Acid rain is made up of highly acidic water droplets due to air emissions, most specifically the disproportionate levels of sulphur and nitrogen emitted by vehicles and manufacturing processes. It is often called acid rain as this concept contains many types of acidic precipitation.
The acidic deposition takes place in two ways: wet and dry. Wet deposition is any form of precipitation which removes acids from the atmosphere and places them on the surface of the earth. In the absence of precipitation, dry deposition of polluting particles and gases sticks to the ground through dust and smoke.
Causes of Acid Rain -
The causes of acid rain are Sulphur and Nitrogen particles which get mixed with the wet components of rain. Sulphur and Nitrogen particles which get mixed with water are found in two ways either man-made i.e as the emissions that are given out from industries or by natural causes like lightning strike in the atmosphere releasing nitrogen oxides and volcanic eruptions releasing sulphur oxide

Acid rain is caused by the release of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere from sources like burning fossil fuels. These pollutants react with water vapor and other chemicals in the air to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and nitric acid (HNO3).
The acid rain model involves a few key steps:
1. Emission: SO2 and NOx are emitted into the atmosphere from sources such as cars, power plants, and industrial processes.
2. Transformation: In the atmosphere, SO2 and NOx react with oxygen and other compounds to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
3. Transport: Winds can carry the acids over long distances, allowing them to travel far from their original source.
4. Deposition: Acid rain falls to the ground as rain, snow, or dry particles. When it comes into contact with the ground, it can impact soil, water bodies, vegetation, and even buildings.
5. Effects: Acid rain can harm ecosystems by leaching essential nutrients from soil, damaging aquatic life, and harming forests. It can also corrode buildings, statues, and infrastructure.
Efforts to reduce acid rain include regulations to limit emissions of SO2 and NOx from industrial and transportation sources.
