We got the Fire Department to replace the batteries in our smoke alarms, because we're all old and/or disabled, and short, and don't dare stand on the step-ladder. They kindly send a tall man, who could just stand there, reach up, and do it, without even a single step. They were so kind, and explained that they love this kind of job, because it helps prevent the heart-breaking calls. I can't argue with that logic.
Fire fighters are the sweetest. I'm a city accountant, so I'm privileged to know our fire chief pretty well. Super stand-up guy. Takes care of his men like his kids. Never met a fireman I didn't like. 😊

Hi real estate agent (almost) here. May I suggest putting a sign in the home stating "is the smoke alarm beeping? Lights burnt out? Call us we can change it for free." This placed in a very viewable yet eye catching area of the home, say on the wall next to the bathroom, this will instinctively adjust people's eyes to focus on the odd thing out. Especially if it's skewed.
They call 911 for shoving stuff up their bum instead of just getting a ride from a friend, driving themselves or just not shoving things up the exit only door 🤷🏼♂️
I’ve gotten a call at 1-2 in the morning for a cat stuck in a tree to get called again by the same kid with the same cat in the same tree the next night. Some of the calls you get are unbelievable but those are the ones that make the best stories.
I did home care thru college and then after graduation. This tiny old lady was lonely & mean as a snake. She would call 911. EMS shows up, she could've reach the peanut butter. She was hungry. She ended up not being mean, she was lonely & hated people leaving her. We worked out a "visitation " schedule. She died peacefully in her sleep at 101 yrs old. The 1st time her face was pinched up. EMS we a true GOD SEND ❤❤❤
It's kind of tough to address with how most of the country's built. People always talk about how great space is, but when you need to drive to see anyone more than a couple houses a way, and you're getting old and can't do it anymore, it's a tough spot to be in.

I’m my mom’s caregiver but I genuinely don’t know what she’d do without me and that’s scary.
I remember a wonderful show where the emts were called to help an old lady like this but they explained that a lot of older people are stuck at home. I'm trying to spread the acronym of IFHOP and get it on UrbanDictionary, but at least it's something I want to see on bumper stickers of most every driver in Florida, as well as maybe a cutesy "innocent" IHOP (with IHOP branding) bumper sticker on Ambulances, Cop Cars, and other Commercial Vehicles whether they work for the State or not.

I had to do this once to get lift assist for a critical patient. He was enormous and about to code. Multiple requests for the volunteer county department (all we had). Finally called dispatch and told them to say we had a fire, worked like a charm. Overall decent department, not sure what happened that evening.
Be kind to those types…. Usually has no visitors or even their own children coming by, or family. Elderly people get forgotten a lot. A lady used to live in our apt building and nobody came to check on her. End came cuz they noticed she didn’t call for a month after calling them almost every week for years… she died alone in that aptment a month before….😢
For real, the last time my elderly father had to be attended to by EMS, one of the guys who wasn’t immediately busy changed out a smoke detector for them. Not just a battery, the entire unit.
My friend worked EMS - Fire in a busy city & the city had to start charging for the house calls to get ppl to stop calling them when they were just lonely. EMS would get there & ppl would have cookies & tea set out. It became a problem bc it was taking them out of service too often when other ppl had serious health issues. Some on occasion would actually sit down on the floor & then call for a "bed assist" as if they'd fallen. It's sad how many lonely ppl are out there.

I'm totally saying this next time they come to the building, which is often..that or I'll say it as I'm opening the door for them as it is a locked building from the outside without a card and sometimes it doesn't work or they don't have a keycard.

I’m really glad you’re showing how lonely a lot of seniors are. We need better social systems because the “cracks” people get lost in are now chasms.

Fire is always the first at the scene. Any scene, fire, murder, car accident. You name it and fire is the first person there seconds after it happens.
