  • The Harley-Davidson Sportster S is probably the best model in the lineup that can entice a new generation of riders to buy a American cruiser, but is it any good? With a modern engine, modern features, but with retro styling, is it worth its price tag? Find out what Jinno thinks about this bike on this episode of Beyond the Ride.

    To solve the overall rider position / comfort issues you mentioned in your video about the Sportster S, I wish to share my experience as my wife and I have both a Sportster S with completely different setups. For the position it really depends on your height and preferences.
    To small (like my wife) you are bending too much forward and your feet are to far away. So for her I installed the mid controls, the sundowner seat and a handlebar riser. I correctly adjusted the suspensions and now everything’s fine. For me different story, I’m taller and I wanted to keep the forward controls as the riding position was perfectly fine for me. However as with the feet upfront, the tight suspensions are not ideal and you might have back problems after a long ride. So I installed a handlebar riser to have a slightly more upright position too, also changed the seat for the sundowner and moreover I replaced the suspensions with the Wilbers Nivomat kit (killer). This is the perfect combination in my opinion. The bike is now confortable, still sporty but also cruiser friendly (I’m not sponsored).

      @zanderkay6632 Před rokem +1

      @@rangered2010 Yes. The suspension kit comes with the rear shock and new front springs. The rear shock has bit or more travel up to 3,15 inches (80mm) and adjust automatically. So no need for preload, bump or release tweaking. This makes the ride really comfy. I would describe it like a modern BMW. Lots of people would say it’s sporty and stiff but not uncomfortable in any way. I’m really happy with it.

    I am in my late 50's and have owned countless bikes over the years. Currently, Royal Enfield has my attention and my two most recent purchases have been a 2022 Interceptor and a 2022 Classic 350. My loss of interest in HD started while I was in my mid 40's as the bikes became clownish, overdone, too much engine and way too much money for what one gets in an HD. So, to answer your questions early in your video... yes HD is losing a lot of older buyers and I really do not foresee younger/newer riders flooding HD stores to buy their new crop of offerings. HD needs to walk a few blocks from their Milwaukee HQ to RE's USA HQ and take notes... that is if they truly want to once again offer products that appeal to a wider range of buyers. HD seems lost with no focus. If I wanted to purchase a modern, liquid cooled bike with some heritage, I would buy a Triumph over any HD... but, for me at the moment, RE continues to catch my attention with each new product release. HD makes me yawn and walk on past...

      Tbh i just started riding like almost 3 years ago, i started with xg750 and i added a Suzuki 750 to my collection but tbh i love the looks of the new bikes that HD has come with like the fat bob 114, the fxdr, the classic hated vrod and now i love the Sporter s, i just love these bikes but their price point is what turns a lot of ppl away compared to what you get from them. If they were to somehow lower their prices a lot of the new gen would probably be in their showrooms but they have prioritize their pockets.

      @@TheGlp007 not gonna BS... my Classic 350 is, by a wide margin, the most fun I've had on two wheels... RE figured out the secret sauce. It is an emotional and tranquil experience with each ride. It just feels so right.

    • @tinman3586
      @tinman3586 Před rokem +8

      Royal Enfield is great if you live in a third world country and preformance is largely irrelevant. In the US preformance and style are #1 because two wheeled vehicles are largely toys and not a primary means of transportation. Royal Enfields look okay, are cost effective, but they have pitiful preformance. Comparing Harley-Davidson to Royal Enfield is like comparing Ferrari to Fiat.

    • @tinman3586
      @tinman3586 Před rokem +3

      @@chrro466 For the record I went with an Indian Scout Rogue so I'm not a Harley lover but Royal Enfield doesn't do well in US because even though their bikes are cheap, they lack preformance. Honda does well because they have a good balance between price and preformance. Their styling is a bit bland but the other two factors make up for that.

  • @brianbraden2697

    Ordered $20 USD heat shielding and lined the inside of the stock exhaust heat shield. 10 minute job, heat problem solved. Adjust the suspension, shock and rebound to manufacturer weight recommendations (10 more minutes), and the ride comfort improves dramatically. There is a $30 back rim plastic extension that keeps your back dry, too, without messing with the bike's lines...15 min mod. So, for about $50 USD and about an hour of work, you've solved both comfort, splash and heat issues. My only gripe I've had with the bike since I bought it a year ago is the display software is buggy.

    • @Chaals
      @Chaals Před 7 měsíci

      Sorry for necro'ing this comment but when you did adjustments, did you play with the tire pressures at all? I saw a video on increasing the tire pressure on an Indian Scout Bobber to help with the comfort, was wondering if that would help this bike as well

  • @pinoyphd

    Pumunta ako sa isang HD casa dito sa US and don’t get me wrong, their bikes are iconic. Pero ang problema sa HD is, even with the available tech ngayon, HD refuses to adapt to today’s standards. Big engines pero kulang naman ang hatak. Barebones features, ride quality is ehh. To each their own, but it’s a tough sell to the current generation like me. Saakin lang, I think the Iron 883 is more than enough when considering price to performance!

    • @nashd1821
      @nashd1821 Před 9 měsíci +2

      iirc, HD already tried to adapt to newer tech before with its V-Rod most HD riders hated it saying its not a harley, they also tried appealing to new riders with its street 500 & 750 also didn't go well same with street rod 750 most (not all) HD riders prefer the Vtwins with push rods

    Well done, informative and interesting, thank you. I pick up my S in two days, I'm a kid at Christmas. You're right about the forward controls, they fit on a Harley cruiser but this is not a cruiser, it is a sports bike and demands mid controls. I'm 5'10 and I'm changing to mid controls immediately, the rear stop light is going away, I'm going to find a strobe stop light that will fit under the extended tail section which happens when you get the passenger pillion and a better breathing exhaust is mandatory. Got to figure out the rear turn signals from the aftermarket. The PanAmerica gets 150 hp and I'm going to see if that's possible to make happen for the S. When I'm done I foresee $6000 plus in upgrades. Thanks for the excellent review. Peace.

    I have an S and love it. HD had to do something to survive, given the bikes Triumph and Indian were producing. The new engine is incredible. You can stay in the past and remain loyal to push rods, but you were paying tomorrow's prices for yesterday's technology. I think the S is a necessary and successful bike.

  • @MrEiniweini
    @MrEiniweini Před rokem

    I have owned it for 10 months and got it during a heatwave that lasted the entire 1st month (35-40 degrees C). Never had an issue with exhaust heat as long as you keep your right foot on the peg. If I flat foot at a red light it will heat my inner thigh, I learned that on day one. The rider triangle can be fixed for under $50 USD with a bar riser that brings you 40mm up and 25mm back. At a minimum I would recommend the sundowner seat option because the rear suspension can be hard on the lower back as you can't lever your weight off the seat with the forward pegs. Lastly, get the windscreen to take the wind off your chest [EDIT: The HD smoke screen actually adds to the look of the bike, it barely rises above the back of the gauge]. No showroom bike is ever 100% perfect but the great thing about this is that you can change the comfort for under $700 USD.

      But its american so we couldnt expect less from size. Honestly im kinda excited, im 6ft2 so if ever id be on this beast i think i would fit quite nicely. God willing haha
