When the amphibious Duplex Drive (DD) Sherman tanks of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (QMO) touched down on the sand of Sword Beach as the vanguard of the D-Day invasion, ahead of the infantry and Commandos, it was the culmination of an evolution spanning several years. Switching roles from a mounted regiment in India, into a mechanised, armoured cavalry regiment, they fought in France in 1940, then faced an uncertain future, after evacuating through Dunkirk.
However, the 13th/18th would subsequently be selected to spearhead the assault on Sword Beach in new, top secret amphibious tanks. Having successfully secured the beach on D-Day, the Regiment became heavily engaged in the battle for Normandy, earning themselves an excellent reputation with the infantry brigades which they supported, before pushing north into the Fatherland. Their casualties from D-Day onwards amounted to 142 Hussars lost, 236 wounded, with many gallantry awards received.
Andrew May was born in Reading, Berkshire, where he lives today with his wife Fiona and two sons, Adam and Glenn. Throughout a career in the technology industry, Andrew has maintained an enthusiastic interest in military history, researching his Great Grandfather’s experiences in the First World War and subsequent death at The Somme, and both his Grandfather’s and Great Uncle’s service in North Africa, Sicily and Italy during the Second World War. It was perhaps inevitable that the compelling story of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (QMO) would captivate him to such an extent that it resulted in the creation of this book.

My old Regiment, 13/18H. A group of us went over to Normandy in May to celebrate the 80th anniversary. A new plaque for the regiment was unveiled and we had a ceremony at Mont Picon where the regiment were heavily involved.
Andrew May attended and was happy to sign copies of his book for us.
Proud to say Andy is a good friend of mine.
Good on you buddy, inspirational and has motivated me to write a book about my Great Grandfather's regiment, the Royal Engineers.
Great presentation by Andrew, a very interesting subject, with the added story of his family members. Many thanks Andrew and Woody, great WW2TV brings all subjects to its viewers, with experienced historians, new historians starting out, also female historians also new female historians starting out also. Watching this now on a rerun.
A great talk, thanks, gents. I was lucky enough to be at the D-Day story on the day that Andy gave his book talk there. I missed the talk but bought the book and Andy was good enough to sign it for me and to give me a quick whiz through his slides.
Fantastic presentation. The Lilywhites, a Regiment I served alongside in Herford, Germany.
What a great video. Love the enthusiasm of Andrewr and the story at the end, wonderful.
What an inspirational presentation. I had to wipe my eyes at the bit about Jutta Oppermann writing a letter in tribute to Doug Kay, who was obviously a good bloke who cared about people. I am inspired by the success of Andrew's book as I am now writing the story of my own grandfather and his ship during WW2. I hope it will be as good a book as this one. Awesome job Mr. May in the way you honor your great uncle, his mates, and a superb unit of the Royal Army.
Excellent, be picking up the book myself
My old regiment, well done Andrew really enjoyed this and thank you for putting the effort in.
Wonderful insight into the Decision Makers/Leaders Interactions
Woody/Andrew. Wow. What a great presentation! Regimental history, tank history, personal accounts, Brad Pitt and Bruce Crompton. Interesting from beginning to end! Woody, Bruce would be great guest talking about militaria??? Cheers gents. Bob
Absolutely fantastic presentation with very moving personal stories of the crews involved. Thank you both very much for a great and informative show.
Many thanks Steve
That was a good one. thank you andrew may and WW2TV.
Fantastic show as always
It would be great if a film director somewhere ,could do a Brit savin private Ryan..??
The picture of the Sherman DD with its skirt 4+ ft above the water goes a long way toward the notion of US DDs carrying overload ammo on D-Day. Did you guest happen to know how the one in the photo was loaded?
I don't, but it was in training, so one imagines the tank wasn't fully loaded with ammo.
The Scottish man you were trying not to listen to was my father
I'm so disappointed that I forgot to name Joe Collins - my apologies!
good subject but presentation sucks
Why? What was wrong with it?
