I found TFIOS the best book he's ever written so far because I could relate to it, given my family's history of cancer. I liked how different Hazel was. With that being said, his lead characters and the plot of his novels are super similar. They're usually mysterious, manic pixie reckless dream girls paired with an attractive nerdy guy who falls in love with them and chases after them.

Kelsey Matthews It's basically a simpler rip off of The Vampire Diaries. I loved Twilight when I was 10 or 11 and now I'm older I realise that I loved it because it took so many ideas from an intricate, thought out series and turned them into simple nonsense that younger readers could get their heads around.

I have to say that I really "hate" that disclaimer about "please don't take my opinion like an offense" on these kind of videos... Of course they're just your opinions! And of course nobody should take them like an offense... I mean... wtf? I actually LOVE the videos that talk negatively about books (or stuff in general) because that way you can see both sides and you can really make your own choice based on what you heard (so it's not all just HYPE HYPE HYPE, like usually is). If you only hear beautiful, lovely, positive reviews, you're not getting all the information and I think that's just fake. The booktubers that I like the least are the ones that only say good things about everything they talk about. Actually, one of my favorite videos to watch is the "unpopular opinions tag" because it allows you to see their honest opinion. Why isn't it always like that? That tag shouldn't even exist because everyone should be able to share their opinions without being scared of people getting mad at them. So what if you hate a book that I love? That's not an insult. That's why youtube is made for, so you can see all kinds of people with all kind of points of view and preferences.
So thank you for doing this video! And of course for being honest and saying the things that you don't like, like you normally do too, I don't comment this because of you, but because of the "need" of that disclaimer speech :) xx

Callie Altair Exactly the same as me! I loved Divergent & it had a lot of potential. Then in the second book the plot was a little all over the place and I began to really dislike Tris. My favourite characters are Four & Peter. One of the only parts of insurgent that I liked was the scenes where they broke Tris out of the Erudite place. & the third book was just awful. It was so dull, confusing, I didn't know who was who and what they were fighting for. I couldn't finish it. I did read some of Tobias' part at the end but how that dull plot lead to her death I have no idea.

Like I hate that it puts fanfiction in such a bad light. People genuinely think that fanfiction (because of After and 50 shades) is all about weird ass sex and just ughhhh. +kenzie THIS. That book was such a let down for me :( the fact that she even was referred to as "Belly" bothered me, and I felt like the whole series had this super bizarre child-like quality that didn't fit the tone of the books at all. It was like everyone talked to Belly like she was a five year old (probably because she mostly acted like a five year old). I will admit, however, that even though I didn't really enjoy the books, I read all of them in less than a week. Something about the series kept me involved even though I would never recommend them.

+BooksBooksBookss oh my gosh same!! Belly was just a main character who I couldn't relate to on any level. Also Conrad just made me wanted to rip the pages out of the book (a horrid thought, I know). He was so rude! I feel the only reason he got together with Belly was to make his mother happy. The only characters I enjoyed were Susannah and Jeremiah at some points. Jeremiah was very sweet! I also liked the side character Cam in the first book but he just disappeared. Also it was unrealistic af in the third book. Like Jeremiah cheated on Belly and then he's like "marriage will fix everything let's just run away from our problems". Nope. They acted like they were children when in fact they were supposed to be mature adults. Such a letdown.....

I barely even remember Conrad, except that he was super rude and acted like he was smarter than everyone. Yessss to everything you said about the third book! What a great message to send young people: "in order to fix a completely f'd up relationship filled with insecurities, unresolved feelings for other people, and dishonesty, WE SHOULD GET MARRIED." Ugh. Also, didn't they all end up on great terms at the end? Even though Conrad, Jeremiad, and Belly basically spent the whole series screwing each other over? I remember feeling like the whole love triangle thing would never have ended so amicably in real life.

About Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard i swear by her she is one of my favorite authors so i highly highly highly recommend that you continue on with the series with the second book Glass Sword. It was amazing. Honeslty i agree with you on TMI by Cassandra Clare. I've been reading those book and I don't like them NEARLY as much as i thought i would. I feel like a lot of the characters do thing that dont make sense, im not going to be specific just because i don't want to ruin the story but the series feels like its dragging and i'm only on book three.

I disagree with a lot of what was said about All The Bright Places. My reason is I think that sometimes, especially in young adult mental health, people don't take it very seriously, even adults and parents. I think the point is that sometimes the signs can be there but people don't pay attention. I think that the book did a really good job of portraying bipolar disorder in a way that could be understood by a large audience, which was very powerful and helped raise a bit of awareness I believe. I read this book before all the hype (which I was a bit surprised it got, tbh, because of the stigma it received). I do find it annoying that no one really received the help needed, but unfortunately that happens a lot in our society. It's sad, and horrible, but it happens. I've never cried or felt so moved by a book before though.
Anyway, that's just what I thought. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us.

I don't know, and I get that it was a mother daughter project but there were times where the writing seemed really immature and underdeveloped and sometimes pointless and I could tell it was probably written by the daughter. Like it would go on and on about what someone was wearing or just descriptions in general in a very shallow way. Does that make any sense?

Ariel Leigh I have still have to read the last book, but nevertheless I think they're okay, but not great. I started reading them years ago so I'm kind of attached to some of the characters and I think it contains an interesting take on magic, but UGH THE ROMANCES ARE TRASH. As of book 11 my favorite paring is the riding teacher (forgot her name ops) and that human guy who's her first love reincarnated. The romances between the teen characters are trash, especially Zoey's scandalous relationships. I still find the books funny, especially the silly and "immature" dialogue. I'm gonna finish the series and I think the magic element is good, but the series overall is just okay.

Okay, I'm going to have tons of people disagreeing with me:
I don't think that Harry Potter is as amazing as it's made up to be. Sure, the writing is great, and the world is wonderful and fantastic, but I just don't really like the plot as much? And some of the characters are a bit disappointing, too. Don't get me wrong though, I'm on the fourth book right now, and I do enjoy the books, I just really don't see how they're so popular.

    • @ResemeeC

Madelyn Hanes I think people like them because they read them when they're younger. I related to the characters as a child and now as an older reader I understand some of the complicated themes which make the series so likeable. And they'll always be my favourites because I loved them as a child.
As for the plot, it mirrors history. Maybe that's why you don't like it? Also, if you're not British (I don't know where you're from), many of the cultural aspects will be completely lost on you. In the American version so much was changed to the point where a lot of little details won't make sense.
At the end of the day Harry Potter is for children and when it's hyped up as a teen/young adult book, it will always be disappointing.

ohh okay i totally understand what you mean about like the plot thing. well for me personally, the whole thing with Voldemort is just kind of like a side thing you know? like it's very important, but to me it's not the main plot. To me the plot is just how Harry deals with his life and specially how the events that happen affect him. Since it's such a long series and it's literally narrated as the school years go by, i think it's more of a series to just read to get lost in. I think that's why for me it's a series that I do not recomment rushing on. I think it's best to just dive into the magic world for a little while and just kind of like check in on Harry HAHA it sounds so dumb but I swear it's the only way I can explain it.

I appreciated your insight into why popular books receive the hype they do, and why that hype doesn't always end up supporting the narrative's integrity. Thank you, Hailey!
Also, would you consider making a video about extended universes in the vein of Tolkein, Rowling, and Clare, whose series revolve around the same characters, places, and concepts, and end up lacking creative innovation because of it? I'd like to see your take on this.
    Have a lovely holiday!

NO! I'm so upset you watched the Vampire Academy movie, because it was awful. It was nothing like the book, and the movie itself was just plain bad. I can understand where you're coming from, but ugh the movie was just. Awful.

I see where you coming from in relation to the immortal instruments, past the third book I just felt like it was way to dragged out and I was just reading to finish it. It felt so slow by the time I got past that point, I can't even remember if it was actually slow actually I can't even remember the main plot tbh, haha. It's funny because I seemed to finish the whole hp series just fine.

I think it is. I mean, don't get me wrong, the magical vibes and stories are very nice, and I love the series, but idk, people tend to idolize the author, and she doesn't write THAT great, I mean she's good, but not excellent. Also, I think people aren't seeing the series objectively since it's "their childhood" or whatever, I never read Harry Potter as a child so I don't have that strong personal connection with it. I love the series but it isn't my favorite.

I think it's way overhyped honestly. All of my friends were like "It's so amazing!" And "you NEED to read it". So I started it and it was like, what? Now it seems like every single fantasy book is about some wizard boy who goes to this wizard school and saves the world somehow. Just my opinion.

see, i used to feel that way, so i stopped reading YA at all. sometimes i had to read one for a class, and i felt uncomfortable even liking one at all, because of the stigma i’d placed on them inside my head.
then, i needed a new book to read and i didn’t feel like reading anything that was particularly difficult, so i asked my librarian for a recommendation, and she handed me Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, and that book ended up legitimately changing my life.
it also changed my mind about YA. there’s a couple of good ones. not too many. not all the popular ones. but there’s a couple, so i’ve started giving them more of a chance.

Did you read past the first Vampire Academy book? I agree with you about it not being as great as it was hyped up to be but the second one really makes up for what the first was lacking. I'm so happy I didn't decide to quit reading the series because they later introduced my all time favorite characters. Adrian and Sydney are what really made up for the book for me with their unique character traits and their relatability. I just started the spinoff series Bloodlines and I like it so much because Sydney is the main character and she's a lot more relatable to me than Rose was. So is her love interest. I think if you haven't you should give the series another shot.
