- The DC-10-15 variant was designed for use at hot high-altitude airports. The series 15 was basically a -10 fitted with higher-thrust GE CF6-50C2F (derated DC-10-30 engines) powerplants. Built for only Mexican carriers Aeroméxico and Mexicana. Only seven were built between 1979 and 1982. N10045 / 980 (cn 48259/357) "Maya".

My favorite airliner of all time, flew with Mexicana's DC-10s a few times... that engine roar was unmistakable. Beautiful bird.
Engines were about 47,000 pounds trust. A mix of DC-10 light body and DC-32 heavy engines. So that pala es were too powerful, a lot.

Here a quote from the description: "The series 15 was basically a -10 fitted with higher-thrust GE CF6-50C2F (derated DC-10-30 engines) powerplants. Built for only Mexican carriers Aeroméxico and Mexicana. Only seven were built".
I couldn't agree more, love that growl!!
When I was a mechanic at Delta we nicknamed them Disel 10's. Great airplane!
Mexicana.👏👍
Loved it! Douglas DC 10.
Such an iconic jumbo jet of the late 20th century, likely the most iconic trijet of all time next to it's big brother the MD-11.
that’s such a stunning take off👍🏼
Beautiful engines sounds
You are right Mr. Ryan Bomar.
Since Mexico City is known for its high altitude, the engines had to work well on harsh conditions.
I had a nice chat with former AMX pilot and he told me about the B777's jet engines were from General Electric which is designed for high altitude airports just like you said with DC10s.
Legendary DC 10 flew from LAX TO GDL very long time ago, exelent service good food and beautiful stewardesses.
Maravilloso avión, de una maravillosa aerolínea. La primera, siempre será la primera!
I LOVE the sound of those GE high bypass engines ! ! That's MUSIC ! ! !
Mexicana was and still is my favorite airline of all time. Who knows, I might have been in that airplane when this was filmed. I used to fly back and forth on those and the 727s in the 80s. Miss them dearly. Thanks for posting!
Beautiful them are rock solid
I love the sound of those engines @ rotation!!!
HOW WONDERFULL LOOKS THE DC-10
QUE MARAVILLOSO SE VE PINTADO ESE DC-10
@XXXGhostGrenadeXXX Actually JAL had DC-10-40s (PW engines) JAL made a few aftermarket changes. They had what they refered to as DC-10-40D and -40i. The -40D had the twin main centerline gear removed, as this aircraft was intended to fly domestic routes, so it didn't need to lug around all that extra weight when it wasn't going to ever be fully fueled. The 40i retained all the gear and flew long range.
Classy airplane, classy airline. Miss em both
I LOVE THE DC-10 :)
I love the sound of the DC-10
@Alex Wirz DC10: In a class by itself Alex.
I flew on this aircraft from LAX to Puerto Vallarta and back. Had excellent service. Sad that MEXICANA is now defunct.
They’re coming back
Mexicana is making they're way back again ❤
beauty what a nice shot even though it got shat on back in the day i loved the 10
HERMOSO Y GRAN AVIÓN, GRAN COMPAÑIA.... GRACIAS POR COMPARTIRLO Y HACERME RECORDAR AQUELLOS TIEMPOS EN QUE MEXICANA ERA GRANDE ENTRE LAS GRANDES!
Hermoso!!!
Wonderful footage!! What a piece of airplane that was
Ahhh the memories!!! I remember spending some "quality time" playing on the front galley elevator or flying in the cockpit jumpseat when I was a kid!!!
4 of 7 the dc10-15's built ended up flying out of MSP, DTW and MKE daily (1999-2001) with Sun Country Airlines. Tail #'s N151SY, N152SY, N153SY and N154SY until they were sold and scrapped in Smyrna TN.
Really nice paint job, and what a great sound. Thanks!
very good video that dc-10 in Mexico is amazing congratulations
Yes. Great sound of the GE CF-6 engines!
Beautiful!
Que hermoso avion
What a beauty! I love all tri-jets, but have a soft spot for the 1011.
You know, I used to hate tri jets as a stupid 10 year old kid in the early 80's. But flying in it in 85 to 1990 on Mexicana and Aeromexico I was impressed. So I grew to like them. I never got to fly on the L-1011. I honestly never liked the s tail engine design of it. I admit, its a silly superficial reason.
I have a soft spot seeing the dc10 torn up for scrap, good riddance to the flying death tube
awsome, I didn't know there was so much good quality airliner video from that era, thanks for posting, this
Fun times at LAX,,, when I worked for Mexicana airlines and mighty Dc-10-15,,, “El Tecolote flight”. Last flight of the night at LAX.
I flew on this one in 1990, LAX to Mexico City.
Beautiful DC-10 in Mexicana livery!
RIP the second oldest (100 years), behind Avianca!
Mexicana co owned by PAA & crewmembers shared same flt uniforms.
My old man flew for Mexicana back in the 40’s, the Ford Tri-motor, DC-2’s & DC-3’s as Capt., no LAX at the time but Van Nuys . I’ve got the WAC charts 1:1,000,000 (405) charts marked early to late 40’s given to him by Mexicana Flight dispatchers!
SALUDOS A TODOS SI MAL NO RECUERDO YO VOLE EN ESE AVION EN 1992 DE LA CIUDAD DE MEXICO A MEXICALI ERA DE LO MAS HERMOSO, COMODO UN SERVICIO IMPRESIONANTE (NO CACAHUATES NI MINI BOLSITA DE PAPAS) 3 DE LAS MEJORES HORAS QUE PODIA DISFRUTAR DE UN AVION.
Beautiful
Almost all except the prototype DC-10-15s remain. There were only 7 built. The first one is preserved as a trainer registered J2-KCG.
Beautiful..I flew on a Mexicana 727 to Cancun via Mexico City...great trip, great airline.
Beautiful airliner. Back in the day, I worked at the United wide-body flight kitchen at O'Hare and we would clean the trays from the Mexicana wide-body flights. It was bad because the carts had usually been sitting there for some time.
bg147 then u remember the dc10 from may of 79..... Chicago here
I worked at an airport that had one of those "flight kitchens". every time I walked thru it the whole place smelled like a dumpster.
@@EnergeticWaves Yikes, That isn't a good sign. Our place was spotless and they fed us the 1st class meals at "lunch" at 2 am.
@@brianglade848 I was in the kitchen in the summer of 1984. That crash was a big one.
@@bg147 yes, I remember seeing the smoke from the sky that day
Had the chance to fly on one of these bad boys out of MEX to LAX many years ago. Shortly after we took off we had to turn around due to a bomb threat. Damn that was fun!!
Such a beautiful sound
Ryan - your videos are awesome, seriously!!!
The CF6-50 and TF39 have a ghostly sound. And as u know I love such engines.
I remember when these birds were seen often at LAX.
Great video and killer engine noise! I must say though by the looks of it compared to today’s aircraft you’d have to really convince me that those were a comfortable ride
Buenos recuerdos cuando surcaba los cielos
The trend "death chamber" of this plane is just horrible.. This is a really nice aircraft.
I love hearing those engines!
great video
¡Inconfundible el sonido!...
The Mexican carriers needed the improvements for the hotter climate and the high altitude airports.
I remember these. Like the landing 727 Clipper.
Woow!!!
Speechless
@NIGHTWHMAN and @Starboard76, that's "Clipper Glad Tidings" that you see at 2:56 on my Pan Am Tribute video when it's taxiing back to the gate after this arrival.
cool video
Los años maravillosos .......
@ten8goa Well, I think it would be a great idea if you check how many disasters had American Airlines vs Mexicana, there you will find an answer!
EXTRAÑAMOS ESTA AERONAVE MAS POR LA VIASA QUE TAMBIEN LLEGÓ A MI ECUADOR HASTA 1994
I also remember that Aeromexico the 80's decade acquired the DC-8 60 airplanes with the same engines of the B-707 300 installed (Pratt & Whitney JT-3D). Awesome sound. Unfortunately i was a kid and i hadn't money for to buy a cam recorder. I love to record aircrafts with my generics cams.
I flew on MX's DC 10 - 15s They were fairly new, and had more power. The pilots would often rev up the engines while the breaks were applied, then bolt like a rocket. Fun times.
Now that's a jet
Saludos.
@exceljet, I will continue to go through the collection and search for that.
My first fly was in this airplane Cancún - México DF unforgetable the power of the monster flying like a bird
The DC-10-15 was a DC-10-10 with DC-10-30 Engine's. Only Mexicana and Aeromexico operated the DC-10-15. The more powerful -30 Engine's were required because of Mexico City's high attitude.
The 15s were built for only mexicana and aeromexico. True power houses made for high altitudes and high temperature take offs!
No wonder ,,,,,every night they were overweight,,,other pilots would look at the Mexicana pilots and would say “those guys have big cojones,,,”. Now I know why….sincerely
I flew in this aircraft this DC10 from Mexico City to Miami.
Love this bird.
Wow.
Great video! It seems like LAX has some great spots to film from. Unfortunately, I live in the Northeast so it would be very difficult for me to get there.
Niklas Enblom It HAD some great spots to film. Nowadays you can't film anywhere near these areas without a quick visit from the police. Heck you can't even physically get to most of these areas anymore. You're pretty much limited to the In-N-Out on Sepulveda or the hill on Imperial. Those areas are nowhere near as good.
Nice video. Great audio of those growling engines. I presume planes are retired or scrapped?
RIP, DC-10s, including 15 and 30 series.
I got to fly on one of these.
Mexicana and Aeromexico were the first airlines who used the DC-10-15.
I wondered back in the day why neither airline ever flew the 747. Knowing that the -15 was optimized for high altitude takeoffs explains it, as Mexico city is 7000 ft high. Flew several times on Aeromexico DC-10's. but never had a chance to fly on a Mexican DC-10. I seem to recall the Mexicana's 727's were also a special version optimized for high altitude.
Like the ONLY ones mentioned here captain obvious.
Frank K the DC-10-15 actually were equipped with the GE CF6-50 rather than the CF6-6 engine. In other words equipped with DC10-30 engines not the the less powerful DC10-10 engines. The DC10-15 is actually a DC10-10 with DC10-30 engines.
