  • Welcome to this first video in a series painting Young Miniatures 1/10th scale resin WW1 German Stormtrooper (YH1857). Inspired by the somewhat recent All Quiet On The Western Front film, I set about finishing this “How To” guide for you.
    It is in a 5-step format, designed for beginners and covers the following processes.
    Chapter Markers
    00:28 - Intro and tools
    00:29 - Step #1 Clean up using mini tools and saws
    01:55 - Step #2 Prime and fill
    02:42 - Step #3 Frame and fill out the eyes with colour
    08:02 - Step #4 Face tones - base, shadow, mid and highlights
    15:29 - Step #5 Hair and hair shadow (plus final highlights)
    19:29 - Teaser shots and outro
    Each step is shown and reveals how I prep then start with the eyes, and go on to paint the face in simple steps using Andrea Color’s excellent range of acrylic paints, including their Face Painting set ACS-01. These paints were generously supplied by Andrea Miniatures for testing - www.andrea-world.com. You can also get them in the UK via Historex Agents, who have also supported the channel and are a great source of modelling goodies. I got this bust from them www.historexagents.com.
    This tutorial from www.scalewarmachines.com is aimed at AFV model makers looking to paint realistic faces for their figures. It is not a masterclass, rather a simple technique for effective results. It should be accessible and simple to follow. If you want to watch a long-winded masterclass from a maestro, check out one of the expert figure painter channels on You Tube instead.
    But if this is your thing, make yourself a brew, sit back and enjoy.

    This is the first painted model face I've ever seen that actually looks like a human, and not some weird looking mask with over exaggerated shadows and highlights. Bravo!

    There's this special thing that happens where somewhere in the painting progress the face changes from 'just' a model to a person with warmth and liveliness in his face. It's fun to watch!

    How on earth do you get to blend acrylics! I've tried doing it on 1/35 armour with mud effect but it just drys too quickly so I've switched to oils.
    Top job BTW.

    Hands down the best video I have seen on how to do faces. I am excited to try this on my 1/35 scale figures. Question, does this face kit come with instructions and hits?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  Před rokem

      Hi thanks - no instructions with the resin kit. The Andrea face painting set (and all sets) have step-by-step instructions.

    Wow, amazing work!! Just one question. The way you blend with that flat brush... is it wet? Thanks in advance!!

  • @BearGrisham
    @BearGrisham Před rokem

    Awesome! When you’re feathering with the flat brush is the brush damp?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  Před rokem +1

      Dry is fine. Maybe a bit humid would be ok too. Personally, I use it dry.

    Awesome brush work, is your eyesight good? or do you use a magnifier? I see the vid is 20 minutes long but how long did it take you to get to this point? Thanks

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  Před rokem

      Eyesight is going - will need reading glasses soon and then maybe magnifiers. What you see is pretty much step-by-step but with parts sped up 5x and a few edits, but 100 minutes is about right for these steps.

    Brilliant work, when you blend is it with a dry brush or is it slightly damp with a thinner?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  Před 6 měsíci +1

      No dry, you’re sort of polishing the paint so it feathers and blends and in the process you’re drying the paint.

    Is the plastic bubble tray made for paint or from some sort of packaging?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  Před rokem +1

      It’s packaging, but perfect for this task. A friend gave me loads, I think it’s from contact lenses.

  • @darrenanderson7969

    I may have missed it, but do you water down your paints or go in neat?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  Před rokem +2

      Sometimes, but not much with the Andreas. They are thin enough to use neat. I checked my raw footage today and I used a steel palette with virtually no water and no wet palette.

    Hi my friend you are always used Acrylics????
    Thanks for the video...🙏

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  Před 10 měsíci

      For most things and figures yes. Oils and enamels occasionally for weathering effects. Not really for figures or faces.

  • @bobsmytheable
    @bobsmytheable Před rokem

    I was just going to say the same. 1990 semi final 😢 Thanks for the vid, great painting. Do you think starting with a white primer helps get skin correct?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  Před rokem

      Well it helps with all paints: with coverage, finish, ease of working, I don’t think white really helps skin tones, sometimes I use black and don’t really detect any difference in the final effect.
