Struggling with understanding Layer Mixer Nodes in Davinci?
WATCH this and you will GET IT - and be able to use it straight away.
The Layer Mixer is a very powerful tool, but my guess is that I'm not the only one who has been having a hard time figuring out how it works and how to use it correctly in my colorgrades.
So to help others - Quickly & Easily - understand the way the Layer Mixer works I made this tutorial where I use 3 different techniques to qualify skin and brightness in the video.
Take a look and I hope you will enjoy it!

Great overview of Layers and now I understand why I couldn't see the impact from changes in the top node (there was an empty node on the bottom which was blocking it)
Exactly. That also tripped me out in the beginning. Thanks for watching.
Finally a simple and understandable video on Layer nodes and I appreciate your work.
Excellent, I'm a Latino subscriber of yours, I don't speak English, I use a translator but you explain it very well graphically, congratulations on your channel!!! 👍👍
Gracias por tus amables palabras
That chroma light preset is more than powerful. Awesome tutorial thank you!
You're welcome!
WoW a Color Tutorial that was absolutely fabulous . Walk off home run in presentation.
Thank you
Hey Tony - I usually tell people to look at the layer mixer like you would look at an animation cells - at the simplest form, if you were creating a cartoon, you would paint ( or draw) the background. Then you would draw just the characters you want to animate on a clear cell and lay it on top. So with your demonstration here the background is the top layer and the clear ( see through ) is the cell with the skin isolated. In photoshop the layers are doing the same thing except they are not visuals, but still stack on top or each other like pieces of paper. But in almost any 3D or composite software - the visual is back to front. So if you visualize the layer nodes as you would in 3D, the one on top is furthest away and the layers underneath are actually in front of the background.
When you get that visualization, there is no confusion.
Anyway, I like how you explained the various ways of keying the skin tones. Good job.
Thank you very much, Jim.
And I appreciate your analogy that is a very helpful way of visualising how the Layer Mixer works in DV.
Thank you! Can't wait to try this technique!
Very nice explanation Tony. You have a gift! Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much for the kind words Norman 👋
Very easy and practical video on layer mixer, now my understanding is much better. Subsribed 👍
Thank you and glad to hear it helped you.
Holy crap... I appreciate this so much. Thank you.
Glad you liked it.
awesome! clear and Easy!
Glad you liked it.
Good explanation, thanks!
Glad you found it useful.
You are very good man! Didnt expect this. Only suggestion is to use a highlight effect for the mouse area so that we cann zoom n see where u r working.
Thank you. I used to have that, but I will think about the moving forward.
Nice explanation. Would you have an introduction video to what each kind of Node is used for and its different purposes depending on shot?
Which monitors do you use in your setup? :)
I have a 6K Apple XDR for my UI, an Eizo HD monitor for scopes and my grading monitor is a BenQ PV3200PT calibrated with X-Rite.
@@Resolve_This very cool! 💰 thank you for the info
You can do the exact same thing much more simple with just a qualifier and an outside node. No need for any mixer in these exaples.
You could do that. In Resolve there's often multiple ways of achieving the same thing.
But this tutorial was about exlaining how the ‘Layer Mixer’ works. Unlike serial nodes, all nodes in the mixer receives the same RGB signal from the previous node, which will often help you get a cleaner or better grade.
Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Happy grading.
Sorry, my intention was not to be rude. I just wanted to point out that you don't need Layer Mixers to do these corrections. I alway search for the simplest solution for a task. But Layer Mixers are very useful in many scenarios. Keep up the good work with the tutorials!
I totally agree. Understand your tools and choose the simplest path.@@finnproductions4546
I'm sorry, but I didn't like this lesson. this is more of a color correction lesson, you made minor changes in the nodes and it was not entirely clear how they work. i think it was necessary to make maximum changes in color to understand how the nodes work, you did minor changes to make the picture beautiful, this is more a lesson on color correction, not about the properties of the nodes. But I still liked it anyway.
Fair point. I’ll take that into consideration going forward.
I do not agree, an excellent lesson in the style of this channel, we learn a lot with this type of tutorial, we must appreciate what they teach us and even more so if it is free!!!
@@maurogutierrez I agree with you. But this lesson is more about color correction than about the work of Node. It seems to me that it was not necessary to engage in color so carefully, it is more important to show how the nodes work and interact with each other. The author began a story about Noda, but a lesson in color correction was obtained. But as I understand it, just on my monitor small changes in color were almost invisible. It seems to me to show the work of the Node it was necessary to show extreme values in color and how nodes affect one another, this is a lesson about nodes, and not about a beautiful picture.
Very good info. Going forward it would really be helpful to beginners if you specify where you are making each adjustment. At first we were doing very good at pointing out where each judgment was but toward the end, you made some subtle adjustments like bringing down the exposure on the skin, I could not follow where exactly you made that adjustment.
@@jeffellis6544 Thanks for the heads up.
It wasn’t crucial for the topic here, but I can see it can be annoying not knowing, so I will definitely pay more attention to that moving forward.
In this case I used the Gamma to bring the exposure of the skin down.
