- Ethiopia's Orthodox Tewahedo Church is one of the largest and oldest in Africa.
But there's been a split within its ranks after three Bishops formed their own patriarchate they named 'Oromia and Nations and Nationalities Synod’ last month.
The move led to weeks of unrest, divisions and violence in some regions.
The government has banned rallies and restricted social media.
But the fallout could still have ramifications for the Church itself and the country.
So, what's behind this schism in the Ethiopian Orthodox church?

According to the 1997 census it was about 43% when the population size were 70million but now a time it is more than 120million so undisputablly the size of Orthodox is >60million

All oriental orthodox churches, from Russia to Egypt and India, interfaith leaders, muslim leaders, and the Catholic pope have expressed their support to the unity of EOTC and to the one and only Patriarch of Ethiopia, Abune Matias.
Add to the complexity of the situation, security issues with the upcoming African Union Heads of States' meeting in Addis. The Govt banned the rally called by EOTC on Sunday and closed streets to prepare for it and avoid further damage to its image. Also note last week's massive rallies in support of the unity of EOTC. Millions flocked to all the churches in Addis and across the country for 3 days of prayers for the unity of the church. Pictures of the massive turnout for evening vigils where everyone was dressed in black, as requested by the church, went viral and showed the strength of the EOTC. In a few churches in the Oromia region, where the renegade bishops were ushered in by Oromia armed forces, those who defended the church from the hostile takeover were harassed, jailed, or martyred by Oromia forces. Instead of standing with the legal EOTC, the Govt sided the rebels and falsely accused the church of fomenting a coup with the support of political groups and businessmen: an excuse to crack down on all dissidents, especially Amharas. What will happen after the AU meeting is anybody's guess. But trust was broken when the PM addressed his cabinet on the issue, siding the rebels who are openly embraced by the Oromia leadership and funded by enablers from the protestant community. Ethiopia didn't need another crisis after the devastating war staged by TPLF ended with 600,000 deaths and massive destruction. We need to pray for peace and unity. The new ethnic based dominance by Oromo leaders is a bad imitation of TPLF's rule under an ethnic federal system enshrined in the EPRDF constitution. It is mind boggling to see the most charismatic leader and Nobel laureat embraced by ethiopians at home and abroad lost his supporters and is perceive as the architect of the demise of Ethiopia's unity and national integrity. Trust was broken but let's see if it's irreparable.
