R.I.P Liam Clancy, this song is probably my faveourite irish ballad ever il never forget you.....i sang this for my grandads funeral 2 weeks ago..it'l always remind me of him and you. is mise michaela ni charaigh, ta me 13 bliana daois, A liam ta bron orm, ta a ceoil tu an go deas,
I've been living in America for so long that my mind and my accent and most of my memories are American ... but nothing can take away my Irish heart. This brings it all back. Rest in Peace Liam Clancy, God bless Ireland.
Raibh riamh is féidir leat a bheith Liam, Bealtaine an Sun Shine i gcónaí ar duit agus an ghaoth a bheith taobh thiar duit. RIP. Were ever you may be Liam, May the Sun always shine upon you and the wind be behind you. RIP
It's amazing the talent Ireland has and had from Luke Kelly, Ronnie, Drew to the Clancy Brothers and so on. It makes you extremely proud to call yourself an Irish person.
Correct 100%...and belongs originally to that beautiful song Loch Lomond...This has been around for about 40 years but Loch Lomond goes back and back...Greetings from Ireland...M
_I have to stand corrected..On Googling I found out that the above could in fact be older than Loch Lomond...It was NOT written by Tommy Makem but handed down to him by his mother who obtained it from some elderly person unknown...Some folks say it was composed before Loch Lomond and the air was used for same...Anyhow I'm going to do a cover version...Watch out CZcams may be down for a few days...weeks_
I don't know how, but remember the lyrics to this. I literally have not heard this song in a decade in a half, but when he started up, I joined in. Then again, I grew up listening to these guys.
at 2:20 when he reaches out to the crowd, spontaneously.. reaching out to them.... not a note he was playing and yet that is what a true musician is... right from the heart...no thought needed, just heart.
I just knew Paddy and Tommy to talk to. However I knew Bobby very well, he spent a lot of time in the States and of course Tommy Makem was just up the Road in Dover, New Hampshire. Nice Rural area up there along with Lake Winnepausaukee. Nice Areas to go to get awy from it all for a while and recharge the batteries.
@buenavozalasdoce - There's something very romantic about the melody and the sadness of the song-- and of course Liam Clancy's soft voice and his gentle brogue.
maybe the perfect combination of beautiful song and beautiful singer, i cry every time, gee sometimes you think I am lucky to be alive, as mo croi Liam, go raibh maith agat
*_Irish & Scottish Songs cross over both in melody and lyrics but this is a relatively new composition (40 years or so old)..and the lyrics were written by Tommy Makem who borrowed/stole the melody from the beautiful Scottish Song Loch Lomond_*
I prefer this: "By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes, Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond. Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae, On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Refrain: Oh ye'll take the high road and I'll take the low road, And I'll be in Scotland afore ye; But me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond."
A beautiful and memorable rendition by Liam Clancy despite the accompaniment being a tad on the loud side. I know from experience how difficult it is to achieve the fine balance a song like this requires, especially in a live setting. However, even with the slight imperfection of the sound-mix, my eyes still mist over at the sentiment expressed by Liam's excellent performance.
Come over the hills, my bonnie Irish lass Come over the hills to your darling You choose the road, love, and I'll make the vow And I'll be your true love forever. Chorus Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows Fair is the lily of the valley Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne But my love is fairer than any. 'Twas down by Killarney's green woods that we strayed When the moon and the stars they were shining The moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair And she swore she'd be my love forever. Chorus It's not for the parting that my sister pains It's not for the grief of my mother 'Tis all for the loss of my bonny Irish lass That my heart is breaking forever.

There will never be another Presence or voice like Liam Clancy.
Same tune as Loch Lomond.Just beautiful.
Liam?.....nobody, ...nobody Liam, could sing a ballad like YOU.....glad you were around....and we'll NEVER forget you and God bless Ireland.
One of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard...
I've loved this music since I was 5 or 6 years old. Exposure: involuntary and relentless. Appreciation: unreasonably and irrationally heartfelt.
It's amazing the talent Ireland has and had from Luke Kelly, Ronnie, Drew to the Clancy Brothers and so on. It makes you extremely proud to call yourself an Irish person.

Absolutely but this was originally a Scottish melody
that wasnt here point
doesn't matter who wrote the song or where it originates from. I am talking about the amazing vocals from Mr. Liam Clancy.

Saw the Clancy Brothers in Chicago in 1968 just before the election. Wonderful experience.
The best voice of any male singer I've ever hear.
I seen Liam and Tommy singing in concert, in 1980s, a great night.
wonderful song.so touching. Ireland has my heart forever.
I don't know how, but remember the lyrics to this. I literally have not heard this song in a decade in a half, but when he started up, I joined in. Then again, I grew up listening to these guys.

Thats right it was adapted from Loch Lomond which is beautiful too
my heart is so lost with nothing to sing about, and i am lost in carrickfergus

Slaite kmnitz,.....and you would probably enjoy the renditions of Karie Oberg, Tommy Maken and The High Kings singing that wonderful song.
11 people have never smelled a red rose.
+Mark Flanigan Make that twelve.
Come over the hills, my bonnie Irish lass
Come over the hills to your darling
You choose the road, love, and I'll make the vow
And I'll be your true love forever.
Chorus
Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
Fair is the lily of the valley
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
But my love is fairer than any.
'Twas down by Killarney's green woods that we strayed
When the moon and the stars they were shining
The moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair
And she swore she'd be my love forever.
Chorus
It's not for the parting that my sister pains
It's not for the grief of my mother
'Tis all for the loss of my bonny Irish lass
That my heart is breaking forever.
Likes this.
Irish talent is wonderful but this is another Scottish song that crossed o'er!
