I (Cpt. Arlyn P, Aleshire) was the Facility Manager at Dolan Barracks, Schwaebisch Hall from 1971-72, attended the Engineer Career Course in 73 and then returned as the FM at Dolan Barracks again from 1973-1976. A plaque was mounted at the front gate in my honor which states "ALESHIRE GATE - IN HONOR OF CPT. ARLYN P. ALESHIRE, FACILITY MANAGER 1971-1976. I am returning to Germany next month when I will be honored again to be recognized as part of the Dolan barracks history in their Flugplatzmuseum. I had a wonderful time during this assignment and remember the outings we used to have with the local dignitaries and the Bundeswehr,

Anybody remember the 1/68 Sergeant Missie Battalion. Was part of HHB as motor pool sergeant from Aug 66 to March 68. Beautiful area and friendly people.

Was assigned there in 1972-1975 when the 4th Avn became the 180th Avn. I was NCOIC of the avionics shop and was there and knew the soldier who painted the "Big Windy" on the hanger doors. Still have both unit crest and company patches. Everything you and your family needed was available. All the facilities just to name a few; commissary, exchange, library, movie theater (Thomas), clubs (Double Decker), medical were great. The AYA did wonders for families with many activities One of the few places that had an out door swimming pool. We lived off post at first until housing became available and was able to walk to work. We even one year sponsored a mini European fair on a weekend held in the enclosed hanger. We moved all our aircraft out and washed down the floor. Vendors from all over sold products of their countries to us. We went shopping for two days and never left the post. Everyone who served there remembers German American Week. Our group commander's wife was very involved with the spouses of all soldiers stationed at Dolan Barracks. She kept tabs on every newborn and presented the child with a silver spoon with the babies name engraved on it. Got involved in radio control flying and helped form a club with the Germans using the south 40 on Sundays. Our company commander booked a lot of places for us to visit with our families in country and outside West Germany. Can remember like it was yesterday while standing in formation in 1975 that South Vietnam had fallen. Many of us were "Nam" vets and that news didn't go over well with us. Can also remember when we got our first female chopper mechanic. She earned and had our respect for holding her own. She could carry that tool box with the best of them. Remember "York Range" where we qualified with our M16's. I reenlisted there at my shop before completion of my tour of duty. A lot of very fond memories and good friends. I retired in 1987 and lived in Virginia Beach, Va. You can contact me at jim.lewis3@yahoo.com
