Is organic farming responsible for Sri Lanka's economic crisis?

  • Sri Lanka is going through its worst economic crisis. There are protests, and cabinet resignations, the President himself is desperately trying to hold on to power. This mayhem that the country is going through has been squarely blamed on the shift to organic farming. But is this the case? Or did the economy collapse because of a series of blunders that have been going on for years with the shift to organic being the last nail in the proverbial coffin?
In 2016, A movement comprising academics and civil society began to grow with a demand for going back to organic farming. This movement was called Viyath maga, which among other things pushed for a change in the way agriculture was practised on this island. Sensing an opportunity, Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa made organic farming a poll promise as part of his 2019 election campaign. And on April 29, 2021, he kept his poll promise by ordering the country’s 2 million farmers to go organic, overnight. But, Why did Rajapaksa decide to go organic? It was not that he believed that organic farming could feed Sri Lanka’s population. But because he wanted to save foreign exchange bills on imported fertilisers. Sri Lanka imports all its fertiliser from mainly China and India. At that time, the total cost of fertiliser imports and subsidies was also close to $500 million. This may not look like a huge amount, but according to the world bank, Sri Lanka’s foreign reserves stood at around $5.7 billion in 2020. This meant Sri Lanka was spending roughly 10% of its reserves on importing fertilizer. Then, in 2020, Covid-19 happened! The bill was already straining the country’s reserves, but the pandemic almost emptied it out. Tourism contributed close to $478 million in 2018 which fell to $50 million in 2020. Similarly Sri Lankan economy is dependent on the export of items such as tea, rubber, coconut, spices and garments which contribute close to a quarter of its GDP. Since 2012, there has been a slowdown in exports of these goods. Sri Lanka is also saddled with a mammoth external debt of nearly $45 billion. According to Sajith Premadasa, the leader of Sri Lanka’s opposition, close to $8 billion of this debt is from China. A lot of this debt was for projects that could have been money-spinners for the country, but many of them became non-starters. Like the Hambanthota port, for which Sri Lanka took $1.2 billion from China. But Sri Lanka could not run the port and repay its loan to China. It renegotiated the loan and handed the port to China on a lease for 99 years. Today, Sri Lanka’s foreign reserves stand at only $2 billion.
Sri Lanka’s economic crisis was not a result of organic farming, but poor economic policies. When the Rajapaksha announced the shift to organic, less than 3% of Sri Lanka’s farmland was farmed without chemicals. The country needed time to change and adjust to the Organic way of farming, They also needed support and good organic substitutes to smooth the transition. Bhutan for example announced in 2008 that it will become fully organic by 2020. Bhutan is yet to achieve that target. As for Sri Lanka, the impact of a series of poor economic policies, sheer shortsightedness and a heavy reliance on foreign funds will hurt the 20.1 million Sri Lankan population for years to come.

They should have staggered the transition. Cutting down the subsidy for chemical counterparts and diverting it to domestic organic fertilizer and pest control productiin and organic agriculture and a proper organic certification process would have eased the shift. If you are going to stop importing, then you have to make sure that the domestic production has scaled up enough bridge that demand. It's really a shame because SriLanka's climate is very suitable for production of organic fertilizers because most of them needs fermenting or composting. The natural rebuilding of soil could also happen quickly there because of ideal conditions for soil microbe development.
It almost seems like the decision to just abruptly stop chemical pesticides and fertilizers were done with absolutely zero background research into organic farming. Atleast consulting with some academics would have given a better idea about the challenges

Thanks to *Down* *To* *Earth* for this video on this topic. I thought of making a video to present my opinions on this topic because everyone started blaming SriLanka and its president for shifting to organic/natural farming overnight. My opinion on this is...it's going to be a bit long.
*First:* As rightly mentioned in this video at 6:29 that "shifting to organic/natural farming is not the cause but their economic policies."
*Two:* Shifting to organic/natural farming will never create problems in food supply. There can be deficit in production but that will never create hunger or total destruction on the food supply chain. The main reason for their hunger in SriLanka is because they sold every single crop production to China. If they don't sell them for cheap, SriLanka knows better that China is going to torture them because they gave loan to SriLanka. This is what happens if any country thinks that China is their friend and it is helping them. But the reality will always be different with China throughout history yet some countries embrace China.
*Three:* Shifting overnight to organic/natural farming won't create hunger because, as per my knowledge there is no barren land in SriLanka where no single plant grows. The total land of SriLanka is fully fertile land just like Bhaarath has where we can grow any crop. There is abundant rainfall as well. So, what I am trying to say is, even if they don't use any chemicals, crops still grow.
*Four:* You might ask me what about the nourishment of soil which must have lost its 'Ph value' due to excessive use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. We can use Sunn hemp plants and natural dhaincha plants to fix the soil. Both these plants are way better than chemicals which increase the strength in the soil naturally. Also all kinds of legume plants will also help. Also If they can follow Sri Subhash Palekar Ji's methods, they can cultivate with less expenses and they can even control all pests with Sri Subhash Palekar Ji's methods.
So, overall shifting to organic/natural is not at all the reason for the present crisis in SriLanka. Maybe chemical companies are lobbying to spread negativity about organic/natural farming because they lose their business in a single day if other countries do the same. The people who think that shifting to organic/natural farming overnight is a bad decision, they must also think about their health and future consequences because of chemical farming. We are seeing many critical illnesses in the past 2-3 decades, especially cancer, once a rare disease became a common disease just because of Chemical farming and unnatural food products. The only option humankind has is to go natural/organic farming 100% . Get rid of chemicals. Doing so, will not only improve Humans health but also soil's health, nature's health and good toxic free ground water.

Biggest Increase in yields hasn't come from fertilizer or pesticides it has come from selection. To be more specific from dwarf varities and intensive cultivation.
Organic crops haven't gone through that cycle also you cannot just use normal varieties as they are more susceptible to lack of fertilizer and weeds and pests. Genetic structure of any plant is limited either it can be used for resistance or it can be used for high yields. Cannot do both.
So yes shifting abruptly to organic will result in drop in yields.
However just organic isn't the only thing that went wrong with srilanka. They are atleast 10 more things that went wrong. Let me try and list them.
      1. High external loans
      2. Too much investment in long gestation infrastructure projects.
      3. Banning Palm oil and GM crops etc. Why it's the cheapest oil they replaced it almost 25% more expensive alternatives.
      4. COVID lockdowns (mismanaged)
      5. COVID induced Tourism slump
      6. COVID induced drop in Remittances.
      7. Tax breaks for populism
      8. Global reversal in commodities cycle (on average 40% increase)
      9. Global shortage of shipping capacity resulting is 4 times increase in cargo freight.
      10. Ukraine war induced crude price jump.
      11. Finally rise in intrest rate globally making capital short.
In summary multiple things went wrong in Srilanka. Thus shift to organic is not the reason for thier situation but it is a reason.
Lastly can somehow get Organic crops which are high yield.
      Answer is Yes.
      Either wait another 25-30 years.
Or Be open to GM crops( Monitor it strictly).
My background is economics and agriculture and currently I am commodities trader.
Yes I am a vulture. (As per some people)

People think that every soil are able to grown stuff... guess what it is not. Look at the netherlands for example, very very poor soil that only grass can grow. what do you do? you starve? no, you transform the grass into milk with cows and/or you use fertilizers. later on, you became one of the most productive country, export cheese like it is nothing and provide other country that don't have the chance to grow stuff.

Speaking as a farmer the definition of Organic farming does not necessarily equate to no fertilizer. Some of the most important gains in farm production come from balancing bacteria and fungi populations in live soil. In practice some of the worst soil health is found on well intentioned organic farms who till in cover crops. On the other hand good soil health is successfully gained by no till cover crop practices that would not qualify for organic certification on the world market. Beginning a farm transition to live soil that needs LESS fertilizer is an economic challenge on the magnitude of one years inputs. Ie: if I want to change from traditional petro chemical farming to live soil and my traditional farming cost 100,000 on 90 acres of corn. I will need the input 100,000 plus another 100,000 for equipment and marketing changes. Then depending on markets there will probably be a yield/profit loss in the first three years of transition. So the transition cost not only 100,000 but also two or three years profit which in my example is another thirty or forty K over three years. If I was forced to implement this in a time of struggle my farm and all the commodities it produced would be bankrupt and unproductive. The world needs to figure out this transition. Also. In our area no financing is available due to low initial profitability. Certainly the consumer base willing to pay for live soil farming is elusive and requires a whole new marketing plan. Siri Lanka should not have made such far reaching decisions without significant input from farmers. It was very bad for the soil health movement because it was planned to fail. Now my investors look at this and say look what happens with your hippie ideas! Anyone want to put up 200,000 so I can transition our entire farm to living soil. Returns should come in year four at a rate of five percent to the investors with a ten year amortization on the loan.

The drop in agricultural production without chemical fertilizers is completely predictable. The economic crisis is predictable in that a government which is capable of banning agricultural chemicals is also incapable of managing a free-market economy. The nonsense about 'going-back' to organic agriculture ignores the facts laid out in any serious textbook on fertilizers and crop yields. Running a farm in the countryside is a world apart from growing a nice organic garden in the suburbs , especially if you want your people to have food in the marketplace.

Nonsense. It doesn't matter if transition was done poorly or "smoothly". The move away from synthetic fertilizers is a 30-50 % reduction in output. With 30% of the population employed in farming this indicates that many farms are very small and inefficient. For comparison the number of Europeans employed in farming in the UK is 1%.
Kilocaloric per capita output had been steadily going up to match that of the west. This top-down enforced starvation was never market driven like it is in Europe where consumers choose ecological goods or not. Instead it was a way for the leaders to showcase themselves in the ESG world with starvation, death, and revolution as the consequence.
If the state is so good at these things why are farms not government owned? Why is transportation of food not government owned? Why are supermarkets not government owned? The answer is simple: Government leaders recognize at some level that top-down policies can never adjust to changes the way individuals can and that people get really really upset angry when your policies cause their children to starve.

Sorry this is wrong conclusion. Yes Srilankan economy didn't go down only because of Organic switch but it was definitely one of the main contributors to it tanking.
    Following decisions went wrong
    1. Excess loans at high rates(Chinese loans are just 1 part of the overall problem)
    2. Massive infrastructure spending without clear revenue model. Not everyone is China.
    3. Sudden shift to organic not just within Srilanka but also steps like banning Palm oil imports. All this did is increase the import bill on Imported food, more expensive oil.
    4. Big reduction in taxes.
    5. COVID and mismanaged stringent lockdowns.
    6. Significant fall in tourism
    7. Huge drop in Remittances.
    They have dropped to 1/4.
    8. Global upturn in commodities and Energy prices
None of this in itself would have caused the meltdown but all of it together has sunk the Srilankan economy.
    Answer is simple,
    1. Renegotiate the loans, get a holiday period.
    2. Stop all Infrastructure spending
    3. Increase taxes step by step.
    4. Stop doing lockdowns
    5. Don't panic and pray.

Very easy to blame organic fertilizer. This is a stupid idea. Or a clever idea to look for blames to hang for Sri Lanka's total economic collapse. It is not use of organic farming that caused agricultural collapse. The gross economic mismanagement by the Rajapaksha regime is to blame. Covid pandemic, drop in tourism and sharp drop in exports are only factors. It is the total dependence on China that has caused this Crisis. Sri Lanka has no way out unless it throws off the Chinese economic slave yoke that is strangling its neck.

Industrial farming and artificial intelligence is the reason.
Humans began using industrial farming and artificial intelligence for food production and their populations expanded in adaptation to this system of food production, which produces massive quantities of nutritionally inferior, highly calorific foods. They had now become dependent on this industrial food production system, since this large a population cannot be supported by organic farming.
Then, when they tried to revert back to organic farming, food quantity decreased (with food quality increasing dramatically), and there was insufficient food to support this massive, unsustainably large human population.
