exe file exists
Step 3: Right click zip file and select "Extract Here".
Step 4: Run Game and Press F1 to bring up DLSS plugin menu. I recommend Preset D for image quality. DLSS will replace FSR so make sure FSR is selected in graphics options.
Note: I am using DLSS 2.5.1 instead of 3.5 because I find DLSS 2 much cleaner than 3.
If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments!
My Hardware Setup:
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x (Negative Curve 20)
GPU: Zotac 3080 Ti Trinity OC 12GB
RAM: Crucial Ballistix RGB 32GB 3600mhz
Drive: ADATA SX8200 NVME - Hry
That is a damn good video, maxed my FPS without any felt optical input. Let alone the lighthing-setting and render scale interaction is pure gold. You deserve my first ever YT comment!
Absolutely perfect video. Exactly what I was looking for. And the fact you went the extra effort to package the DLSS mod into a zip for us is super helpful. 10/10 video
A pleasure to help my brother.
Top notch content. It seems hard to find these types of videos anymore.
Thank you my man.
Such well made video. This was a huge improvement!
Perfect video, thanks a lot man, the settings were super annoying to mess with. This is probably the most straight forward graphics setting video I’ve ever watched. Great job!
Dude well put together with time stamps and all too. Keep it up and keep adding new ideas and your channel could blow up in the PC space. Cheers!
Thanks for this. Was waiting for the Digital Foundry video for optimised settings but you did a great job nailing them down.
That's a big shoe to fill. Thank you for the appreciation. Glad I could be of help my man.
bethesda really should make some performance improvements. It can't be that I have 60% GPU utilization in every bigger city but 100% in every other place. Have an RTX 4070 and a Ryzen 7 3700X.
Isn't that just because you are CPU limited in cities?
Game is cpu heavy
Cpu bottleneck.
Engine bottleneck…
My gpu is running at 98% almost everywhere it is a 1080ti though.😂
Wow, what a great video. Thanks!
Best guide ever! I have a 2080ti and I get 40+ fps with this.. With 60+ fps while indoors unfortunately I did not expect this game to run so poorly. Downloading DLSS and turning the rendering to 50% really helped without it it was a blurry ghosting mess
Hello mate!
Great video...thank you very much for the help!
Have a good one. 😃
Glad it helped!
really helped brother, enjoy
thanks dude i'm getting ready for launch
Thank you for packaging a DLSS file for us. Really helpful man / above and beyond what anyone else would do
A pleasure my brother
Excellent work mate.
Thank you brother!
Even though i am running a very high end machine....i am always looking for ways to maintain visual fidelity and relieve some stress on hardware.....this is an awesome guide! Thank you!
Very useful, thank you 👍
Running same options on my gtx 1080 and i7-6700k and it’s running smooth thank u!
How many frames?
These things do help, but I can't wait for the official mod tools to be released. This game like most Bethesda games won't be well optimized and look great until people are able to create unofficial patches, lighting mods, performance mods and general visual mods.
Thank you very much, I got great results on my RTX 2070S. Not as good as yours in terms of frames per second, but still nice an smooth (44-50 FPS), and very playable, so I'm happy! I do wish developers would add better descriptions in the graphics options, so many acronyms... Anyway, thanks again!
A pleasure to help my brother!
really great video, cheers bro
Thanks a lot my man
Been looking around for settings that would still maintain decent fidelity and once I put your settings in it's better than ever cant thank you enough.
A pleasure my friend. What GPU are you using? You could take advantage of DLSS at 50 percent resolution if you're not sensitive with clarity.
Using a 3060ti, thanks for asking. However I'm fine with a stable 60 in most area's performance for me is around the same as what you were getting.@@MrSiloterio
@@MagpieJD awesome! That's good to know!
Great guide well done, hopefully Bethesda releases performance patches too
Lovely work man. In Atlantis I I jumped 20FPS to maintain a full 60FPS
Awesome! I bet that hugely came from turning down shadows and volumetric lighting.
Thanks for making Starfield more smooth and fun to play. 👍
My pleasure brother!
Just as an FYI I made a performance mod that doesn't decrease visual fidelity called "Optimal Performance" I recommend pairing it with these settings, it's free FPS.
Awesome thanks man. What's the link?
@@MrSiloterio I'd love to send one but unfortunately YT deletes all my comments if they include a link in it. So I hope you're able to locate it yourself man, sorry!

Great vid👍
Thx for sharing, your guide helpme so much...
Glad to hear that brother!
Buen video , muy completo 👍
Made it playable and look decent on my 5600 xt. Thank you so much
For the particle quality at Low, there is actually a visual artifact around people when they're in front of smokes or waterfall. You can see that very clearly in the waterfall in the Well and the smoke at your ship when it takes off.
Nvm every particle setting has that weird artifact. But higher setting has less artifact.
Significant Improvement. Thank much for DLSS mod. I can't understand its 2023 and PC still can't run a game stock. Screw developers who can't optimize their games.
Extremely useful. With my 13700K @5.4 Ghz - 4070ti rig, it made a huge difference. Specially with DLSS. I am sorry but FSR is way too bad.
For people playing the game with HDD. Do not play it with HDD. Many bugs, sound issues, lip-sync problems will occur because of it. DDR5 will make some difference with the CPU bottleneck too specially with 13th Gen intel cpu's.
Nice content !
I have the game on an external ssd drive and had to switch it to performance mode in device manager it made the game smooth as butter 👌
This is the best setting video ive found. Also would like nvidia control center settings.
very helpful video. (The most important information however is that performance is just plain bad in open spaces on UC. Really no hope of optimizing that if your CPU is bottlenecked
Sad but that is true. The only way out of it is either upgrade your CPU or wait for patches to fix it.
I was struggling to find good settings for best fps on my own. This helped out alot tho!!! Although something I found at least in New Atlantis the framerate will drop to around 50ish but itll go to 80 in other places
Good shit!
tysm for this
Cheers! I have an old RTX2070 (not the TI nor super one) - still in the cities I have 30+ FPS :) and the game also looks good - thank you :)
Can't wait to get home and try this. My only complaint is how the game runs with my 6700 XT and i9900K.
Thanks a lot
Perfect guide, game is actually playable now lol
Good recommendations. I watched another video that had very similar conclusions. I'm on an RTX 3060Ti, and switching between Low and Ultra presets, I saw very little performance difference. The biggest factor was reder resolution. I hope they add in DLSS natively, because FSR2 is simply not as good.
You can get the mod it works really good
I have 3060ti as well and noticed no real change between ultra and low. The game runs alright but only in certain locations
@@nathanthompson742 I have since installed the DLSS mod, and it does indeed work great.
Still baffles me i can run Red Dead Redemption 2 at 100fps no problem but i have so many problems with this
I know 😂 but the good thing for me is that while the raw fps figures may be lesser than expected, the game surprisingly doesn't exhibit those infamous stutters or hitches which plague modern PC titles nowadays.
The game is still enjoyable to play despite those low framerates, which, is really surprising to me.
Same bro i got fuckin rx 6800 but i cant play well
@@MrSiloterioSame here lol. I’m getting 30-50 fps but it doesn’t stutter to the point of it being completely unplayable
When RedDead2 came out on PC it ran like trash and crashed all the time. That’s what happens when new games come out
I got a gaming laptop with a 4070 and the screen just continously tears with artefacts popping in and out and texture pop ins as well as a weird glitch where all darker textures just suddenly go pitch black and I can't see a thing until I restart the game...
Anyone able to suggest what to do here!? Feel like I've tried everything. Even set graphics to low, reduced resolution, disabled and enabled v-sync via the Nvidia control panel, messed about with other settings in the control panel... Nothing helps or stops the constant graphics glitching. It's like triangles popping up all over the screen at random... No idea how to fix it 😢
NOTE: I made a crucial typo error in my specs. I am actually using a 3080ti, NOT a 3070. Apologies for the error.

I follow your instructions exactly but now the game won't launch?
@@TheWinterFrozen hmm. what copy of the game do you have?
@@chrisiwooder sorry for the late reply. It's in the Nexus mod site. It uses three separate mods called StarfieldUpscaler, UpscalerBasePlugin, and the DLSS dll file. I just packaged it using one zip file so it won't be a hassle for others.
You're the best bro 🗿
Thank you my man!
I honestly downloaded the DLSS 3.5 and it runs so much better my card is quiet not like a jet engine.
Great help, i run a gtx 1660 super and after your video at 1080p I'm getting 50fps with great visuals. The contact shadows do bits
You can use 50 percent render resolution with the DLSS mod to maximize performance.
@@MrSiloterio I would bro but I dont think DLSS works on gtx cards right? Thought it was rtx exclusive
@martinkrzyzanowski9376 oh that's right I totally forgot about that! But you can still use FSR right?
@@MrSiloterio thats right I can, but honestly I noticed playing around with the settings that CAS is a better option, way more fps and in this game the visual quality isn't that different between the two. Hope they add FSR 3 tho
Lol I walked into new Atlantis and I immediately knew something was up which is why I made my way to this video
Top tip never run it off a hard drive. I learned this the hard way.😊 its by far the best performance gain you can get.
thank youu
Hey Mathew, thanks for informative video definitely will be trying you optimizations out, Can you guide us on the modding of the game. Is the modding the same way the old Bethesda games using modding app like vortex etc ?
I have not tried extensive modding of this game as the vanilla version is already really good. But once I test out mods that use script extenders, or other mods that improve quality of life further, I'll be sharing how to install them as well.
is there way you can guide us a little bil on how to apply the dlss mod you posted here ?

I would have never thought I had to look up "optimised graphics settings" while having a 4090. Absolute ridiculously bad performance in this game. But thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for. Since playing on a 4K@144Hz monitor, I can't stand everything below 90ish FPS.
I understand the struggle with high refresh rates as well! Is your performance greater than 90 FPS now?
@@MrSiloterio Yes. Still not great tho. DLSS and Frame Generation are a MUST in this game. But since we only get crappy FSR and a weird resolution scale slider... AMD just isn't doing it. They suck at software
God damn, I'm a pleb
I use the nivid thing right and pick the quality cuz there is a bar where on left is performance and quality I put it all the way to the right which is performance and it looked great but game crash after 20 mins of using it 😢
I just wanna know how to make the space / skyboxes look better
hi man
i have a i5 13500 with a 4090 and i couldnt get fps beyond 50 in the cities....any recommendations?
Is the music you're using in this video by chance from Punch Club 2? Just don't talk about Punch Club
I actually don't have any idea with the song titles. I just searched for royalty free music and selected my favorite tracks. 😂
Used these settings and can now play at 85% resolution 56-60fps in the big city. Gpu is overclocked tho.
DLSS mod doesn't work with your directions, i wonder if it needs like scrip extender or something also?
nevermind it did work but it created extra folder named "Starfield Upscaler" or something and there i needed to take the mods folder and was it dll file to the root folder of the game
I did exactly like you and it gave between 43 and 50 fps, my PC is 12700k 32gb ram and 2070 Super, in upscaling I went to CAS, it was in FSR2 and it didn't exceed 40 fps.
So if i follow this tutorial You guarantee my fps will be lowered to 60? everyone in here with 12,1300 intels and not getting 60. what have you done to your pcs?
why in the deep analysis u talk about "50% rendering scale" and in the last part when u show the "final" optimized settings u have 75%? which is the real optimized setting for rendering scale?? :) btw nice work!!
I am personally using 75 percent because that has the best image quality. However, you can choose to use 50 percent with DLSS if you really want more performance.
😍😍
can u do one for mfs2020 ?? thanks...really good job on this one.
I thought I was going crazy thinking my GPU was dying as it maxes out at 30% while running the game, but I'm only getting 40fps. That CPU bottleneck needs to be addressed ASAP
Agree. It's really jarring in populated areas.
hi i have the 4060 and i have no option for 60fpss... and i have ryzen 5 5600x do you know why
@@Humbleguy1400
how do you install dlss mod if you have game on game pass ? thx
It's still the same my brother. Just follow the instructions I provided.
Exactly the same way. Just go to the game's install folder (wherever starfield.exe is) and past the contents of this zip file. It's in a folder called Contents.
Tbh it dosnt make sense the game dosnt look that good so why am I only geting 40 fps with a 3080 I dunno did bathesda make a deal with nvidia so that we upgrade our cards I wouldn’t be surprised at all
I'm sorry do we have to copy the dll files included in the "UpscalerBasePlugin" folder to the Steam folder with the game's .exe? What to do with the StarfieldUpscaler.ini file? Is this mod the same of nexus site? Thank you!
You have to find the folder for starfield and paste all the needed files in there. The dlss file needs to be copied into the mod file then the upscalerbaseplugin.
Just follow the instructions in my pinned comment
@@MrSiloterio Allright thank you guys I got it.

5800x3D + 6950xt 80% scaling 4k ultra @ 60fps (mostly)
And wouldn’t adding dlss turn off achievements since it’s a modification ?
No it should not since it is not modifying the game's files.
Idk I get over 120 fps in buildings and 80-90 in the most demanding areas at native 1440 no fsr.
On steam or from the Xbox app? I have a 3080 with 5800X3D and barely get 70 fps with everything on medium to low
Guys, any idea why my graphics keep popping and the game looks so dark any idea?
Can you show it in a video? I would like to see what your issue is.
I had the same issue. My flashlight also was not working. I found on Reddit you have to delete the shader file and restart the game. It will reload shaders and BOOM 🤯 all lighting was perfect. The file is in app data, starfield and it should be the only file there.
Everything was dark for the first level unfortunately for me.

Should I still use DLSS over FSR if I have an AMD GPU?
No. DLSS is not usable for AMD GPUs. FSR will still be able to do a good job.

That was 3 years ago buddy
@@Minecrafanatic123 it was and still is one of the hardest games to run, and it was the most unoptimized game on release for the past 3 years. It's a fair comparison.
@HelplessTeno I don't think its a fair comparison on a card that's 3 generations behind and was already on the lower end of the generation. Even the minimum specs call for a 1070 ti they told you it wouldn't run well.
This game looks and runs like sht, a game that looks like it came out on PS4 Launch but runs like it's a Tech demo for the next generation of GPU's. If you aren't equipped with a current high end GPU you're gunna be stuck at 30fps. Bethesda had just one job and 7 years and they fked it up, unreal. But I can tell you put a lot of work into this video and are genuinely trying to help, good luck to you and your future videos.

Use FSR 2 if you have a AMD card.... And if you see this a few weeks later, you can use FSR 3 on any card which will make this video irrelevant
If the game will stay CPU-bottlenecked, no upscaling method will fix it. And even if FSR 3 arrives, I can just provide an updated pinned comment.
Fsr literally doesn't do anything in starfield. There's no performance increase and found it to perform worse
@noahm5217 that's probably because you adjusted the render resolution all the way up to 100. Upscaling only works its benefits when slider is at 75 percent as it is equivalent to ultra Upscaling quality and 50 percent is performance.
If you can notice, whenever you switch to the ultra preset, the resolution slider adjusts automatically to 75 percent.
@@MrSiloterio 75% is exactly how I have it configured with v-sync on and it doesn't stutter or tare at all in new atlantis which is why I'm very much optimistic about what FSR3 can provide in the coming weeks
