1999 - Le Mans - Ukyo Katayama's puncture

- The Japanese crew (Ukyo Katayama, Keiichi Tsuchiya and Toshino Suzuki) Toyota GT One is stuck behind Thomas Bscher in his own BMW V12 LM98 and is having trouble getting past. It is involved in its own battle (and probably isn't keen to let the Toyota through)
At exactly 3.06pm, Katayama's left rear tyre has blown on the way into Indianapolis. It is now coming in very slowly, but it is probably too soon to try and run through from this stop. There doesn't appear to be much damage though so they might be able to get it through. They are in the pits and the 52 Viper is coming in. It will park just in front of them and the BMW has just gone through to force the Toyota to lose a lap.
Meanwhile the Toyota crew have got the bodywork off and are now tiewrapping it back. Having just seen a rerun of the tyre blowout, how Katayama held it out of the Armco is anyone's guess. And the BMW is about to come round again, while they try to reattach the bodywork. Right rear pin won't secure properly but he goes back out to try and catch up. This may turn out to be the decisive moment of the race. The bid for glory was finished by a four-minute delay. - Sport
The TS020 is not a race car, it's a work of art!
Zoran Tot-Arvai it used to rape face in Gran Turismo 3
@@scottl.1568 Very true and one of the most powerful cars in the game :).
Agree
Agreed
Correct it failed, definitely not a race car.
The gt one was an absolutely beautiful machine!
Loved it ever since Gran Turismo 2 and 3.
Ukyo Katayama is seriously underrated. Back when he was in Formula One, he was consistently finishing in the points in sub-standard cars. Some say that he was offered an F1 drive with a big team (some even speculated Ferrari) but refused.
Matt 'Khandricar' Claypole Agreed. I don't think any of us have a clue about exactly how difficult it is to get a flat at something north of 200 and _not_ immediately stuff the car into a fence.
Matt 'Sons of Epsilon' Claypole I don't think he's ever clarified it, but the rumour was that he was offered the Benetton drive for 95 due to sharing his personal sponsor (Mild Seven) with the team. He turned it down as he knew he would be Schumacher's #2 and also because he'd contracted cancer in his back and was keeping it a secret at the time. A shame because he was a talented driver and unlike most others, didn't take himself too seriously!
I dont totally, agree, sure the cars he drove were not good but Katayama only scored 5 little pts for 3 top 6 during the 1994 F1 season.
Being so short when they made the cockpt changes it really hit him more than the rest of the drivers
"most" of the drivers?? it didnt effect any of the drivers, in any way.... apart from keeping them safer in the event of an accident. Did you simply read this on wikipedia or something? Nearly all Formula 1 drivers are of relatively small stature, and even then, the cockpit is always bespoke and catered to its corresponding driver for that year. He doesn't need your excuses, to think something as silly and trivial as that would end his career essentially, is, quite simply, ludicrous.
"Ukyo Katayama, *Keiichi Tsuchiya* and Toshino Suzuki"
The Drift King himself was one of the drivers for that car
Mr .357
Toshio Suzuki was a test driver for NISSAN GT-R(MY2007〜MY2013)
Keiichi was on the GT one
Mr Tsuchiya was one of the LARK Team F1 GTR Longtail driver too in 1997
Beautiful car control!!! A 200+ mph save is what you call talent.
One of the sexiest cars ever driven in LM..
Josip Prša the sexiest
And probably also the best car that never won, sadly.
UnseenLive1 ferrari 330 p4 is better, but i agree with u
Ong
It shit car anyway
It still breaks my heart, 18 years after...
But Toyota is now a Le Mans winner. :)
@@MatthewDaSmitdog Yes. Three times! And two of them with Alonso at the wheel!
@@Extra-dg7uv they winning 5 times now but today Ferrari win Le mans 2023 and Toyota get 2nd positions while Cadillac 3rd
Save of the century, I also think the GT One should have won Le Mans that time
To suffer a tire blowout there, at that speed...I'm pretty sure that even if I were a calm and talented professional racing driver, I'd have decorated the drivers seat with arse biscuits. Phenomenal car control really, that Toyota could have gone anywhere.
Ukyo Katayama has got to be the coolest cat in racing. It looks to me as if he saw the tire failure as just something that happened, and he responded as needed. He couldn't win, he could have cartwheeled into the fence, but he kept his cool and waited until they made his car safe again, and he went back to do his job again. Tell me he admitted at least once that he was a little scared, because he didn't show it.
I reckon this car would have won if it weren't for that bloody puncture.
***** Tis Toyota's legacy at Le Mans. A gearbox issue screwed them in the dying hours of the race in 1994, this puncture screwed them in 1999 and a failure in a piece of FIA monitoring equipment screwed them in 2014
+BritishRail60062 perhaps, but not if the No. 17 BMW handled by JJ Lehto was not wrecked mid morning. No. 17 was about 2-3 laps ahead of the No. 15 winning car.
Yep. IIRC there was a mechanical fault in the throttle, not Lehto's fault. Shame. Kristensen would have had 10 wins, Lehto 3 and Jorg Muller 1
@@Nexus956 Remember that Brundle had a big puncture and Boutsen a big crash.
Transport & Simulation Hub you think so? Fargimg scholor.
This was dramatic but it has absolutely nothing on what just happened at Le Mans this year. Cruel sport, this one
yupi... I know what u are talking about.... 10x worse than this puncture...
What happened?
+BillWilliamRain toyotas car took a shit on the very last lap. didnt even finish the race, had to take ONE MORE LAP. And they would of won.
everybody should investigate what happened in 2010
Toyota's luck at LeMans is like the Andretti curse at the Indy 500. You can even extend it to Japanese manufacturers in general. A Japanese marque has only managed to win the race once (1991)
This dude has outstanding car control - rear tyre blowout on a RWD 600hp+ car doing around 200mph, maybe more, even on that Indianapolis Straight, great job.
^Has pretty much no effect on a puncture at 200mph
Professional race drivers turn off TCS though.
It's funny how almost everyone underrated the Toyota #3 car for being the slowest toyota.
Indeed Le Mans is about not just speed but finishing the race in one piece.
God, that could not be any worse luck, wow... I feel so bad for Ukyo. Very underrated driver, especially after that save.
Was at the race and was biting nails, since I'm a Dane, and it was obvious that Toyota would catch Tom K.
But still think that the GT-One is the most beautiful modern racecar.
Le Mans used the silhouette for many years after
It's nuts how advanced and how far ahead of its time that car was. It should have murdered this race. It made even the Merc's look old and like analogue against digital. The greatest car to never win in my opinion.. I was absolutely gutted that we didn't get to see it have one more go. It's actually pretty crazy how few races they appeared at but maybe that adds to the mystique.. The Eleanor of Le Mans. Unicorn.
Just compare it to a car from 10 years later, like the Peugeot 907. They look quite similar in a way....
Beautiful car, and so fast too. deserved much more...
I got a puncture on my MX5 in a school zone and I didn’t handle it as well as this chap...pure talent, sir!
When all Le Mans 24h cars looked so beautiful and challenging! I miss it I don't know about you guys
Back when i was very young i played gran turismo 3 and when i saw the gt one and heard the engine, omg that was supposed to be a great time.
My love for this vehicle continues to this day, it is such a beautiful vehicle and a true work of art. Such a beautiful shape and such a powerful engine. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I feel like this car belongs to me from my many, many hours playing gran turismo when I was young... It's a beautiful thing. It should have won. One thing for sure, it won all of our hearts
Now that is an awesome racing video. This is the stuff we wanna see! :D
Perfect car control Ukyo knows how to drive!
The same ghost returns this year.. very sad.
The ghost of the legendary Mazda 787B #55 ;)
The ghost of worn apex seals
At least they managed this year...
André Niemand yes but not the way they deserved a win is a win tho.
Ukyo is just dead calm during the entire thing. Incredible.
Perfect car control.
That wasn't a lack of awareness. He knew what he was doing.
Yea, but I doubt he thought about what he was doing, it had to be instinctive.
toyota has so much bad luck in le mans
Its funny, but Ukyo rivaled BMW in Le Mans with Toyota. Now that he's retired and when he worked with GSR Team with BMW since 2010... he brought them into victory with his amazing team management. One of the most well respected Japanese Drivers of all time.
One of my dream cars
Probably the 2 best looking race cars ever!
Beautiful car control from Katayama! These cars are stuffed do control when a tyre blows out!
foooooook what a save , amzing skill
extraordinary save!
This is very exciting race!
What a dirty team order...
Bscher cant drive though
Best car that never won Lemans?
Maybe?
Yes.
"If it hasn't broken by now it's not gonna break"
got to love tsuchiyaa!
I love the Toyota GT-ONE!
Nice driving Yaganoko
2017. The ghost strikes again.
Ukyo Katayama: not even close to crashing...
@spectre1209 Cheers mate :) I´ve been thinking about that sponsorship for YEARS. Espacially the the fron is perfect for Marlboro, as Toyota placed there some other stickers and it basicly looks like the Marlboro logo, on the other hand, it is´nt. Just like McLaren did over years witk West/Mika/David/Kimi. Thanks again !
@dtmfan I always loved the 98 tear design they used. The ones with the white streaks down the car.
I love this car. So unique. So fast. I wish Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes would've stayed in sports cars to give Audi a run for their money.
2023 they will all be fighting again
well technicly the rules for gt1 was that a certain number of the cars would have been made for road use in order to be homologated
But toyota finally succeeded this year!
And that's because they had no competition. If Porsche was there, it would have been another story.
@@MDDeGrande1994 i dont think so, in 2016 the car broke with like 6minutes left or something like that, they could have won that year
They are back for revenge at Le Mans this year with the TS030!
@dtmfan No problem. You might actually be able find a photo of the car with the barcode. I've heard they did run it very briefly, probably in testing.
my fave car in Gran Turismo
what suberb reaction time and skill!!
Good News Everyone!
"he won't do anymore damage going over those kerbs"
er...
superb car control, its a shame Katayama is mostly remembered for his f1 accidents as he was a hell of a driver on his day
Ukyo: puncture puncture
Team manager: ok ukyo-san box this lap
Great!!👏👏katayama.👏
i did notice that... i was wondering if it was a slow punkture or it picked up debree there which worked it self in to the tire
I think if the tire technology and car settings are in harmony, this car already won for Toyota team...
Beautiful machine along with the Bentley speed 8 why can't they make race cars like these anymore
good job ukyo!
man! that Bmw should of been blacked flag, cause he wanst even trying to follow the race line!, more like blocking cause he knew he was about to be overtaken!
2007suprasport BMW drivers! Natural born Assholes! ;-)
They won this year
Years later, his Super GT team's car also has a habit of getting punctured...
Luckily, didn't happen this year... yet...
And now BMW and Toyota are making Supra together lol
even a grown man cried
nice fuckin save
Anything that wins the 24 hours of Le Mans cannot be average...
Toyota has some terrible luck at the Le Mans. The TS020 faced the same 2nd place finish under the same circumstance that forced the TS010 to lose.
Anybody else notice the tyre smoke in the middle of tetre rouge? The left-rear was rubbing on the fender...
Please upload all Le Mans 99 from Eurosport!
Shit broke my heart
When there's opponents of same class, they never win.
I saw that live. I was so disappointed
Toyota might have had 3 wins at LeMans if it wasn't for these last minute mishaps.
Toyota's curse continues. Absolutely gutted.
and again
What curse?!? its not curse but engineering and craftsmanship...
I'm from the future. It has ended
at least he didn't went flying
We're lucky Toyota is nice about it and hasn't gone all Ray Finkle on BMW.
2:31 there you go
What did the commentator say at 0:27?
How can one manufacturer has so much bad luck on one race track than Toyota?😅 But that's Le Mans. You don't win it, it let's you win🤷♂️
heh, the classic commentator's curse - Murray Walker-style
Reliability is one of the most important things in endurance racing. If a car is average in terms of speed but brilliantly built, I wouldn't consider it to be an average car. Just my opinion though.
Wow they made the car from Gran Turismo in real life!
Toyota GT-ONE, best looking Le Mans car ever. Mercedes CLR #2
why would toyota quit i love this car
I see keiichi tsuchiya, surely he ruin the tire before ukyo take the car 😂
Crappy bmw really need to gtfo the way.
the bmw damaged his tire cutting him out of the corner almost provoking a accident. notice is the exact tire that was in contact...
