Our Talking Scarlet Macaw Parrot, Spinnaker, talking to Rolo & Chihuahuas being Chihuahuas

  • Spinnaker, our Scarlet Macaw, is developing a pretty good vocabulary. It is not always what we want to hear, but Spinnaker is very independent and vocal. The dogs don't know they are dogs. We think Wrenches must have had her vocal cords removed, but she still tries. She and Socket were rescued from the Humane Society. Their lives used to be much different...

    We once had a scarlet macaw.... I loved her. Her name was Lucy and I would stand by cage and talk to her for hours. She had a song that we would sing to her and she would sing it and dance. Then one day we came home and she was gone. We checked the cameras and someone had stolen her. It’s been almost 11 years now. I’m surprised I still remember her. I was around 3 btw.

      sooo sorry to hear that. however, times have changed and there is hope for the jerky bird thief being caught. get your pet chipped. macaws need vet care and for sure they will need nail clipping, likely wing clipping and for sure beak trimming since bites are unavoidable. if birdie goes missing, you can put out an APB with the birdie vets in your local who will be glad to read the chips of all scarlets they get in and report the jerk to police. so sorry you lost your birdie. so heart breaking!

    • @chesapeakesynchronicity1294
      @chesapeakesynchronicity1294  Před 8 lety +2

      Living with a bird is like having a five year old kid for 75 years. If that sounds scary, don't get one, it would not be fair to the bird. They require A LOT of attention and cleaning up after, but they are very rewarding to own when they show their love and appreciation. They also require sacrifices and allowances in the owner's life. For example, Spinnaker has her/his (we've never had the bird sexed) own room with a huge cage and spends most waking hours on a perch in our living room. Also, we had to buy an RV to travel anywhere. You can't go in a hotel room with 3 Chihuahuas and a scarlet macaw, and if you try sneaking them in, you can't leave the room or they all cry like they've been stabbed. So, bottom line, if you want to live in a bird's world, get one, but don't make the decision lightly.

      ExplorerUnion Scarlets are great for talking and playing. They are very smart and love attention. If you are thinking of getting one, remember that they need attention and caring every day just like a dog. Also be sure you are ready for a lifetime of caring for one, because they live a LONG time, like 75-100 years!

      be prepared for the poop and sqwaking!! we have a male scarlet macaw (his name is rio) and he shoots his poop out 8 has cage and squaks everyday with at least 3 tantrums a week (by tantrums I mean won't stop awaking for at least 30 seconds)
      parrots are great pets but are very loud messy and expensive. we personally spend about $200 a month on Rio, depending what he needs.
      be prepared and do your research!!!
      we didn't do that much research on rip before we got him, and if we did he would have been a better bird (as we got him very young) and acted better.

      If this would be your first bird, or even if you have a small bird I would highly not suggest getting a macaw. ESPECIALLY a scarlet. Scarlett can be amazing but they are one of the nippier kinds.
      But if you've never owned a parrot, or if you have a cockatiel or a parakeet only, I would urge you to reconsider. I have a greenwing and they are great! But such a handful.

      @chesapeakesynchronicity1294  Před 10 lety +1

      Hi- We got Spinnaker when he/she (we don't know which) was about 6 months old. He/she was hand-raised by a bird breeder in Florida. We got her in a crate from the airport. That was 6-7 years ago. He/she is the most gentle bird we've seen, due to the hand-raising and the fact that we treat him/her as a member of the family, keeping the perch in the living room with us and taking the bird with us a lot when we go sailing. You can't own a bird and treat it like a fish in an aquarium. It requires A LOT of personal interaction to have the bird respond comfortably. If you have the time and heart to dedicate to owning a bird and realize that it is a lifetime commitment (they live 75-100 years), then get a young one from a reputable breeder with references. They are wonderful companions and you can have a long, fun relationship with one. Just remember that is what it is to the bird, a relationship, because once a bird bonds to you, then you are it's family and it will rely on you to keep it safe and happy for the rest of it's life, which may be longer than your life. Good luck!

      @lemonypeasy315 Před 6 lety

      John will Baldonado you want to own a macaw for its beautiful color?! What the heck their lifespan is long AF and they basically need to have a lot of money spent on them every single month if I was a person wanting one of these birds for its beautiful color I wouldn't buy one

    • @jmdenison
      @jmdenison Před 5 lety

      @@lemonypeasy315 bird food is cheap. large parrots (macaws, african greys, cockatoos) eat a diet of 60% pellets, 30% fresh veggies chopped and 10% seeds nuts and treats. our local bird vet charges only $20 to trim beaks, wings and nails and a check up. a chip is $20 more. the real commitment is time and talking to the bird all the time. when the door bell or cell phone rings your bird can say hi or hello repeatedly and also bug you while you are on the phone. a breeder will tell you when baby bird is ready to go home. I do not advise getting your baby before then, but visit the breeder every day. A newborn parrot is like a newborn human and has to eat every 2 hours a special diet. they do not go home until they no longer need a heat lamp and their body temp stabilizes. you will need an expert to guide you yes, it is possible, but are you willing to feed and check on your baby's warmth every 2 hours around the clock for 2 to 5 months or even more?
