  • Train Enthusiast's Video Diary 1986/6/08-Extended
In 1986, Train Tour Promotions Pty Ltd (John McAvaney) organised a tourist excursion for train enthusiasts to travel over Adelaide's passenger train commuter lines of STA [the State Transport Authority (South Australia)].
On Sunday, 8th of June, 1986, the excursion started from Adelaide Terminal (Keswick, South Australia) on a crisscross route over STA lines and lines shared with Australian National (AN) trains.
The route ran from Adelaide Terminal (AN [Keswick]) to Adelaide Railway Station (STA [City]); from Adelaide Railway Station (STA) to Belair Railway Station (STA); from Belair Railway Station (STA) to Grange Railway Station (STA); from Grange Railway Station (STA) to Outer Harbour Railway Station (STA); from Outer Harbour Railway Station (STA) via the "north arm" to Northfield Railway Station (STA); from Northfield Railway Station (STA) to Gawler Railway Station (STA); from Gawler Railway Station (STA) to Noarlunga Centre (STA); and Noarlunga Centre (STA) to Adelaide Terminal (AN).
This video clip is an extended version, which includes the content of "Train Enthusiast's Video Diary 1986/06/08" and "Train Enthusiast's Video Diary 1986/06/08-Northfield", but not the Noarlunga Centre leg.

Listening to the comments from the pax on board as the Bluebird pulls into Adelaide station "I don't like it, it's not a station!" I too felt the same way about the Adelaide station redevelopment back then and I still feel the same way 32 years later. So many memories of the prior station to redevelopment, it was a thriving place with full occupancy of all the shopfronts, stalls and Tavern, not forgetting the announcements from the "Man in Blue". Thanks for posting this little gem, have viewed it a few times now.

What are your thoughts on the upgrades recently, I think its better than nothing. At least the station doesnt feel dodgy now.

Thank you heaps for posting! I managed to spot some old stations that are no longer around and have since been demolished.
The North Arm Road station at 23:17 on the Port Adelaide - Dry Creek line looks simply just a small step down platform. I believe that the other stations along the line such as Rosewater and Wingfield would have had the same structure.

2 types of minimul stations were used. wooden steps, no actual platform & the steps were about 1 or 2 cars long Gawler Oval & Lynton were one of these as well & likely other stations in the 1950s? GM station & Mile End Goods were these but were longer. Then we have a proper platform, but long enough only for one door. NSW still has several of these in use.

2:55 the very distinct Redhen car #339. You also see the Superchook set at 3:03 parked amongst some 2000 class trains. 300 class train at Mile End Goods can be seen at 9:49.

    Hi Robin
See "Train Enthusiast's Video Diary 1986-03-19" for video snippets of commuter buses and trains at the State Transport Authority (STA) Bus/Train Interchange, Noarlunga Centre, South Australia.
See the later part of the video, "Train Enthusiast's Video Diary 1990-07-29", where loco 621 hauled a tourist train south from Adelaide Terminal to the Tonsley Railway Station (Mitchell Park, South Australia).
    Regards
