  • This third generation MINI 3-Door Hatch has been usefully improved - though not beyond recognition. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.
Fresh technology, smarter connectivity, standard-fit front and rear LED lights across the range and an advanced dual-clutch automatic gearbox are amongst the highlight changes made to this revised MINI 3-Door Hatch model. If you liked it before, you'll really like it now.

The 1.5 three cylinder variant is a decent car, superb handling, comfortable ride, enough power for most people etc but I still prefer the 2 litre Cooper S. Yes it may have a hard ride round town, you feel every bump but you ignore that because its such a great car to drive and sounds fantastic in sport mode. Nothing else quite like it. I know because I got a Cooper S two weeks ago :)

@@kd35trey39 As an update, I ended up trading it in for a Subaru Outback. Life has not been easy the last year or two and considering the 1.5 Mini, ive tested a couple through work, I like the fact it has a twin scroll turbo so there is no hesitancy between gear shifts. Big engine for a three cylinder. Good prices as well.

I ordered my MINI f56 Cooper S in the late Autumn for a March 2020 delivery.
After the initial excitement, I was disappointed when I stopped thinking about it all the time, so I started watching review vids of each model and I now know I have made the right choice. The only choice I wasn’t certain on was the colour. Actually I was certain...in my mind, I was sure I was having a red one but then I saw one in Starlight blue on the forecourt and it looked lovely. So I was baffled... red or blue? The lady in sales came out with a pack of coloured plaques which my husband and I thumbed through until we ended up having rejected all of the colours except blue and red and so were still no better off. I spun myself around in my chair and all the time we had been sitting next to a black 3 door Cooper S which looked stunning. I turned back to my hubby and asked him, “Do you like this 1 in black?” He said yes and with that, the sales lady filled in the form! I had been undecided for ages only to be so impulsive.
Since then I have been buying a few interior accessories in black and white check.
It’s now 34 days until I can collect it. 😄 #SoExcited from Gena

It’s a lovely little car. Well, on account of the safety norms and all, it isn’t quite as ‘little’ though..more like a nice strongly built robust hot hatch...
Anyway all cars across the world have grown significantly in size and girth over these last 20 years...
At the 13.00 mark why did you say ‘ this R56’ when referring to this particular car that you are reviewing?
The R56 ( one of which I own out here in India) is the model produced between 2006-2013.
This generation of Mini that you are reviewing, as you said at the beginning of the video, is the F 56.
There is absolutely no doubt that the F56 is much quieter than the R56. With increasingly tightening noise pollution restrictions this was only to be expected.

Not offering Android auto has a "we don't care to pursue customers among the losers who don't have an iPhone" terribly arrogant and displeasing ring to it.
The same goes for going without driving assistance systems, chief among those auto-braking.
This said... the car is still very attractive, and if you purchase it without unneeded extras, the price isn't unreasonable for the overall quality.

Like most cars there ok till they go wrong. However. Working on a mini engine is a nightmare and will cost an arm and leg to fix. .

So basically, lets NOT buy ANY car in case it goes wrong. Pessimist.

Does Lewis Hamilton heel n toe any more in Formula1? I thought all Formula 1 race cars use paddle shifters now and there was no need for a clutch anymore. It's not like the old days when Juan Fangio had to take one hand off the steering wheel and shift into the next gear.

What a waste it is not electric. Why waste all the time and effort on ancient technology that we know costs 10x to maintain and run? Terribly anti-consumer and ignorant of demand.

Because EV’s don’t pop and crackle on the overrun. EV hot hatch? It doesn’t really work as a hot hatch.

As if electric cars are in high demand. They are just a fad and definitely not viable at the moment

Mining for lithium and disposing of batteries when they die is far worse. Get real.

MINI, bigger than an Allegro, weight of a Maxi. Fat, ugly and not worthy of the name.
Issigonis and Moulton are probably spinning in their graves...... or hooting with laughter at the utter nonsense of these cars and the fact that people buy them. They are so far removed from the ethos of the Mini, and there are smaller, cleverer cars which make the name a mockery.

I am torn between a Swift Sport and a Cooper.
Of course the Suzuki has a purer "soul", it doesn't come with the aggressive marketing aimed at too-pampered youths the Mini does, it's sold in a honest way (meaning you don't have to pay money to... get the right to choose, among else, what color you want it to be), and all.
But then... you feel the seats on your back and beneath your bottom; the pedals; the audio system, the climate control; the sound of doors opening and closing, the feel of levers and buttons on your hands, ... and it's just so much better, the Mini, that makes you torn between that purity and lightness, and this compromise, which still values driving pleasure to a decent degree - of course as long as you get one with the manual gearbox, which is still possible today for the Cooper and will soon no longer be I expect -.
So it's not easy when you think you are going to use the car for 150-200k miles... for how many of those will you really feel the need for the Suzuki's handling and bubbliness?... and if you add no extras whatever to the base car, the price is enough close to the Swift Sport's to make the decision difficult.
