Rivalry aside, Sheffield is the home of football. The steel city derby is the best and most historic derby in the world. Both clubs are steeped in history and hope to see both clubs in the top flight soon
Think what makes the Sheffield rivalry special is that neither Sheffield team can seem to dominate the city for too long....keeps going back and forth, back and forth. Wednesday edging almost every big club stat (so they are technically the bigger club) but it's remarkably close. Even the numbers of seasons each club has spent in each division is almost identical. Sheff Utd are currently top dogs in the city but Sheff Wed are waiting to reclaim the title. One thing I will say though....Sheff Utd must be the most long suffering fans in the UK. There's no other club in Europe with 26K to 30K every week that has never experienced a single cup final since the war or played a single match in Europe. That's true loyal support.

I love the Steel city derby as a Wednesday fan. It's not violent, it's not aggressive. It's just passion. You can hate each other for 90 minutes then go to the pub together after and laugh about the match. Truly the most underrated derby maybe in the world, but at least in England

Wednesday are historically the bigger club where as Sheff Utd are currently the bigger club averaging almost 29K this season in the Championship (and that's with a restricted capacity down to 30.3K for most of the season). This is a level of consistent support very few Wednesday fans have ever witnessed. The stats show Sheff Wed have bettered 29K on just ONE occasion in the last 50 odd years and outside the top flight the last time Sheff Wed managed more than 29K was in 1952, that's over 70 years ago.
Stats will also tell u in my lifetime since 85 United hav only averaged over 20k 16 times sheffield wednesday have averaged over 20k 33 times

Sheffield united where created by the same people who created Sheffield Wednesday.
The reasons for it where that the then Sheffield rules league was losing clubs to other leagues and they believed creating a rival club would bring in the crowds and some money, also might save the league.
Didn't work out like that, but the rivalry began, albeit not straight away as many fans within sheffield went and watched both teams in the early years.
Ex wednesday player Chris Woods as played in the Manchester derby and the Old firm derby and he said the Sheffield derby is the most Passionate for rivalry think thats due to not being in the same division very often and being 1 of the oldest !!

Let’s be totally honest Sheffield Wednesday have been so poor for last 24 Years with very high ticket prices but even tho Swfc have been very poor they have averaged almost 26k fans in league one but Sheffield United who Won league one they only averaged 20k fans with very cheap ticket prices compared to Sheffield Wednesday ticket prices what are so expensive ! When Swfc are doing well even in league one they will still average around 26k fans in league one but compared to SUFC who won league one only averaged 20k fans with very cheap tickets at SUFC!
Know what I Mean ?? People Hillsborough match day tickets are very expensive compared to SUFC tickets! If Sheffield Wednesday was in the premier league & had very cheap tickets like Sheffield United they would be almost 40k fans at Hillsborough every week

I don't know where you got your history of how both clubs came about but other than Wednesday starting from cricket club it's a million miles off. Wednesday cc played at bramhall ln football club did too, also Wednesday were originally nicknamed blades, because of rent Wednesday moved to olive grove and then chairman created another club to fill void at lane, Wednesday were then given land at owlerton moved stands from olive grove there and were nicknamed the owls.

This can be a bit misleading missing some key seasons out especially 2011-12 when them blunts where 5 points clear and had games in hand and then we played at Hillsborough beat them 1-0 and wednesday went 13 games unbeaten to go into the automatics and untied dropped into play offs loosing in the final. Iconic season.

I live in Sheffield and find the rivalry annoying. People genuinely believe the opposite supporters are somehow inferior. To take matters further, some people refuse to live in certain areas of the city of refuse to have red or blue colours in their life. Tribalism at its best.

We've never averaged 8k mate. Lowest it got on average in league one was 17k. At times in the 70's Wednesday were averaging 10k whilst United were averaging 24k. Stop talking rubbish

It's easy to tell the fans apart though. Our lot can write their names and occasionally have a wash - unlike our hard of thinking, unwashed neighbours in S6 😊

As a neutral, it is obvious that United are well on top at the minute but that pendulum will swing as it always does. Wednesday however have that manky old shed of a ground whereas it seems that United are planning on growing an already fantastic stadium.

Sheffield belongs to United, the city club. Most Wednesday fans come from the suburbs and Barnsley / Rotherham. Non Wednesday fans in South Yorkshire call them Pigs. Hillsborough was home to a piggery nearby and Wednesdayites on moving there celebrated goals by grunting like pigs.
Wednesday is more famous for it's scandals that its football. Their negligence during the Hillsborough disaster that cost 97 fans their lives. The Wednesday chairman Bert Magee demanded compensation, they shamefully refused to demolish Leppings Lane or build a monument at the ground for the victims.
Then there was the Peter Swan betting match fixing scandal, near insolvencies, Mandaric ripping off local businesses, Jack Charlton being attacked by his own fans away at Oldham where Wednesdayites rioted, the fatal stabbing of a Blade at the '93 semi final, attacking Crystal Palace fans during a post relegation pitch invasion, conning Sheffield Children's hospital out of money, being docked points for recent FFP breaches. I could go on and on with this list of shame.
It was only a few months ago that an article in a national newspaper described Wednesday with the headline thus: 'a weaselly club devoid of any humility'. Referencing Newcastle United fans experiences in the Leppings Lane end, and the apparent lack of any changes following the Swillsboro disaster.

You mention United becoming the third club in Sheffield after Wednesday and Sheffield FC. But there is another club in Sheffield (also an amateur club) which is older than Wednesday, and in fact is the second oldest football club in the world - and that is Hallam FC, who incidentally play at the oldest football ground in the world. Sheffield FC v Hallam FC is the oldest Sheffield derby match, some years before Wednesday were formed. And Wednesday might like to 'claim' they're the biggest club in the city (biggest bunch of arseholes maybe), but the records show that in head to head derby games United have won more. And that's been the case for at least the last two or three decades.

And unlike most big clubs Leeds don't have an inter city derby and all the clubs in the proximity either care more about each other or aren't really as relevant to us as much as Manchester United are given the history and local between the two clubs
