  • Australia has one of the world’s strictest possible quarantine laws and you are only allowed to bring certain items in Australia. If you don’t declare the items you can be liable to pay up to $420,000 and you can be prosecuted for up to 10 years.
    One of the biggest question in overseas student’s mind is should I bring this item in my bag or not. You will need to know what to bring and not to bring before coming to Australia. In this video, Sam explains about what to bring and not bring when packing up your bags for Australia.
    We have divided the video into three main sections.
    - Things you are allowed to bring in Australia without declaring
    - Things you need to declare
    - Things you can’t bring at all.
    Please check all the useful links and let us know if you have any questions about what to bring or not.

    • @overseasstudentsaustralia
      @overseasstudentsaustralia  Před 4 lety +2

      Great to hear that. If you are coming as a student, we suggest to pack the following:
      - 1 hand bag
      - 1 laptop bag
      - 1 carry bag (around 7 kg)
      - 1 or 2 luggage suitcases (around 20 kg)
      Please check the weight that you can bring with the airline you are traveling. Also you can ask if they allow extra luggage for students. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that more bags you are bringing, the more difficult it can be for you to move around.
      You can also download the packing checklist from our website.

My wife will be carrying some of her cosmetics and artificial jewellery. We also have commercially packed branded snacks and sweets.
    In the declaration form, there are no options to declare these. So, is it safe to assume that they can be brought in without declaration or how do we declare those. Can we write it in a piece of paper and hand it over along with the declaration form.

      As long as you have legally downloaded from the right channels. Not a pirated downloads from torrents etc. They have a right to check your phones, usb, anything you are bringing with you. Hope that helps.

      @overseasstudentsaustralia  Před 5 lety

      That's very heavy indeed. The total luggage allowed is around 25 to 30 kgs. You don't need to bring a bill with that. Also consider that you may have to move few times before settling at one place, so it can be challenging to move houses with that heavy item.

      Make sure you have a clear doctor’s note explaining what it is and why you need it and a prescription. You only get fined if you don’t declare items. Even if you can’t bring it in you won’t get a fine if you declare it. Short of illegal drugs, weapons, child pornography (which might have criminal charges) or more than the permitted amount of cash (which you will be charged a tax on), the worst that can happen is it gets confiscated if declared. If you don’t declare it, it gets confiscated and you get a fine.

    • @jessicascoullar3737
      @jessicascoullar3737 Před 3 lety

      mohammed Ali you can carry as much cash as you want provided you declare it if it is over $10000 and you need to be able to show it was legally obtained as this is more of an anti-money laundering rule than anything else. Not sure at what point it is taxed and how much (just that you get fined if over this amount and not declared). Not sure travelling with that much cash is safe however. Probably best to get a bank account set up first and do an electronic transfer. As to how much you will need that will depend on what city you are studying in. Rent is going to be the main cost and is very high in Sydney but can be half the price in other cities. Food is also quite expensive here. What are you going to study for your Masters?

      @@jessicascoullar3737 Hi.. Thank you vvv much for Ur helpful reply. I appreciate it. As you very well pointed out that I have a large amount of cash from Stocks market shares. I Just finished my degree of civil engineering and planning to continue MS in Melbourne Australia by mid of 2021. My objective is to move my Financial there very smoothly and I would be very happy if you help how to set up an account there which I can make international transfer easier for me than carrying cash with me. Which not safe.

    • @jessicascoullar3737
      @jessicascoullar3737 Před 3 lety

      mohammed Ali hi. Not sure if you can set up an Australian bank account from overseas or if you have to wait until you get here. You will need ID (passport should be fine) and I would also take documents proving you have an Australian address and proof of enrolment in your institution. I would recommend St George or Bendigo bank. I worked for a while at Bankwest and they constantly beat us on customer service every year. We would get second or third but never first, it was very frustrating. I have banked with Bendigo before and they are very good. Don’t know much about St George. Would not recommend BankWest in Melbourne as they have closed most of their branches in the eastern states but would if you had been going to Perth. If you have a credit card linked to an overseas account that should tide you over until you can get set up here. Make sure it is a visa or MasterCard as they are the only two that will be accepted everywhere. American Express is accepted in some places but there is usually a surcharge and others probably won’t be accepted at all. Good luck with your studies. Melbourne is a great city, most of my family are there though I am in Sydney at the moment, and hopefully will be virus free by the time you get here.
