I was a dental hygienist for 12 years and I have to say, way to go with the early flossing! As she gets older, she won't even question it, it will just be a normal part of her routine. That's awesome! Unfortunately, a lot of kids don't even have the brushing part down, which (obviously) leads to tons of problems.
I'm 18 and try to get into a toothbrushing routine because my parents didn't care that much lmao
Arianna Revinae are you talking about flossing? Because I was told to start brushing as soon as their teeth come through.
If you put a rubber band around the soap pump you’ll get a kid sized amount dispensed. It shortens the pump depressor
I used that trick in my classroom when I was still a teacher! It definitely works! I haven’t needed to use it at home yet though, because Kylie seems to be very conscientious of the amount of soap she is dispensing 😂🤷🏼♀️

Thanks for sharing, I like the stool idea for the toilet. Currently we use the potty chair, but I’ll consider for later. We are lucky to have bidet in our both bathrooms, so I converted one of them to my daughter’s station. It’s perfect height, she can open and close the tap, I put hangers for towels and toothbrushholder, soap, hairbrush and the sticky Ikea mirrors (2 squares) above. She just loves it, she can wash her own hands, watch every movement in the mirror, so great. She is 21 months old.
Our son is not a fan of water being dumped over his head either...and I tried to teach him how to keep his chin up so the water wouldn't go in his eyes. It didn't really click for him until I demonstrated hair washing and rinsing on his dad - and now it's no issue! He still doesn't want water in his eyes, but he will participate in hair washing/rinsing much more peacefully now! Also, he LOVES the shower, ever though water gets in his eyes the whole time, LOL - I think it's because the shower is more like a water park than the bath. Good luck!
I am definitely eager to see how you balance out safety concerns for Mia when she gets more mobile with allowing Kylie to maintain her independence.
If people are concerned about their children learning which knob is hot vs cold, marking the knobs with blue and red tape can be a good visual reminder [and can ease some anxiety].
In regards to Kylie not liking water being dumped on her head: What about using plastic watering cans or investing in extendable shower head? [You can keep the water pressure low so it's more of a "sprinkle" than a big gush of water]. I know that, as an adult, I'm not a huge fan of having a bucket of water dumped on my head, but the shower is a different experience. [Obviously, a watering can and/or a low pressure shower might not be as effective at rinsing off ALL of the shampoo, but it might help get her more used to having water on her head- plus both give her options to be more in control.]
Also, because I know that one of the things with Montessori is having "child-sized" items at times, a lot of travel toiletry departments have smaller loofahs [you can even buy a pack of 20 for $14 on Amazon]. Obviously, they're meant for travel so they take up less space in luggage, but they'd also be great for little hands and bodies.
Oh and PLEASE be careful with the Vaseline. While Vaseline in the nose OCCASIONALLY shouldn't be an issue, doing it regularly can potentially lead to some serious problems [the petroleum jelly, over time, can be inhaled bit by bit and end up in the lungs causing pneumonia. [Using the Vaseline sparingly and using coconut oil on other nights might be a good alternative.]

@@HapaFamily I saw it around a few places a while back (I had a lot of nosebleeds as a child and so did a kid I babysat years ago, so it's something I looked into a few times [I had an allergy to freshly cut grass as a child; I would get a nosebleed whenever they cut the grass in my neighborhood. To this day, I cannot STAND the smell of grass]).
Apparently, it doesn't break down in the nose so over time it may slowly collect in the lungs. It seems like it may be a scare tactic of sorts because it hasn't been conclusively proven or disproven (and the chances of something happening appear to be unlikely)- the issue seems to be with overuse (which is where adding coconut oil into the rotation may help).

I like functional! Thank you for showing us :) We had carpet in our bathroom in England. I enjoyed the change when I moved to Korea as there is a drain in bathroom the floor. Makes cleaning a lot easier! Love the set up you have and I bet Kylie enjoys using it ^^
They have this drains in Australia too! It's kind of neat, it's like the WHOLE bathroom is a bathtub lol

@@alexlg9521 In India to. We do not use a bath tub . We fill a tub with water and use a mug. Prevents water waste as it gives you limited water

New subbie! I wish I would have found you a few years ago! I love everything about Montessori life & I really want to start! I have an 11 yr old, 4 yr old & 2 1/2 yr old. How you have things set up seem to solve alot of the problems I'm having with organizing & keeping their rooms tidy. My youngest daughter is every independent so I believe this is going to really help us!

Hi! I love your videos, and will definitely be using all of your Montessori tips once I become a parent, myself🤗. I’m also an esthetician, and I just thought that I’d let you know that coconut oil isn’t the best product to use as a moisturizer for the skin (or for the hair, for that matter). It really just tends to clog the pores, and not provide enough benefits to make it worth using. Instead, I’d recommend using a gentle, very natural moisturizer/lotion, that’s been made for sensitive/baby skin (a fantastic option is Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics All-Sensitive Moisturizer (actually, you could use any Aveda skincare products on your little ones), which, despite being on the pricier-side, will last you a very long time). However, please use whatever products that you enjoy. I hope that this is helpful!

And yes my two year old loves playing in the sink and washing every towel I hang for her to dry her hands all of them end up In the sink with a deep wash lol! I think I should give her some washcloths and play with those outside and hang them to dry maybe that would help that phase like you said ! Totally love these videos!

My daughter does not like water over her head, but we changed the shower head so that it has a few gentle settings. She loves when water trickles from the shower head during her bath and it allows her to gradually adjust to rinsing under the shower head.

My daughter hates having water dumped on her head, too. I taught her to lie down in the tub and rinse it herself that way. And if you're worried about it being completely rinsed, just do that part before the body wash. She also uses fluoride free toothpaste, but it does have xylitol. It's bubblegum flavor, because she was not a fan of other toothpaste flavors!! I found it on Amazon 😸
Thanks! She’ll lay down on occasion, but sometimes she just doesn’t want to. Then we resort to the dumping again, lol.
For parents that prefer to not have a power cord where little fingers can get to them: it's not necessary to store an electric brush on the charger, and keeping it on the charger turned on all the time will actually reduce the battery life. So it's find to store it in a heavy based cup/container, or lay it horizontal. We have a tiny tiny bathroom with zero storage so I was worried we couldn't have a typical 'cutesy' Montessori separate toddler sized set up. The step stool makes waaay more sense for my bathroom. Thanks for the video ❤️
We used the Mayfair Next Step potty seat on all of our toilets. The child’ seat flips out of the way with a magnet on the lid. It so easy to clean.

We have 1 bathroom in our house I also have that step stool for the sink my baby is 11 months and enjoys climbing up the steps with my supervision of course and I’ll open up the water and we wash her hands. I also have her diaper genie in a corner and a rolling cart from ikea in another corner for her wipe warmer and cloth diapers it’s very crowded since it’s a small bathroom but it’s working for her right now

I love that double step stool, I have the small stool and feel like Ezra would benefit from this type. Thanks for the idea! Otherwise we pretty much have the same set up. Works great for us too :) Oh, a little hack I saw with the soap dispenser is to tie a rubber band around the top part of the pump so that it only pumps out half the amount each time :) Thank you for sharing, Ashley!
I used to use the rubber band hack in my classroom with the hand sanitizer or my 7th graders would practically bathe their arms in it 😂😂 lol

So good to see Tom's toothpaste for your little one. Our whole family uses flouride free. Most cities add flouride to our drinking water and some bottle water as well. Thank you for this. I am just starting and wanted to know on your first week how many life activities did you introduce to your daughter?
We started when she was 6 months, and at that age she was definitely much too young for practical life activities. So I don’t really know that I have a good answer to your question. I basically just introduced them along the way as she started showing interest in the various types of activities and seemed capable of doing them on her own, or at least parts of them in the beginning.

Even a simple stepstool that can be moved between the sink and the toilet can make a world of difference! Child sized (travel) shampoo bottle, a small brush for them to use… Any little tweaks you can make will help! 😊

Hi there! Love your videos! Any suggestions for how to modify this set up - my son's bathroom is also the only full bathroom on our main floor. My husband and guests mostly use the basement 3/4 bath, but the main floor bathroom is mine, my son's, and occasionally guests'... as he gains autonomy and we bring in stools, I worry about him getting into my toiletries. He's also a climber and interested in doors. I have to lock the lower cabinets for safety reasons, for instance. I just feel bad constantly redirecting him from things, but he is SO curious!
Did she go through the stage of putting her hands in the toilet? It seems like my niece and nephew are so bad about just touching the toilet
That never happened. I always just provided redirection to a more appropriate place for water play if I thought she was even considering it (eg the sink) and a brief explanation for why we don’t play in the toilet. 🤷🏼♀️

How did you train her to use toilet paper? We recently had to have a plumber unclog our pipes bc my daughter likes to flush massive amounts.
We are still teaching her to get the right amount, it’s been a work in progress! Lol
Alisha Berrey no idea how successful it is but I have seen people put a piece of colorful tape or sticker on the wall the length you want them to use.
I would just paint the yellow stool the color you want.

One Q's, at what age did Kylie start having bath on her own? ie washing herself. And how did u scaffold her learning washing get hands?
I always supervise her baths still, but she started showing an interest in washing her own hair and body just recently, which was when I introduced the little soap bottle.
As for washing her hands, I basically just taught her step by step and assisted or provided verbal guidance during each step as I saw necessary along the way... and I still help her on occasion, but she’s mostly self-sufficient with it now! :)
I've found hand washing the trickiest bcos the Montessori approach is to demo and then let them figure it out and be patient in the learning curve. But with washing hands, I'm not comfortable saying "oh, undont feel like right now? No worries. We'll try again tomorrow. I find myself enforcing it as a rule before eating and thus, find that I'm fighting with my daughter on this more than on anything else. At the same time, I don't want to seem okay with hand-wash before meals being optional. Any tips on how to tackle this?
@@anakapur6688 I agree that hand washing shouldn't be optional. I think I would likely try my best to take a respectful parenting approach on this, starting with giving her a flat choice: "Your hands need to be washed before we eat. Do you want to wash them, or would you like for me to help you?" If she still refuses either choice, then it must still be done anyway. In that case, you might say something like, "Yes, I hear that you don't want to wash your hands right now. And I'm going to help you..." and then go about washing her hands as gently but firmly as you can. If you notice as you're doing this that she seems to change her mind and makes a move toward some self-initiated participation, then take a step back and allow her to do as much as she is willing to do on her own. Baby steps! :)

Gemma doesn’t like water dumped on her either 🙈 she’s doing better but we’ve got a ways to go! And we had a problem with our ikea bench sliding on the tile with Gemma! But she can reach with a normal stool now. I’ll need a rug or something when we bring it back out for Evander 😬 but he likes to climb into the sink... so I’m not ready for that yet 😅😅

Hi Ashley love your videos, especially the Montessori at homes ones. Hopefully you have a Q&A video soon, I have so many questions! Basically I have a 14 month old who isn't what I would call a rough child, but sometimes he throws food and he tends to break cardboard books by bending and tearing them. He also pushes all of our furniture around. Did Kylie ever display this kind of behaviour and if she did, when will it end?! I want to introduce as much Montessori based living as possible but no idea when to introduce breakables! Thanks again for all that you share :)
Hi Luci! That all sounds like very normal behavior for a 14-month-old. I can’t say that Kylie ever did destructive things on a regular basis, but definitely every once in a while when she was younger. But I find that good modeling and consistency helped it to end as she got a little bit older (maybe around 18 months?). What do you do when he throws food or breaks books? I know that if I saw her doing something that I was not okay with, I would try to have a little phrases that we constantly repeated to her, such as “Books are for reading, not eating”, which of course were always said with a positive tone. And what’s interesting is that, now that she’s older, she’s heard it so many times that she starting to tell the baby the same things! 😂 As for throwing food, I would calmly and kindly tell him that throwing food means that he’s done with his meal and he must not be hungry anymore, and then matter of factor remove his plate and end the meal. Toddlers learn pretty quickly about cause-and-effect, so as soon as he realizes that throwing food will always result in his food being taken away, he might be more motivated to not do it anymore.

But I have a question, how do you handle your toddler when you're using a cellphone? You make vlogs and you certainly would carry the phone with your baby & toddler. Don't they come up for it as its hell of an attraction for them? My baby is 16 months old & she's battling me to get the phone as soon as she sees it.
I use it in front of her very rarely due to this reaction of hers but she's now growing more tantrums over it & I don't want to give in to them.
My son is a year and we have a very small bathroom that we all share. Will the stool and potty seat work for poetry training?

I have 1 question: I hate baths so I put just a shower in my bathroom (it's big, 188x77 cm, but still just a shower). My baby girl is 9 months now and I was wondering how can I make washing herself easier for her?
I was thinking about sending you pics of it to your e-mail and if you find a moment of free time, you can check it and (if you wanna) put it in one of your videos with some ideas so other parents with just a showers can see them too.. :)
I would do the same things as the bath (low-hanging fixture for hanging her loofah, small shampoo bottle, Ikea sells a great little suction cup caddy for the wall that you can put at her level)... just teach her how to wash her hair under the shower instead. 😊

How old was she when she was able to use the tooth brush and dispenser by herself? My son is 16 months old and I’m now teaching him how to wash his hands but each time we get to the sink he is distracted by all the other stuff up there (I only have
one bathroom) and he’s still unwilling to use a regular tooth brush, he likes the baby finger toothbrush.
I can’t remember exactly when, but I want to say it was sometime between 18 months and two years old. She still has minor struggle sometimes with the soap pump, especially with keeping it balanced while she’s pumping it, but for the most part she’s pretty good with it now. And I feel like once they hit two, they’re a little bit more able to focus.
I do not see the sink stool at Ikea! Did you get it in the store? I am not seeing it online?
Apparently they stopped selling it! 😞 You can find it on Amazon still, but it’s much more expensive.
What about assisting in gently dunking the child backwards into the bath water to rinse the hair? I remember doing that as a kid. I liked to run my hands thru my hair under the water thoroughly. It does defeat the purpose if it's a bubble bath, though lol

I've just rearranged my house to foster more independence on the part of my toddler. Just I do have a little question as to the dental health of toddlers. I noticed that you are already letting Kylie (forgive me if I mistyped the name...I learnt that from automatic subtitling...) use a powered toothbrush. Is it too early? I've been googling for the best time for a kid to use electric toothbrush but there are a variety of opinions there and make it a bit confusing. I'd really like to know your take on that. I know taking care of two little babies will keep you very busy, but if you have time, please leave a reply. Hope you'll see my comment. ☺
How old was your daughter before you gave her the Tom’s toothpaste? We aren’t sure when to start having our daughter use it, she’s 16 months

Once the teeth start touching, they should, yes. And her front ones all do.
Even if they don't need it already, getting in a habit as early as possible makes it much easier for you and the kids later on.
Hi there. New to your channel and subscribed after watching your positive discipline video. I wanted to ask which 2 books about parenting is the best to buy as i am on a budget and can't buy all the books you recommended.
If I had to choose just two, I would probably go with “how to raise an amazing child the Montessori way” by Tim Seldin, and “Positive Discipline: The First Three Years” by Jane Nelsen.

My child fights me to the death with brushing his teeth. He’s 2 years 4 months. He absolutely HATES it.
Don't worry. My teacher told me her duaghter who is almost 4 likes to brush but without paste she likes to take bath but without soap. You can give them a choice that wich toothbrush she wants from 2 toothbrushes. Ask her which toothpaste she wants out of 2 . Not more than that..
How did you choose the brush for her?
It’s just a mini wet brush, I got it because her hair started getting knots after a bath. :)
