It's also really interesting the creators of encanto chose to give bruno and his powers the eerie green motif, it's a color very much associated with evildoing (maleficent, dr. Facilier(?), rasputin from anastasia, etc), but then have our expectations subverted by basically saying "Yeah no it's just a color lol bruno's not bad". Well played disney djdbbs

Honestly it makes me really happy to see the cosplays. I have brown skin, not too dark but not white passing either, it’s similar to Bruno’s since I’m pretty pale from not going out much. It’s always upsetting since most characters you see in media are either lighter or darker than you, you never have a character you can relate to cultural wise (I’m Mexican but I recognized many of the foods and clothing and such). And I’ve always been interested in cosplaying too but was always kind of hesitant since I’m not the “right” skin color. But I don’t feel this way about this movie. It helps me a lot.

On the topic of wondering why everyone dislike Bruno when it wasn't his fault- I think that's the point. People wanted to scapegoat and when they grew up hearing that he was the creepy guy that no one liked who caused the bad things to happen, you start to believe it. I think the whole thing was them misunderstanding him and fearing the thing they misunderstand.

I always thought that they didn’t like him because they couldn’t really take advantage of his power since he could SEE the future but not CONTROL it. I mean Luisa was overworked because they kept making her do everything they could, seriously the movie showed that they had her move a church a little in one direction, reroute a goddamn river, and when they were going to the party they didn’t even park their own donkies or put the ones that escaped back themselves. They just kept telling to do more and more and more while they can see she was already doing a lot. That was my first impression.

Honestly, I really hope this movie gets a Disney+ show because there's so much to explore. Character insecurities, rooms, those sort of things. I’m not a person that cries watching movies, never really have been. Didn’t even cry when Iron Man died even though I was really sad. However I cried so much while watching this movie it was unreal. The emotions that this movie goes into beyond the magic touched something inside I guess lol. Like how when Mira’s family takes a picture together after Antonio gets his gift and she’s left out I balled like a baby during that scene because that something that I can relate to, always the one either taking the pictures or left out of pictures with friends or family. Or when Mira find Bruno and realizes that he has been watching them eat together in the kitchen and has been watching them all grow up for years and they had no idea he was there. That part definitely broke me. Tbh I watched this movie because of the tiktok hype around the Bruno song, but holy shit I was so impressed and happily surprised by it

Mirabel: represents the people who feel like the outcasts of the family and the people who struggle to find their purpose in the world. Could also represent the people who are constantly on the search for acceptance from others.
Abuela: represents everyone who wants to protect their family, but has a hard time expressing her feelings to her family. Also the people who put strict circumstances onto others because they’re trying to protect them from something much greater than themselves.
Julieta: similar to abuela but more motherly and open, also constantly worries about her children ( could also represent people who get attached and constantly feel like they have to protect and be there for them) also feel like if there was more backstory, this could lead to julieta also representing the “therapist” friends/family members (hence the constant scenes of julieta and maribel talking to each other about Mirabel)
Isabela: represents the people who feel like they have to be perfect and can’t do anything for their own enjoyment or who have the pressure of marrying and having children (“he wants 5 babies”)
Luisa: represents the people that struggle with holding family burdens, also feel like this could potentially lead to the people who have a hard time being bigger in stature/struggle with body image (whether that’s big boned, or struggle with weight) and just want to love themselves.
Pepa: represents people who have a hard time controlling their emotions and if you notice multiple times in the movie, no one really tries to talk with her to calm her down, but instead tell her to get the clouds to leave or to get ahold of herself, which is a representation of situations where peoples emotions aren’t being considered or are being ignored.
Antonio: represents people who have a hard time communicating with others. There’s also a common theme of people who have a hard time communicating ( such as people with autism or other similar conditions) being drawn to having pets so he has animal friends and can talk with them. Could also be the reason why he only really connects with Mirabel
Camilo: represents people who have a hard time identifying with themselves or feel like they have to put on a different face around other people
Dolores: represents people who feel like they’re constantly out of reach of something that everyone else has and also has to keep secrets about everyone from everyone. Also could represent people who ave had trauma and are quiet about it, or people that are pressured into being quiet about things
Bruno: similar to Julieta theory of being the therapist but instead represents the people who give the right answers that people don’t want to hear and therefor are bullied into an outcast or are ridiculed because of it. Also could respresent the people who are just being themselves and are outcast for it.
These are all just from what I’ve seen in the movie and what other people have also said. Please feel free to tell me your theories on the characters as well😊😊

Here's the thing about Peppa: her power is to INFLUENCE WEATHER WITH HER MOOD not CONTROL IT. She has tried to CONTROL IT for her whole life because that's what Abuela told her she was supposed to do, resulting in stress and anxious thought and causing for instance the weather changes that she didn't want! We actually SAW the generational traumas in more than the two songs, or at least you can see it if you analyze it deeply. Bruno felt guilty for being the "unlucky prophet" who brought bad luck to others, Peppa was trying to control the weather by surpressing her own emotions, Camillo felt like he had to be funny imitating others, Luisa felt the pressure to always be strong and never let anything hurt her, Isabella was stricted in a perfect but more importantly FAKE version of herself to maintain a standard, Dolores always hears everything, even what she's not suppose to or things she can't understand and feels under pressure to not say the wrong thing in the wrong moment or to not reveal a secret unintentionally and, if it wasn't for Mirabel, Antonio would feel like he couldn't use his power to do nice little things like worming up seats for people (as Abuela says to him "I'm sure we'll find better ways to use your gift", and that's usually the first step to trauma, unrecognised kindness)... Maybe the only one who didn't suffer for something is Mirabel's Mother, because she's got the power to heal others through foods and never had to do anything different to accomplish Abuela's wishes, but I'm pretty sure she's got fear to not being able to cure someone and let them die...

She felt like it was her place to keep everything in place, to protect and preserve that little miracle she was given for her husband's sacrifice. Adding another layer to Pepa’s wedding story. From “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”:
Pepa: “Bruno walks in with a mischievous grin…”
    Felix: “Thunderrrr…”
This implies that Pepa was already agitated by Bruno’s entrance. In other words, Bruno (Pepa’s brother) stresses Pepa out or irritates her, even when he does nothing wrong. Very brother-sister. Bruno commented on the thunder, probably just trying to make conversation, not making a joke. Bruno takes the blame, Pepa later tells her family the story, and those from Pepa’s side of the family proceed to gossip about him behind his back in We Don’t Talk about Bruno.
In the song, when Felix pointed out the timing of the thunder, she retaliated because her intention was to make herself out as a victim. But, to be fair, her constantly frantic mental state is brought on by Abuela’s demands that she keep calm 24/7 - a pressure she’s lived with her whole life.

Its also a really common theme in stories with future-tellers for them to be blamed for their prophecies even though they didn’t cause it.

I don't think Dolores was actually creeper out by Bruno. She said she, "grew to live in fear of Bruno stumbling or stuttering," most likely meaning she was told to be wary of his predictions, because of what she says next, that the family was, "... grappling with prophesies they couldn't understand." This tells me she knew that Bruno's exile came from a misunderstanding of him and his abilities. Since she can still hear Bruno all the time in Casita's walls, she probably hears him, "muttering and mumbling," to himself about how he never wanted the things he saw to happen, or talking about how he misses being there with his family.

  • @nekoali2
    @nekoali2 Před 2 lety +101

Bruno getting the blame for his prophecies is really pretty typical for oracles. In just about any story you hear about people predicting the future it usually comes out two ways. Either they get blamed for it when the bad thing they warned about happened, or they are ignored and the bad thing they warned about happened because people didn't listen to them. So yeah, totally understandable and also totally unfair that Bruno got such a bad rap and felt like his gift was more of a curse. He would try to warn people about what he saw in their future, and all they did was get upset at him when it happened, as if he caused it. Bruno was the sweetest.
As far as Pepa's part of 'We Don't Talk About Bruno', I really think we're dealing with writer's bias here. Pepa is emotional as all heck, and is constantly trying to stop storms happening around her in the movie. Yet she wants us to believe that on her wedding day she was cool as a cucumber and there were no clouds until Bruno said something? I'm gonna disbelieve that one. She claims Bruno came in with a 'mischievous grin'... Doesn't really jive with how we actually see him. More likely he saw Pepa on the verge of freaking out and tried to calm her with an awkward joke, as he said. And then Pepa did what she always does and freaked out, causing a storm. Then blamed the whole thing on Bruno. Even though as they said, despite the storm they saw it as a joyous day.
And nobody in the family actually hated him. When they finally saw him again Everybody was overjoyed that he was back.

Did you know that at Pepa and Felix’s wedding day, it wasn’t actually Bruno who told her that it looked like rain. It was Hernando. So stop blaming Bruno
I know that it was Bruno this was meant to be a joke

Ok. Here’s a backstory for you guys. Pepa’s side of the family always wears yellow, and Mirabels mom’s side of the family (I forgot her moms name) always wear blue, Abuela wears pink and until Isabellas song Isabella wore pink too because she was under control of Abuela until she was freed by her song with mirabel then she wore blue because it matches her mom, dad, and sisters and she was no longer under control of Abuela.

    "what did bruno do?"
basically, everyone was simply scared of bruno, people didn't like the predictions he gave as a lot of the times the prediction would be negative. every time he has a prophecy people just assume the worst. he even says it himself "because I'm bruno and everyone just assumes the worst"

6:28 THIS! i was fully expecting mirabelle to talk to every family member and was shocked to see her not, the ending also felt.. wrong? like, disney cant just give us a village being kept together by a fading candle and a magic family but SOLVE THE CONFLICT WITH A CONVERSATION?! edit: just saw somebody say this should have a tangled-style tie in show, i think that would work PERECTLY for this movie.

I think Bruno is a rare person which is why it is confusing. I think his character is the honest person in the family. Not the mean blunt brutality honest person. Just the one that tells it how it is and no one wants to hear the truth. Most people think they want honesty but they don't so this person tends to get pushed out, not just in family but they have a hard time making friends too.

6:35 I brainstormed a couple ideas for possible themes from the other (magical) family members:
Pepa- The Isabella to the triplets; was expected to constantly be happy for the sake of others, only being allowed to express sadness when other's needed rain. The constant repression of emotions caused her to have terrible anxiety and explosive anger. Is low-key jealous of---while also holding extreme pitty for---Isabella because with Isabella's plant magic, Pepa's powers are "no longer needed ."
Julieta- Luisa of the triplets; Was at everyone's beck-and-call without a break. Rarely got a moment's break. Rarely left the kitchen as a teen/young adult because she was constantly cooking. May even low-key hate cooking now. Couldn't recount the number of times she had to eat her own cooking to fix the burns and cuts she received from rushing her cooking. Finally settled for making simple foods for others and only giving out the food on her time to save her sanity after Isabella was born.
Dolores- Doesn't get much sleep at night because there is CONSTANT NOISE. Is afraid she'll miss something important (i.e., a family member being in danger) because she can't hear anything over the rest of the noise. Her bedroom has fabric, pillow, mattresses, etc., on every surface to try and cancel out some of the sounds.
Camilo- Identity crisis. If he's expected to be everyone else, how can he be himself?... Does he even know who he is? Has a hard time looking at himself when he's not shapeshifted. Maybe even body dysmorphia.
Dolores and Camilo would also both low-key hate their rooms. Disney confirmed the bedrooms were designed to ENHANCE one's gift---i.e., Luisa's room, which was cut from the final film, was full of exercise equipment-- so Dolores's room would be designed to enhance her hearing (maybe like a radio show echo chamber?). Camilo's room would be full of mirrors.

I feel like if the "We don't talk about Bruno" song was them saying that they didn't like him for certain reasons, Isabella probably was upset that she had to live a perfect life and nothing could go wrong. But... idk It's just something I thought of.
