I kind of feel like Caesar's "At Munda I fought for my life" quote was sort of a hyperbolic way of him memorializing his friend. Like, he was a tyrant and everything, but from how Caesar would conduct himself militarily, it strikes me as a quote that was intended to give high honor more to Labienus than to praise himself. Maybe I just like the sentimentality and tragic components of that thought though.
Caesar didn't generally speak ill of his foes anyway, politically or otherwise. Only those he really, really had severe grievances with. Maybe in private he talkes more shit, but publically, being respectful of enemies played into his policy of clemency towards opponents in the civl war. After all, it's reasonable to think he would not have killed Pompey and instead brought him back to Rome.

Julius is going to start executing people in Rome like a maniac, Brutus Snow is going to stab him for it to save what's left of the republic, and maybe the world.
Octavian (which wasn't Octavian anymore, he was now Augusts) having done nothing noteworthy until that point took the throne. The republic was never restored, Rome turned into an empire with brothels instead of ports.
Cleopatra ruled Egypt as the queen in the south that no one gave a shit about.
The soldiers that served under Julius were not important enough to the story to have their own ending.
They never found anything west to Europe, America isn't in their story at all.
Overall the story of Rome was thrilling and interesting, but they just decided to finish it too fast through Julius, a well-loved character to madness and treason, and finish the entire story like it was never built-up. They teleported the characters from Rome to Africa to the Middle East to Spain while the first season gave us years of focus around Rome and Gall.
And the Lebinus arc - from the moment Julius marched to Rome, his "equal" Lebinus was out to get him. Lebinus is coming they said... He died in 1 fight by not watching the enemy jump at him from behind.
We're making a petition for a re-write of the story. To tell God that this ending doesn't do justice to the rest of the story.

I never understood how people could claim the conquest of Gaul was Ceaser's greatest achievement. One thing that makes it difficult to judge generalship through history is you rarely ever get an apples to apples comparison. Ceaser vs Gual is a conflict with drastically different experience, resources, and really just about everything. Ceaser in the Roman Civil War is multiple battles between armies that are designed, trained, and equipped similarly, where one of the few differences in each conflict is the quality of leadership on the battlefield. It's those fights, the fact that he won against other experienced and respected leaders, often with fewer troops and a worse position, that prove Ceaser deserves his reputation.
The point is that a battle against romans can't be considered his greatest feat. Hes not talking about the hardest battle when he says that.
yeah but fighting 1 quadrillion gauls with 8 measly legions is far more amazing
@@zezzyyeiji26631 quadrillion Gauls because non combatants were likely included and then numbers were exaggerated. Most likely, they were decentralized tribes with irregular soldiers.
We remember the Gallic Wars better than the civil war probably because Caesar wrote about them himself in order to propagandize his victories. He would have had a harder time aggrandizing himself by pointing to the times he fought fellow Romans--as the video on his triumphs pointed out--so they aren't as well remembered by us now because Caesar (and his successors' later propagandists, I would assume) wouldn't brag about them.
And also because we're all map painters at heart, and Gaul is a rather huge chunk of land to add to the Roman map.
@@sunid8346 Caesar literally did what none of the great Roman leaders of the future could do. Annex huge swaths of land from the North.
Returning to Rome:
Lepidus: Is it done?

Lepidus: And what did it cost?

I wonder if Caesar reflected on his old friendship with Labienus during his funeral.
He was too dangerous to be left alive.
He probably did. Imagine growing up together only at the last moment separate over a political theory. Forget the funeral, they must have been gutted to see each other and know that only one would walk out alive that day.
He had his soldiers search the Battlefield for Labienus' body and buried him with full military honours. He still considered him a friend despite fighting against him for the past several years.
@@MALITH666 Labienus was foolish to try to preserve the Republic, considering the state it was in. Caesar violated every rule of the Republic, but when the rules only existed to preserve the interests of the Optimatae, it was exactly what Rome needed.
You know you're watching a good series when you can't wait for the conclusion even though you've been spoiled since middle school.

I've always read, without any contradicting sources, that Caesar's marching speed was almost superhuman. I can understand a single carrier or a cohort of scouts being extremely fast, but for him to move an entire army of multiple legions at the pace the sources say it crazy, it makes me think he had people stoned or beaten or docked some of their payment for not keeping up, maybe even a decimation that Caesar made sure never made it into the history books, but I doubt he ever took it that far
His soldiers were probably numbers to him. If he actually cared for his troops, he'd be at peace so they wouldn't die in droves. Losing 10.000 men in a battle, losing them in a forced march. I just do not imagine these guys genuinely regretting all the suffering they brought to this world because they kept doing it over and over. For the army it was a decimation. For Caesar it was just tuesday.

I think that's why Caesar reacted and moved fast as possible before Labienus finished training those new legions to standard Roman level of battle effectiveness. I think that's why Caesar went for slugfest, gambling on quality while knowing that Labienus would simply won't fall for any of his maneuvers or tricks as both have fought together for years. It paid off as flanks defeated their counterparts.
Respect for not extending the video to 10 minutes for more ads unlike other asshat CZcamsrs.
lvlaple4Ever by extending the video to 10 mins he gets it recommended to more people.
I wish he would have. He deserves it compared to a lot of other channels
Historia Civilis: Oh shit didn't think of that...
“..he would be dead in a year.”
😔
:'(
xD
At least he didnt get exiled like me 😉
He died a legend. Glory is fleeting but obscurity is forever!

The all is lost moment was countered with Caesar doing a charisma check near the end of the battle. I'm not surprised.
Man. I don’t think I’ve ever seen another channel where literally every single upload is as high quality as all of yours are. It’s very easy to see the effort being put in to every single video you put out. You’ve done an incredible job with this series and your success is very well deserved!
Every upload we're getting nearer to Caesar's death.. I dont think my heart can take it
Imagine if he didnt die though, Rome might have been still around today...
@Hernando Malinche That's an illegal opinion, sir. I'll need you to come with me. 👮
@Hernando Malinche Ave, Augustus! You are the true traitor!
The senate was made up of incompetent and vile creatures who in return have a single shit about the people of Rome
Okay that's it. His legions were just OP
The dude just won the civil war for a THIRD time.
They say the fall of the republic was coming - but look how much it took do decisively end it.
People always say conquering Gaul was Caesar’s biggest achievement but that he fought for every inch of Roman territory in the civil war is more impressive to me. Usually civil wars ended in Rome only in few battles at most.
@@sarasamaletdin4574 greece, egypt, anatolia, africe, hispania...
Practically everywhere but france and italy itself, excluding minor battles.
Dude, I just watched your whole Julius Caesar playlist. It wasn't like I was ignorant of the man before, but your series put everything in perspective. I finally feel like I have a grasp on his progression through life, and how his life affected Rome and the rest of the world. You're a great teacher. Thank you.
Found this channel less than a week ago and I’ve been bingeing Caesar’s history, can’t wait to find out what happens next episode 😉
Really like your style Historian Civilis
Caesar defeats all his enemies, becomes a god, and conquers his way to china obv

Nice set-up for something that will undoubtedly come into play in the next video.
8:32 I have never been so broken up about a tiny square dragging another tiny square.
Which incidentally makes me wonder whether Caesar actually dragged him there personally.
4K resolution? You've truly outdone yourself with this one. Excellent continuation of the Caesar series, much thanks from a patreon client!

the death of a single square almost made me tear up, damnit how could you historia civilis?
Not gonna lie, kinda got sad when you proclaimed that Labienus died, and then definitely teared up when you talked about the burial of a best friend...
But then again, I did chuckle when you mentioned Octavian, so, that's life, I guess.
I love your videos. Keep'em coming, good man.
What are these copies of comments? What's going on here?
Imma report you to Mutahar if yall don't stop.
Another awesome video from my favourite CZcamsr. I always wondered what happened to Labienus. Now I know thank you👍 Wish he'd said more about Caesar's March to Spain. I read they did 1500 miles in less than a month. So if that's true and they did 1500 miles in say 27 days, that's an amazing 55 miles a day. In sandles, carrying everything and building a defensive structure at the end of each day. I walked 100 miles in 6 days and it almost broke me, my knees and feet!
3:50 Something tells me that fellow is competent, someone who could inherit brick and transform it into marble.

I'll clap for him if he plays his part well.
I feel like the next video is gonna be a sad video for us :( i really really hope you will continue on the story from Octavians point of view after this aswell as marc anthony. I thouroughly enjoy this series
Next? HC has a year left!
I dunno, this one was pretty sad already. Poor Labienus...
lost my gf two days ago, been binge watching these videos and they saved my life. btw, , when i wake up in the middle of the late night, i gear these beautiful music you put in the begining or the end of each video. very good taste, i love them
Labienus 2/S
"He'll be dead within a year". After a lifetime of fighting, killing his friends, breaking promises, corrupting institutions, desacrating religious tradition, submerging himself in crippling debt... Makes you think about the futility of seeking absolute power at the expense of everything else.
@@DazedSpy2 And what ultimately lead to its downfall?
The fact is that the republic was pretty much undefeated and never had an incompetent leader while the empire would have many of these and a lot of civil wars that would eventually cause it's destruction.

Now imagine if our lord and saviour HC trolled us by making the next video about some South African tribe's political system instead of the Ides of March?
HC's next video: The Constitution of the Zulus.
I actually wish HC went back and covered the gap in their period between the Second Punic War and Cicero. There's a ton of interesting stuff there, not only militarily, but sociopolitically, which is the main reason I love HC (it doesn't only cover battles, but also the historical context). Stuff like expansion into Iberia and Greece, rising inequality due to influx of slaves and loss of land by small farmers, the Gracci brothers, Marius and Sulla. All this sets the context which eroded republicanism and allowed strongmen like Caesar to emerge in the first place.
@@gene51231356

God dammit Augustus, Rome was THIS close to becoming a republic again!
No it wasn't really, after the death of the roman middle class and the rise of the land owning aristocrat class and mass slave system, which caused the reforms of Marius and the armies of proletariats more loyal to their general than rome, the republic was doomed. Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Caesar... eventually it had to happen, so it's incorrect, the further you advance in the timeline the less likely it was for the republic to survive.
Really looking forward to the next video. Excellent job
Thank you for this whole series man
