- Join me as we tour the lied railways station which has been abandoned since 1967. the station has been open since 1881 and has served the line up until 1967 when the station had reduced passenger numbers and was axed from service. Lydd station has been sat here abandoned since then and suffered a fire in 2022 due to vandalism.
the station has been up for debate since then and potentially turned into holiday homes for future development, please take a look at the lydd station preservation group on Facebook to support the course if you wish to do so..
Thankyou for watching, don't forget to subscribe for future content!!

My Late Father was the last Station Master and was there when the line closed, we lived in the station house from 1964 to 1971 as my father moved to Appledore Station in 67 to 71.
He would be sad to see how it's been damaged, for me so many memories of a childhood spent around the railway.
Damn!! I can imagine it would be upsetting 😔 least you have the memories!
Isn't it strange that long abandoned historic buildings remain ignored until their potential resurrection comes up, and they 'mysteriously' catch fire..???
And the word 'Developer' pops up..?? Rent-An-Arsonist...????
I could not agree more david, It would not surprise in the slightest if that was the case!!
Just like what happened to the west pier in Brighton!!!!
@geoffsclassiccars could possibly be yeah!
About right . Reopen line take cars off the road
@colinstickland3130 amen to that!! Road are overcrowded as it is!
So sad about the vandalism. Remember going past it about five years ago and it looked pretty solid.
Yes it really is, unfortunately abandoned places like this are a target for people to loiter around
Well done, vandals make me so mad grrrrrrrr!
Yes me too, very sad 😔
What a shame the station building was so damaged
Yes it really is, at least structurally it's mainly still there
Brilliant video Joe thank you, some people won't get it!!! but if it wasn't for people like you going against the rules we wouldn't have the pleasure to enjoy and watch the forgotten history of trains
Thankyou! Thanks for watching!
There was a second railway in the area, that of Lydd camp which had the same gauge as the RH&D and was used for moving around the quite large camp and moving artillery or armour and was quite a well built network. I did part of my basic at Lydd including the "tin city" training where trainees had to defend and veterans would pose as Irish sounding civilians trying to kill squaddies and civilians, was super cool.
Ahh that's interesting! I will definately be researching that! Thanks for the info! 👍
This will take a great deal of work and finance to put it back into working order.
@alistairkewish651 yes agree.. always a possibility but sadly not very likely
No, the Lydd military lines were of 2-foot gauge, as well as (formerly) a standard gauge siding from the station goods yard.
@@ianjeffery6744 interesting! Will have to research this! Thanks!
Love those old British RR stations. I've seen some stations converted into single family homes.
Yeah I know of a few aswell.. would love to live in one 🙄
Used to work on the Lydd Target railway !! Behind this station in the 1990s !
Nice would of loved to have seen that!
@@Thecheekyengine Don't know if it's still there !! They privatised it! Serco took over in the late 90s and they claimed it was too costly .I did track replacement and track repairs .Was 2ft gauge I think .It Was original built to take shells out to coastal batteries .Then later for training ! They used to put Running men targets on flat wagons and they were hauled by flatish locos powered by VW beetle engines . They went around a loop and they shot at them with heavy machine guns as they went past . After going around the loop a couple of times a trip was set on the ground and it hit a cut off to shut of the engine and it would now come to a halt as it was now in a siding off the loop and going uphill ! The brake lever had to be operated promptly before it started to roll backwards !
@Sam_Green____4114 yeah I've just been looking it up, some of the track is still but obviously still a live firing range, does look 2 foot guage and saw a few photos of the targets on wagons. Very interesting!!
this would have been better squatted in , that might have saved it from the fire. quite simply building owners should take care of their assets, this was a nice place.
Yeah I agree at least it would of protected it!
Agree about the owners, but also wondering if F&HDC couldn't have done a bit more in the way of carrot, stick, or both.
I was brought up at Greatstone not far away. Developers are helping kill the country with their shabby buildings & yes, how odd, places conveniently catch fire. It needs to be a working line again.
Yes it is very strange, although the day of the visit there were a bunch of youths loitering around in there so not out the realm of possibility it was teenagers messing around.. does raise a eyebrow to it though 🤔
Re open it, charge sensible fares , encourage its use. Hopefully it would reduce excess road traffic.
Exactly!! Although since the fire I think it's become more unlikely but would reduce road traffic for sure!!
Reopening would cost a fortune. There are many level crossings which would need bringing up to passenger standards: very different to the standards needed for an occasional freight train. Never likely to be cost effective, sadly.
@neiltonks4627 very true the crossings are a bit obstacle!
It would be lovely to link it up to the wonderful little Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.
Yeah it would actually but that would take some track work to complete!!
If I remember rightly - Dad's Army 'The Royal Train'
Are you sure it was “vandalism” that burn down the station.
We all know developers like burned down buildings.
It does make you wonder tbh.. but no evidence to suggest either..
Yeah, couldn't possibly have been the local toerags who did it, proper bunch of cherubs they are.
Does Lydd have a fire brigade station?
Yes it does, not to far away from here actually
Rebuild the station and have trains stop there do the passengers on the train can shop there and lower the ticket 🎟 prices
Totally unrealistic.
Did it serve the old Lydd airport?
Yes thats correct! It was a connection to the airport
"Mindless vandalism" or a "development opportunity"???
yes it would not surprise me if it was the latter...
@@Thecheekyengine Rather like "The Crooked House" pub in Staffordshire I wonder???
Devils advocate here, is there the population to support re opening? Is there another station within driving/bus distance.
You mention theres holiday lets all over the place, same could be said for preserved stations.
Theres at least two stations in amongst caravan sites in Scotland both have been done up tastefully, and unfortunately we cant save/preserve/reopen every line because ultimately it would mean the tax payer pays more, cuts elsewhere or another just as deserving line not opening.
I believe ashford International, Appledore or rye are the closest stations on the area, there is definately s population I feel that could support it but if it would be used is the question due to regular bus routes through that part of the county.. I think the main obstacle I'd ultimately the levelling up of the crossings really and not so much the use of it as there is a lot of nearby tourist so I'm sure numbers would be there.. but alas you are right in regards to taxpayers going up.. catch 22 really I suppose!
@@Thecheekyengine IF GWRs Battery ex London Underground trains work well they could be used on the "Branch" no need for disels and a simple platform at dungeness under a light railway order could conntect with RHDR. Dungeness being one of the places in the UK where the land is growing , rather than being eroded
@@highpath4776 that could actually be a solution a bit like the 484s but better operated!
Don’t do as I do, do as I say👺
Train station? I think you mean a railway station
My bad 😅
Correct.
It's a RAILWAY station.
If someone asks me for the nearest "Train Station", I point towards the west and say "New York". Lol.
I know it's a silly question I'm going to ask. What's the difference between a train station. And a railway station?
@Misselthwaite train station is more a American term, whilst both technically correct it is railway station in this country.. at least that's my understanding of it 🤷♂️
@Misselthwaite NO. It's not a silly question at all.
Basically, it depends.
If you are an American, absolutely none as they decided to call them that and in their country, that is absolutely their perogative.
But if in the UK, I have 3 issues with calling it that.
1. It's an unnecessary
"Americanism."
We invented railways, and so certainly here, they were called Railway Stations almost from day one, so I maintain, over here at least, that should continue.
We have a truck for lorry. Movie/ Film. WC/ Washroom/ Bathroom etc etc
Enough!!
They can call it a pink banana for all I care, but in the UK, railway station should continue to be used.
2. Americanism laziness.
Railway. Two syllables.
Train. One.
Laziness should not rule, especially when formed by yet another "Americanism ".
3. Grammatical correctness.
The definition of a "station" is "an access point."
You access a train through a door, therefore a 'train station' is actually only a door.
You access the railway first at the building, which is therefore the railway station, which is the subject of the definition.
You go to a building first. Not the door of the actual train first.
As you access the railway first via the building, only then do you get to access the actual train, through the aforementioned door. So if you are defining the building you go to to get to where the train are, you are going to the railway station.
Pedantic, possibly. But equally, grammatically correct.
I hope that puts some context into the reasoning.
Cheers.
