As someone who's autistic and very introverted, Sebastian is my favorite mostly because he feels like the kind of person I'd be comfortable with in real life. I also like Harvey for the same reason; he's quiet, he's shy, and I relate to him. With either of them I can just do my own thing and they can do theirs. It really depends on what kind of person you are, I think.

what i love abt him is how he doesn’t become lovey dovey overnight like the other marriage candidates. it’s just a bit unrealistic that someone’s whole personality changes overnight just bc you married them nd i just love how he has his own life nd doesn’t revolve his entire life on you just bc you two are together. just goes to show how love rlly doesn’t fix everything but at least makes things a bit better.
shane's story was still better also it technically isnt overnight i mean once they date you get close you feel more comfortable but he didn't
Some of the characters do feel a bit OOC after they settle down, don't they?
Part of why I love Elliott is that his over the top declarations of love actually feel in character for him, rather than just feeling like "well he's married so he has to be love dovey". All his dislouge feels exactly like something a hopeless romantic aspiring author/Fabio lookalike with a flare for dramatics would say.

Personally I think he has a lot of very sweet dialog, before and after marriage. You have to remember that he's a depressed person. A lot of the "rude" lines he has don't come off that way for me. The line were he tells the farmer to go make money I read as a sarcastic joke. Most of the time he apologizes for being lazy some days or you just know he has down days. I could go on forever, but I think he's a bit deeper emotionally than most of the other marriage candidates. He doesn't get all lovely right away, if you keep up his hearts during marriage he says I love you all the time. Even if he leaves or goes for a walk he will say something sweet. However there is a sharp turn if you neglect him. I definitely don't think you have him enough time lol
Yeah, right? I see really cute his dialogues when he says "I didn't do the dinner, sorry for being lazy" and the "My day wasn't so exciting, tell me about yours" (or something like that, I'm just paraphrasing). He's trying to do his best being a husband and still being him, he's trying to be lovely and comfortable at the same time. He says too "I'm trying to adjust to the farm schedule, before I used to sleep at 5 am and wake up at 2 pm or something like that" (paraphrasing again). He's a such lovely husband and doing his best and I just love him for that.
One time, his heart dropped by one, and he got really suspicious of me saying he saw me in town and wanted to know ehat i was doing. Oops! Gave him a frozen tear and he was fine after that. At that point i was giving him lots of loves and kisses since that day xD little Seb almost got jealous. But the one dialog that always makes me melt is when he ask you come closer to him when you look cold 😊

He does say I love you some times after you marry him, there's a line very simillar to the "I need some time to myself" but then it continues saying "I guess its my nature, I still love you though. See you in the evening" its something like that
In my 1 year experiment I only ever heard him say that ( and similar ) 3 times total
had more " lazy " dialogue

It's honestly too bad that Sebastian doesn't open up a little more with us before the marriage. True we get to do some things with him just spending time, and there is some dialogue that shows us why he's like that but the real 'draw' of marrying him is that he's the emo boy, he doesn't bring a lot else to it. I adore him but maybe we should have seen more with the frogs before the marriage or just a cut scene with him being out in Cindersap and getting to explain polywogs to the kids? It would have been super cute and added more to him.
While I agree that his heart scenes don’t show a lot of romance progression by themselves, I think when combined with a lot of his casual dialogue, you get a story of a reserved introvert who actually has social anxiety; he’s not really comfortable around people, sometimes even his own friends. But as you show interest in him, his work, and the things he enjoys, he starts to open up to you.
Originally he talks about escaping the valley, escaping a place where he feels stuck and unhappy. I think a lot of it is the family situation-though he shows interest in his basement room, there are several hints that he feels unloved and unappreciated in comparison to Maru. It’s causing strain on their relationship as well. I imagine as he and the farmer get closer, the farmer will share that being in the city didn’t make them happy; it wasn’t a place they would go back to. And maybe that starts to change Sebastian’s mind on going there-it’s no longer an idyllic dream, just an escape. He has dialogue explaining that he had a romantic ideal in mind for the city, and now sees it as something unsuited to him. He’s happier once he’s in his own home and pursuing interests that he hadn’t considered before.
To be honest, I’m always so baffled when people typecast Sebastian as an “emo boy,” because I never once got that vibe from him. 😂
But yes, definitely agree that his pre-marriage heart scenes could offer a bit more affection and I wouldn’t complain~

He doesn't hate his mom though... When you marry him sometimes he visits Robin and he says "she deserves to be happy" when you talk with him. I adore Sebby cuz I have some social anxiety myself. I relate in sharing similar comfort styles, needing alone time to recharge, hesitant to warm up to people, iffy step family, even having my bedroom in the basement 😂. His marriage dialogue makes me happy cuz he'll still be introverted but is working on coming out of his shell and it's heartwarming for me 🥺. I'm a loser for this man haha
It definitely feels like he’s secretly a mama’s boy. Especially considering the fact that he genuinely enjoys his mother’s cooking
I really like Sebastian as a spouse. He seems realistic and level headed. As someone, who does tabletop rpg regularly, I really liked his heart event where you get to game with him, Sam and Abigail in his room.
My favourite line from him is the one where he tells the farmer that during the previous night the farmer had a horrible nightmare and seemed to be very scared and then he expresses that he found it really cute, while blushing. I'm convinced he has a sadistic streak burried deep in his heart based on this line alone.
21:20 he actually tells you too, if you're patient enough. he blushes then mentions that he's happy he married you even though he doesn't really show it because he simply doesn't know how to.
seb was the first person i married and i fkn fell in love w him. it doesnt show a lot in the cutscenes, but in dialogue after marriage hes actually so sweet and open, its a shame you didnt get ot see it
now im in my fourth run and got the yandere mod someone said in chat, plus another mod that makes him less,,,,,, insane? in a sense? bc the og yandere mod is kinda unhinged and with the second one it makes him more like, head over heels w the farmer which makes it more interesting

For me personally, he's my favorite spouse solely because he's the only one closest to my type
I have many problems with Seb, especially with the fact that his nice lines are so rare to get and literally 90% of his dialogue I got from him was either that he wants to read comics all day, asking if we had pizza in the fridge, or asking for time alone. The last one appeared almost every day. I personally don't feel that loved by him because of that. I also feel really bad about ripping Seb away from Sam and Abby because Seb literally stated that he's not close friends with them anymore. I also get icky feelings when he says that you're the only person he needs now because I don't think that's really a healthy mindset. He's still always the spouse that I go for in all my runs, it's just that you really should think about what he says post-marriage. I feel like I could never really take him that seriously because of how edgy his lines are. Keep in mind that he has quite a few lines about money, whether it be that he's thankful for all the money the farmer has provided or asking about their financial situation and hoping not to resort to selling his laptop (at neutral hearts). It can come off as him only marrying the farmer for money sometimes. He also rarely gave me gifts (and out of all the spouses I think his gifts are the worst...). The only gifts he gave me were coffees but I always felt bad for him because that means that he had a nightmare that night.
Now on the plus side; he jokes around with the farmer. I haven't married many other characters so far so I can't really say much about what others say but I appreciate that Seb has a side to him that jokes around. He's a prankster and teases the farmer. I saw many people saying how they didn't like Seb saying "Hey. Look at me. Never forget that I love you... you're everything to me. Now go make us some money" but I find it cute how he's joking with the farmer. It's not everyone's sense of humor but it certainly is mine. Not to mention the comment about the farmer's nose. His high hearts lines are very hit or miss to me but I love the ones where he compliments the farmer.
Unfortunately, I could list off way more cons than pros which makes it hard for me to absolutely love my marriage with him. He's my favorite edgelord in Stardew and I'd give him an 8/10. I wish that he had more development post marriage. He feels more like a roommate than a husband to me because of how he behaves.
See, and I have the complete opposite feeling about Sebby post-marriage. Lots of people complain that the spouses become furniture in your house, but Sebastian always seems to have his own life going on. He’s still freelancing (at least, that’s my interpretation); he’s started up a hobby around rescuing frogs, something suited to his interests; he still works on his bike on Saturdays and goes on rides; he visits his family every Monday and hangs out with his friends on Fridays at the Saloon still. I find a lot of his loving lines, especially if he’s worrying about you or mentions that even when he needs some time alone, it isn’t because he doesn’t love you (which is really in tune with someone introverted). His life doesn’t revolve around his partner, but he still shows them love and affection in his own way. I’m fairly certain I’ve encountered lines where he mentions that he’ll handle dinner as well.
When you play as a female farmer, there is obviously the case of being pregnant versus adopting for same-sex couples. I encountered several dialogue points where he’s asking how I’m doing given I’m “with child” while still working about the farm (and other more dangerous prospects, LOL!). So, I’ve always found him to be more attentive and caring than people might give him credit for because his loving lines might not be as frequent unless you’re interacting with him a lot.
In terms of not being as close with Sam and Abigail anymore, I have to wonder if that’s because he isn’t reaching out or if they aren’t, since Seb still goes to the Saloon every Friday as he did before marriage. He’s always had more mature prospects than Sam and Abigail-freelance work, trying to decide what his life plan is. If he moved to Zuzu City for work, would Sam and Abigail still try to keep up the friendship in that scenario? These are obviously questions with no real answers, but they are fun to think about~
This is such a good write up!! Post this video i went back on the save file and got a line about him not seeing his friends anymore too and I also found it.... weird. Like dude you can have outside of me, I actually encourage it :|

Fun story about the pier dialogue: I didn’t know it was a loop, so I organized my story building in one file to propose to Sebby on the pier, but instead of doing the “hug option,” he just kept giving the same “the ocean is best enjoyed alone” line. I would have been disappointed if I wasn’t laughing so hard-what a sad place for a repeat dialogue. XD
Awwww, I’m so sad that you weren’t able to get more of his loving dialogue. (I think some of the furniture blocked his pathing, which causes spouses to get frustrated. Not the best game mechanic.) Because Sebastian actually helps out a lot around the house, and he’s really good with kids if you choose to have them. He’ll make you coffee in the morning. Sometimes he’ll mention going out on his bike, but he will add that needing time alone isn’t because he doesn’t love you-which is so in tune with being introverted. He’ll talk about worrying about you if you’re having a nightmare that night. He really is a sweet person, but you need to check out more of the dialogue.
One of the best things I love about Sebby is that he actually has a character arc if you follow his dialogue, including random lines you can find in passing. He’ll be distant and reticent towards you, but you slowly see that he’s introverted and anxious around other people. He talks about wanting to get out of the valley, hence his focus on Zuzu City. But as you grow closer to him, he starts to tell you that maybe he isn’t suited for the city and all of the people there-he had a romantic ideal in mind, but now that he feels happy and comfortable with you, he’s more content on the farm working as a freelancer. I think he was unhappy and feeling stuck in life, but once he connects with the farmer, he opens up and finds the quiet life more suited to his goals. However, I can understand not finding this story thread if you’re only checking the heart scenes. In isolation, they don’t offer an obvious affection progression.

I also think I had too high expectations for character arcs after just coming off the Haley video, it can also be difficult to find the more rare pieces of dialogue when I go through a whole characters storyline in only like 3 hours :( I know Seb has a piece of dialogue talking about Abigail which I thought would be fun to hear!
@@NinoKito - Nah, it's completely understandable! I've married Sebastian more times than I can count, so I've had a lot of time to find all of his dialogue from so many interactions. His character arc isn't as clear-cut as Haley's, and unless you are interacting with him daily, it's much harder to find everything.
I think your format of only having a stream to connect with the characters opens up an interesting angle to view them from, so I look forward to seeing how your rankings progress in this manner! Thanks again for this fun exploration of my fave character; the Batman voice had me in stitches~
The reasons I choose Sebastian:
- he was the first who's dialog lines changed after we reached enough hearts.
- he's into IT and rides a bike which is not much of a thing but one of an aestetic I want in myself.
- our traumas matched perfectly. ''I often felt unnappriciated back home, but here I feel like I truly belong. Thanks for making me feel welcome, anon'', he said and my heart shattered into pieces. I feel him.
- ''I need to stay indepentedent... still love you though'' exactly the type I am. I love you, but I am I and you are you.
- also ''I need some time to myself, see you at evening''. He will understand me, who's an introvert, and my desire of privacy.
- he tries to quit smoking but not because he wants to please me, but because he realises that it's a bad habit and he wants to see our future together. He wants to change to be better.
- also I wanna be the sugar mommy and he's more than a match for me. I can spoil him with stuff without making it dirty or taking his opportunity being something without me.
- he's a sweet boy and what more do I need?
Someone down said that he's not much of a good lover because he doesn't give gifts and rarely says something cute, but I dunno... I never knew spouses are supposed to give you gifts, he's my first and only one. I sell all the gifts anyway because I see no reason to store stuff I don't need. And he says how much he loves me CONSTANTLY, maybe because I speak to him three times a day and even come back home earlier just to give him a goodnight kiss.
I’m confused cause he tells my farmer he loves them all the time lol thanks them almost everyday and helps out on the farm. So weird how everyone’s rng is different. Also fun fact the bachelor who says I love you the most is not Harvey not even Elliot but is actually Seb. Second is Alex&Sam. You just have to put up with him being a moody drama queen here and there but that’s kind of expected.

He has a motorcycle, he has issues so he's easy to relate to, but not to the point of it being draining (Shane). He is caring and sweet, he's not overwhelmingly negative or positive. And he basically plays dnd and is in a band, why wouldn't he be the first choice?
Tbh my first crush in Stardew was his mom Robin xD when I realized I couldn't marry her I was sad then I met Sebastian and one way or another she became part of my family which made me happy, that means I would go out of my way looking for interactions with the two of them so I know a lot about their story and family issues. Seb's dad is gone, his mom remarried and had another child and he feels left out and with good reasons, Demetrius sucks as a step dad and husband tbh and he's overly protective of Maru. I related and empathized with Sebastian introverted and lonely self so that is why he became my fav bachelor and the only one I've ever married, as someone else said in another coment he does have lovely dialogue and guess i have been lucky in that department cause he always makes me feel loved and I am missing the kids related ones cause I refuse to have kids yet we're still a happy married family with lots of animals and slimes as our children xD he does help around the farm even when most of it is automated now, still the thought is what counts right?

its rare but he does. i think some of his dialogues are very repetitive, so its not common to see those.

Sam felt endearing to me at first because of how much he cared for his brother, but it feels weird being in a relationship with him because it feels like I'm dating a teenager. I'm not even old.

I've never had the cleaning/sandwich line. I usually get a lot of wholesome dialogue that shows his character growth, I think you just got unlucky with your Sebastian. Maybe you should've gone for the Abby appearance after all.
He is and always will be my favorite for many reasons. Chiefly, I relate to him a lot and he's just adorable.
Hilariously, I've been married to Seb in my game for years now. I have NEVER seen the comment about not wanting to clean or cook. I had no idea that was a line he had! He's so sweet to me, and makes me coffee all the time.

This is why people created Dialog mods. I use it because I feel all the dialogs of the Love Interests are lacking, in personality and just in general.
Reasons why I like seb: he’s a little silly, he likes frogs and shiny stones (Frozen Tear and Quartz), and he wears incredibly comfortable-looking clothes like 90% of the time (the other 10% is when he’s on Ginger Island or during the flower dance). In other words I like Seb so much because he reminds me of myself (sometimes).
I find this SOOOOO FRUSTRATING because somehow you missed the whole reason I married him which is how sweet he is to you. I’ve never come across the cleaning line before, he’s a bit reserved at first and a bit edgy but as you wait outside his room all day for him to come out and talk to him every day you uncover the best aspects of him. He is a passionate programmer who doesn’t have the support of his family and is kind of neglected because his parents prefer their star child Maru. He might seem edgy and unfriendly but once you get to know him he is really kind hearted and sweet natured, pretty much every day when he’s on full hearts with you he’ll remind you that he loves you. You see, you missed where his arc really starts to show, post-marriage. After you marry him he’s still slightly distant, but slowly gets closer and closer until his true self really shines through and he’s the sweetest person in the village.
He has emotions, you just overlooked them 😢
I like Seb for my spouse BECAUSE he's so independent. I have a job thats literally taking care of, and basically parenting, other people all day long. I don't want to go home and then start parenting/having a very dependent spouse. I like my own space, doing my own thing, and etc BUT I do love the sweet quiet moments of being together.
I also think the whole thing of, "Seb abandons his friends and dreams once you get married" is pretty exaggerated. In his two heart event Seb showed he's still standoffish even with Sam and Abigale. He said he didn't want to hang out with Sam and got annoyed that Abigale was just gonna barge in when he was working which implies she's done it several times before. He also has dialogue when married that he's still doing work but that he's developing a game now. Not to mention he DOES still hang out with Sam and Abigale each Friday. Its totally chill to not like Seb because he's "boring" or "edgy", cause he totally can be, but saying he gave up everything when you get married is just not accurate.
I think a part of Sebastian's appeal is because he's the kind of guarded, secretive character that a lot of players can just headcanon around him to their heart's content.
I actually feel for Seb though, dealing with anhedonia is awful. At best, it's like a lingering boredom you can't seem to break out of, but at its worst, even your favourite meal will taste like ashes.
He gets happier and he stops smoking, too.
This is why I married Shane, he hates you at first but in the end he says so much cute stuff, it’s almost heartbreaking what he went through. He watered the plants sometimes, watered the cat, repaired fences(quite often actually) and he’s just so pretty
I don’t think he hates you at first. I mean if you think about it he’s not a very social person in general, he’s an alcoholic so he probably has a hangover 24/7 and the usual times you speak to him aren’t great timings (either going to work or coming home from work, drinking at the bar). It’s not a matter of him hating the farmer it’s a matter of him just not wanting to talk to a stranger when he’s not feeling social for any of these reasons, all of which are pretty understandable.

As someone struggling with severe depression i can actually relate to seb tho. Not feeling like going out, rather reading some comics than sozializing, etc etc. And yeah living in a windowles basement prolly doesent help much but his family really didn't had any space in the house for an extra room so maybe he didn't even choose to live down there. Ofc he sometimes act edgy just standing somewhere alnoe looking in the distance but i'd argue hes not just so me emo boy trying to be edgy just for the sake of it but has actual struggles bc the signs are there for sure. So in the end i think his depressed personality really isn't the main point of being a problematic choice for a husband but he can be very childish too. Don't get me wrong he'd be a very lovable boyfriend but i think when it comes down to marriage both parties need to be realiable. I know for myself with how hard it is to manage oneself when struggling with mental health that i wouldn't make a reliable partner for marriage. I would choose to marry seb again however if i had to just because i would really love sitting on the couch reading comics together with my husband but irl i would't choose to marry someone with similar issues than me because we would just make each other miserable like that.

I'm currently romancing Sebastian. I'm a 10 hearts with him and I've really enjoyed his story. He goes from just being negative to syaing how hes happy you're there and just cute little things to show that you mean a lot to him. Personally in real life I feel like I'd be more of his friend rather than him being my boyfriend

as a person who lived a whole year married to Sebastian, if you own a farm or any animals, you do get some caring from him. You'll get scenarios where he tells u he got up too early and had nothing to do so he did all the chores. Like you'll see all crops already watered or all animals are fed. and sometimes he mentions that he loves you and is happy being ur husband. i dont have any experience with other bachelors, but personally he's the most wholesome one.
Honestly I’ve never seen the appeal of Sebastian. One time I married him because I had a poly heart events mod for Seb and Abigail but like… I never found him interesting. Every day I’d go and talk to him and he’d ask “do we have frozen pizza?” GIVE ME MY ROMANCE DUDE

There are a lot of mods that adds more to Sebastian, I feel like there are a lot of missing things about him, like his family issue. and that's one of the reasons I can't play Stardew Valley without mods anymore, it feels so empty. im looking for the 1.6 update, since Eric said he will include new dialogues

i married him mostly because i like his personality and he genuinely has such nice cutscenes and i remember when he used to say he would like to get out of that terrible household one day which is why i also took him in with open arms
Post marriage imo is one of the parts of the game that needs more work. I'd love mods that expand on it, because most characters seem to lose all their personality once you're married :(
When I first played Stardew I immediately wanted to marry Seb. The only problem was that I ended up marrying Alex because I was able to talk to him more. Once I figured out that everyone has a schedule. My next game I made it a goal to befriend sam and hunt Seb down when he finally leaves his room lol. He's a very sweet husband and his interactions are adorable especially when he asks if your single 🥰
I have a suggestion for this series: you should totally do Sam or Alex
I love Sebastian because I relate to his situation. Being anxious around people, and having your parents play favourites. I like to marry him because I wanna get him out of that dingy basement since his step dad just ignores him and his family thinks it’s more important to have a lab then a room for Sebastian with a window. And since him and maru are close to age this has been happening since he was a toddler. His family just doesn’t take any of his hobbies and job seriously
Introvert extraordinaire here, Sebastian's dialouge in this had bad luck. He has a lot of loving dialouge, and you got, like, none.
Also, I have NEVER seen the "Make you a sandwich? Clean up?" Dialouge. Never happened once. He also helps out of my farm 1/2 the time.

i found him a little annoying after marriage at first but he does actually warm up to you, takes care of the farm, shows concern for your wellbeing in the mines. just like everyone else. and sure this development probably should've taken place BEFORE marriage but i still like how he doesn't immediately just switch a flip and become a completely different person. i personally am not good at expressing emotions so i kinda get that part of sebastian's personality tho

sebastian has been my favorite almost as long as ive been playing the game, which has been a while. married him so many times. ill admit i was (still am) mainly into him because i totally have a thing for emo boys, but i also like him because im a lot like him myself, and ive had a lot of friends who are like him. im used to being patient, so whenever he was more distant i never thought twice about it. just like "you need some alone time? aight, im gonna go injure myself in the mines see u soon" lmao.
if i ever actually married someone, id want them to be independant. just like i want my friends to be independant. its important to keep a sense of self when youre in a relationship and not depend too much on the other person. speaking as someone whos gotten into trouble with that, as a former therapist friend. i like that seb feels like hes doing that. besides, hes a total sweetheart and loves frogs how can you honestly hate him???

Admittedly I think you got some rotten luck on the dialogue with him! Im married to him in my main run and he often says things abt how you make him feel appreciated and like you want him around, unlike at home; also things like "Even though were married, I have to be independent. I still love you though." he also takes an interest in the farm, wanting to get into raising slimes with you, which is cute and appropriately edgy. I think thats why I like him so much as a SDV spouse, he's really communicative about who he is and how he operates, while still being openly fond of you. But I totally get like, in contrast to more effusive spouses why he might not be for some people. (My own effusive spouse of choice is either Elliot or Leah tho)

When i first played stardew valley, i never had a relationship and sebastian was my fave candidate. Now that I've had a relationship and an ex, I just realized how similar both of them are. He was also cold, very busy with work, only has a few trusted friends and just likes to stay in his room all day, but opened up to me and eventually when we became close, I confessed to him. He's also a depressed edgy catboy btw lol. A few months in, I broke up with him because he has vices I hate and I felt that he doesn't really enjoy his time with me, I felt neglected. We're still friends, but right after our breakup he went back to being alone and his guard is up with me. Damn guess i have a thing for depressed emo catboys even irl-
I'm really thankful for this video because i'm totally unable to try this myself, because as soon as i started to know him, he reaminded me of my older brother and i just can't do it-

I questioned if I should go for Sebastian again (it's my 4th playthrough) or just go to the others but in the end I am going for him because he just fits my interest in a man perfectly. I love that he needs time for himself and not smother you with cute words and gives you space (don't get me wrong i like if my man actually shows some feelings xD) but I am not that overly romantic so he is perfect in that regard. And he shows you that he cares in little details. And you can improve his life a lot if you marry him and I wanne see him happy! It depends really on your taste and if you give him time, he is really showing some love after the marriage.
imo he's a perfect choice because you really DO improve his life and he tells you exactly why and thanks you for it. other marriage candidates I feel like you sort of sacrifice some of their dreams and hold them back. with Sebastian you can see the clear improvement in his life and that he's happier. as someone who also struggles with anxiety/depression/their family it's extremely endearing.

I don't dislike Sebastian but I'm curious to why he's liked so much. I married him once and married life with him isn't as great as I was lead up to believing. All he does is stay home, the food he makes isn't the best and to top it off he barely helps fix gates or feed animals. Compared to Shane who not only unlocks blue chickens, hangs out with his little buddy Charlie, fixes gates and feeds my animals almost every day it's insane that he has more love then any of the other bachelors. If anything Shane is my favorite out of all the other bachelors he has a character arch that makes me smile.. From a man who dislikes you to a man who loves you and gives you that goofy middle age smile I know and love if anyone is looking for the best bachelor, to me it would be him.

when he's going out for a walk or drinks, he says the usual "i'm going out" line but adds an "i love you"
he compliments how "you always look great, even after slopping around on the farm all day" (that one's word-for-word, i had an old screenshot)
