  • In today's episode of Video Game Lore, we'll be talking about what is perhaps the most dangerous thing you encounter in the world of Subnautica: the Kharaa Bacterium. I'll tell you everything we know about it, what symptoms it causes, how it affects the player and how it changed the entire ecosystem of Subnautica.

Actually there is one more interesting fact. It is confirmed by the developers, that the Kharaa bacteria in another game they made, Killer instinct. Is a mutated version of the Kharaa in Subnautica. This means that the two share a universe.

Same with Natural Selection 2 - It shares a universe with Subnautica. Natural Selection is also a game made by Unknown worlds and its implied that the aliens that you either fight or play as (depending on what team you're on) is a mutation of the kharaa bacteria infecting and basically possessing creatures, super evolving them etc.

I'm wondering if perhaps the enzyme has some strong antibacterial properties that the bacterium isn't resistant to, but if the Emperor produced a weaker version of the enzyme (enzymes are proteins, they're easily destroyed by heat, so perhaps her sickness gives her a fever and thus breaks down the enzyme faster) then maybe the prolonged exposure to that weaker enzyme COULD lead to some resistance. And in fact, it probably did, because it only slowed down the effects. That means it killed SOME of the bacterium on infected individuals, but not all. That means those who survived multiplied and created new colonies on the host, those new colonies now being a little more resistant than before.
Basically, the planet couldn't have survived without the babies producing the much stringer enzyme that totally wipes an individual clean. Without them, the bacterium probably would've been accidentally selectively bred for enzyme resistance

Also another i interesting fact about Kharaa from a gameplay perspective is you are always infected until you touch enzyme 42 even if you pause the game, teleport to the gun, pause the game again, wait for it to load and then try to deactivate the gun never touching water it will tell you that you are infected.
