  • In this film Robert D. Kaplan explores how in 2007 America is now effectively an empire. As a reporter for the Atlantic Monthly and author of eleven books he's seen this empire develop first hand.
    "The essence of empire is not fighting, is not conquering, it's training indigenous forces to project power on their own, in their own interest but also in your interest."
    --Robert Kaplan

    IM Australian and have visited USA since 1984. The amount of poverty and homeless around cities like LA, is unbelievable and makes the USA spending military money everywhere for "freedom" seem very suspicious.

    I do not understand the "now". As far as I know the US are an empire at least since the war with Spain which was basically the US inheriting the domiance over South America from them. After WW1 the American people did not want to go the way Wilson wanted them to go and retreated into "isolationism" meaning contending itself with South America and the Pacific region. The empire ecame global with the Cold War with permanent basis in Europe and Japan+Korea and from then on it grew.

    The sad thing is - the United States of America - proselytizing democracy - but the US doesn't have democracy in its own country. It is a representative republic by design - and the representatives are ruled not by their representatives - but are strongly influenced by lobbyists and money interests.
    And the other sad thing is - that the US military is the main diplomatic face of the US globally. And the idea of the US is democracy so that US corporate interests can be served globally.
    And you try to put a pretty face on this - peace through a show of force - fighting terrorists etc. But the truth is - if there are no US corporate interests in that country - the US military is not there. But the Philippines used to be a US colony stolen from Spain - and this is why the US are still there - even after giving them "independence".
    And the fact that the US think that having US military presence in countries is a necessary matter - shows the arrogance of the US. To think that US's system is the best and only form of democracy...
    BUT what about Saudi Arabia? The US has military bases there - in a Muslim country - a Kingdom - a dictatorship - and the US don't speak about bringing them democracy... because the real religion of the US, is controlling resources or access to resources for the US military and US corporations - Not Democracy. Democracy is just used as an excuse for the US to assert its influence in a country.
    And if you think that the military is the best diplomatic body to act in other countries - then it shows the mindset of the US.

    American empire has come to stay.Yes history has witness the rise and fall of enpires but the AMERICAN EMPIRE WILL LAST 4 A VERY LONG LONG TIME IF NOT 4 EVER,.because America has got what the other fallen empires lack and that is FREEDOM and TRUE DEMOCRACY the world has ever known.and that is why its called THE LAST EMPIRE.

      @VioletDeliriums Před 9 lety +2

      goldy star It depends on what type of freedom you are talking about. But that last statement has nothing to do with you being a fascist or not -- you can be a citizen in such a country and still be a fascist. When you build a wall between yourself and others then scapegoat that other and you whatever you think is wrong with them to oppress or attack them, you are being a fascist.
