  • Faye Bate recently made a video discussing her thoughts on leaving medicine. Although I am not too familiar with the UK medical education system, it seems like there is a lot of overlap between the issues that medical students face in the UK and the issues they face in the US. In her video, she touches on issues of physician compensation, work-life balance, and sunk cost fallacy -- all of which factored into my decision to leave plastic surgery residency. As someone who left medicine to pursue entrepreneurship, here are my thoughts and reactions to Faye Bate's "Dropping Out of Medical School + Defending My Decision."

I started Medical School about 3 weeks ago. It is absolutely insane. I am in classes for at least 8 hours a day, then spend roughly 2-3 hours beyond that in after hours anatomy lab, and another 2 hours minimum studying and keeping up with lecture material. I'm managing to squeeze 8 hours of sleep a night, but that's literally it. My schedule is school and sleep, with MAYBE one hour to prepare meals and travel to classes.
I hope this is just how it is at the beginning for Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology courses, but I am really struggling to keep up.

I was in a similar position and it does get better. I find that I have become more efficient in studying and planning out my day. I get about 3 hours of free time a night and a bit more on the weekends (for cooking, cleaning, meal prep, and video games, reading, and a bit of hanging out with friends). I do get closer to 7-7.5 hours of sleep (30 mins for a morning workout).
Point is hang on! It does get more doable. My upperclassmen seem to have more free time than I do (despite being M2's!!). Don't underestimate how amazing we are and how skilled we become as we go tru med school.
      Good luck!

@@crimansizers5840 I really appreciate your reply because it gives me a chance to update a bit for any premed who may be freaked out by my comment. 2 months later and things are already going much better.
Like you mentioned, I've gotten much more efficient with my study habits. In person classes and labs have dropped off a bit and we have more time to ourselves to schedule as we please. Generally, I just have adapted, the courseload is still the same, but it just gets... more manageable as you learn and adapt.
My upper classmen say the same things, and I'm already drooling over the time that my MS3 counterparts have on some of their rotations.
      Thank you for your encouragement!

In Nigeria just like the UK, after your medical training, you aren't a fully certified doctor. Earning your MBBS doesn't guarantee you working as a doctor. The route is secondary school (high school), medical school (earning MBBS and a provisional license) then housemanship/internship (after this, you are given the actual medical license).
Anyway, this is in reference to her having to wait an extra year after medical school.

In the UK there are several competitive entry points/bottlenecks on the route to becoming a consultant (attending). Foundation training --> Core training --> specialist training --> consultant. At all these points you can get moved anywhere in the country, you do get to rank them though. Often you have to cover multiple hospitals over sometimes quite a large geographical area resulting in dangerous and long commutes.
It takes around 10-12 years post med school to become a consultant however many people take years out of training to locum/ travel as training is tough.

    Trigger warning: self-harm, suicide
I honestly get so happy when I hear med students or graduates take the leap and quit. The flak we get for changing careers is just insane. Why is it encouraged for other careers (esp during the big resignation), but not us? Personally, I quit for self-preservation. I was 100% sure I will harm myself in one way or another if I forced myself to stay, and that thought scared me so much. It was becoming more and more a reality when some of my colleagues had also attempted suicide. (I haven’t finished the video yet so I might edit this comment.)
EDIT: Re: an experience you can’t speak about - God, I literally had to sign an NDA before I could enter a pre-residency program. I have so much tea but can’t talk about it!!! All I can say is the culture and politics is so horrible, and I think that’s something people do have to know before entering med school.
EDIT 2: Lmfao that clickbait, I hate this hahaha

April 💜 I hope you're in a good place now. How incredible that you're sharing this! I know others will appreciate your candor and vulnerability. I, too, feared that medical school & residency would affect my mental health--especially the lack of sleep, which I've found seriously affects my mood and thought processes. I chose to become an NP instead and support a team of wonderful physicians. Perhaps I would have survived (thrived?) in medical school but I'm just not sure. I hate that so many doctors-in-training are treated so abysmally 😞 Our health care workers deserve better.

I didn't used to understand this. As a pre-med I was definitely a more "work hard, never complain, if people complain they're just contributing to a negative atmosphere and procrastinating by complaining." But then I started med school and realized how serious the pressures really can be. It was actually a series of attendings I followed who talked about the malignant culture and opened my eyes.
Then one of my classmates fell victim during STEP studying. I wish right now I were reading a comment from them like what you posted here, instead of knowing that they are gone. I am glad that you were able to discern that the path you were on was not right for you instead of forcing yourself into something harmful for fear of the stigma of quitting. It takes A LOT of strength to walk away. I hope you are supported and getting the help that you deserve. Always know that you made an incredibly brave decision.

However, this video proves that someone Kevin trusts should watch the video & tell him whether it's worth making a reaction video.
This clickbait video was certainly not worth reacting to!
I realize that Kevin spent a lot of time setting up his camera & filming so he didn't want to toss his efforts into the trash (the sunk-cost fallacy that he mentioned!).
