    I just bought mine from Cabalas, it’s cheaper than the official website and fast shipping. But I wish the top part has a little opening so you could add charcoal or firewood. When my wife saw me cooking with it, she asked me why I put it upside down, lol.

    +1 for the smaller Weber chimney. I've got a gigantic one from Oklahoma Joe that is damn near its own grill, and useful for lighting an offset or a big grill, but more often I find myself using the small chimney from Weber. Usually it's a much more realistic amount of charcoal and it lights nice and fast. Definitely a very inexpensive investment that damn near anyone would find useful, especially for smaller cooks like this.

Furthermore lodge hasn’t discontinued the Sportsman’s they have announced on their Facebook page that it will return in 2022. They will likely sell two grills, this less expensive Kick Off, and the Higher End Sportsman’s Grill.
      If your only other beef with this grill is that it is not the Sportsman, well that isn’t really fair, because this grill has several advantages over the Sportsman’s, among them is this grill is easier to clean.

    Good review. I just don’t understand what Lodge was trying to get at with this grill. Maybe they’ll come out with a case or bag that will make this an advantage over the LSG for portability. I trust your opinion, I just might put one of these in the grill stable. Thanks again for another good video. The LSG is a tough act to come up against for any cast iron grill.

      It is bound to be easier to produce, only two casts required, the Sportsman’s would require six casts.

    How the hell does one wear out cast iron ?

    • @BigLewBBQ
      @BigLewBBQ  Před 3 lety

      There was an issue with the manufacturing of the grates in the Sportsmams grills manufactured circa 2011-2012. They flaked apart. The iron literally peeled off in layers after about four years of use. Go to Amazon and look at reviews from that time period. There are servers negative reviews in that era describing the same phenomena that happened to mine.

      @@BigLewBBQ I'm sure it's a nice grill. But certain aspects bother me hugely. I have been told often in my life that I think oddly, I notice things no one else does. But how do you add coals ? Lift the whole thing up and have hot coals fall out ? How do you keep it together in transport ? Why does the bottom plate look like it should be used as a cooking device. It just seems ass backwards. For sure at this point I would use a weber charcoal go anywhere or a smokey joe, or a jumbo Joe. My sportsman is in great shape but I'm going to keep my eye out for another one. The newer version again does nothing for me.

      I included the the unboxing portion because I figured some folks would be inquisitive about what was inside. I’m very sorry that I did not first consult Mr. Mike Cagle prior to shooting and posting this video. I’ll be sure to call and check with you next time. If there is a next time.
