    In my years in the deer woods I have seen some incredible things. I’ve had a young fork horn buck walk up to me and lick my arm. I’ve had a young mother walk her fawn to a bush ten feet in front of me and bed it down and walk away while she looked back at me as if trusting me with her baby.
    It’s amazing how these creatures can act.

    *It could be that this buck had its left rack tangled up in a fight or it could be in fact something more sinister. Since, there is no obvious symmetrical pairing which leads to alot of possibilities. I have actually found 2 bucks with only 1/2 a rack alive & grazing Carelessly. sometimes they heal sometimes infection sets in & eventually kills them. This one here seems to have a natural calm temperament or it may be traumatized from a previous battle. I own some property with some 300 white tail roaming freely on it in southwest texas. and if you run into one with 1/2 a rack then chances are you might find another bucks bones with an embedded 1/2 set not to far away. And all males including the female reindeer & the female caribou grow & shed new antlers each year. (Yes female) unless this buck is suffering from a left side skull infection, then nasty tick parasites..lyme disease & (CWD)..Chronic wasting disease can factor in & cause neurological & onset paralysis which could explain this bucks calm demeanor. I cant really speculate on a diagnosis for this beauty but only offer my personal knowledge & 1st hand experience.* ✌

      Something not right with this buck. I don't know if it's the rut but if it is that is a dangerous game to play with a buck at that time. Plenty of videos and stories of men being attacked by a buck and some of them were killed.

    • @DoubleBtmBouncer
      @DoubleBtmBouncer Před 2 lety +2

      While hunting one day towards the very end of the rut we came across a buck in a field. Standing up, head down to the ground, tongue hanging out. We literally walked up to it like these guys did. We thought it was a fake deer the game wardens put out as we were on a park boundary but we were on our private property side. The deer was totally exhausted from running does n breeding. We didn't think he was going to make it at all. I mean he was skin n bones but low n behold, a few weeks later there he was running does again as the next phase of the rut kicked in. These deer have a will to survive like no other. I've seen then out back in my yard with gashes in the back of their neck from either getting cut on a barb wire fence or gouged from fighting. I mean puss dripping down the side of their neck. He had to literally lean back on his hind legs to get down to the ground to eat. I put a small gravity feeder around a tree with high protein feed in it for him so he didnt have to bend down. Also we had like 4 snow storms back to back that year. I out out some regular hay with a full bail of 2nd cut western alfalfa. That buck would come in my yard, lay on the hay at dusk. Eat the western alfalfa and protein feed all night till sunrise. Then he would walk off into the wood line and bed down. He did that for 2 months. Then all of a sudden, there he was, standing up, bending his neck down to eat and walking around like nothing happened. We saved that deers life. Then I shot him the next year as a 155" 10 pointer. JUST KIDDING!! That deer is still around till this day. Hes about 6 1/2 now with a small 8pt rack maybe 120" but hes a fighter till the end. Also had yearling with busted hoofs hopping around out back eating. I feed these deer all winter. Give them about 30lbs of corn a day, 15lbs of high protein b16 feed and a 100lbs bail of western alfalfa on a pallet laying on the ground so it stays dry. I have about 30 to 40 deer out back every evening and not one of them ever thanked me for helping them through winter. Even tho they dont need my help, it still feels good to give back n help the 1 1/2 year olds make it through their 2nd winter especially if they were born very late last year and this years fawn make it through their 1st winter. I figure all the deer I killed hunting over the years, its the least I could do to give back yo them.

    I wouldn't draw any conclusions from what we've seen here. CWD is a decent hypothesis, but he has a nice half rack for an animal with such a serious, chronic disorder of the nervous system. He could also have been stunned by a collision with a vehicle. Many vertebrates change dramatically during the mating and ungulates become different beasts altogether during the rut. He could have been badly beaten, concussed, dominated, and left exhausted by a fight. He might be struggling with an opportunistic infection following injury and depletion after a fight. There are lots of possibilities. I would want to have that animal's brain screened for prion disease if I had harvested it for consumption.

    First impression is the buck isnt healthy and this may be so but is not necessarily the cause of this bucks seemingly strange behavior. I've had several similar encounters with bucks and does during the peak and directly after mating season or rut. I've had a buck follow beside me as I walked through the woods, also had a buck come up to me and push and poke me with his antlers not even knowing I was a human because I was standing in a scrape with doe scent and bucklure all around. They become kind of blind and lose their normal sense of fear or flight response and completely overwhelmed with breeding. That buck may have just been through a battle with another buck he has half a rack and his body looks fatigued and looks like he's all marked up from rut fighting. He finally got his wits and ran away in somewhat normal fashion..I think he was just a buck that got beat in the rut not really sick.

      You are 100% correct. During the rut, a bucks brain function is consumed by the need to breed. They can't process normal fear at the same time. I've seen bucks do some strange things during the rut. I had on walk right up to me after I hit it with a grazing shot from my black powder rifle, flesh wound only. He didn't even know he was injured, never reacted to the blast, nothing; just stood there looking for a doe in heat ( that didn't exist ). I'm just glad he didn't try to mount me. LOL

    That was incredibly dangerous guys. It was a good way to ‘get dead.’ A buck deer is a very strong animal and they are very unpredictable. Just a few miles from our home, a man was killed by a buck that he had raised from a fawn. I’m thankful that you young fellows were not attacked by that deer and I hope you never try something like that that again. By the way, I was raised by an avid outdoorsman in the Louisiana swamps, hunting and fishing from the time I was a baby. I’ve seen deer go into attack mode more than once for no other reason than I was in what they considered ‘their’ territory. I wasn’t trying to approach them, they came after me. Thanks to the Grace of God and my Daddy’s teaching, I avoided injury and death. Not putting you down, just offering some advice.

      Brian Dwiggins Bullshit. If an animals wants help finding food and approaches a human..is that not an animal wanting help and knowing where to get it? Plenty of animals have approached humans while injured looking for relief. Animals know hierarchy and there must be a recognition that humans are at the top. Nature doesn't exist separate from humans, we are part of the system and animals know where we stand in that system. Have you ever owned a dog that's stepped on a sticker/thorn that's came to your side and lifted it's paw in anticipation of help? Come on now...you're giving animals zero respect.

      Brian Dwiggins we snared a wild rabbit intending to turn him into stew. He was a very cute little guy with a white nose.... We ended up keeping him as a pet and calling him snuffles. After two years we released him back into the wild.
      he came back a year later when he was all cut up half alive from a raccoon or coyote trying to eat him. Even though he was wild he knew we were there to helm him he came back to us. We nursed him back to health over two months and we let him go again!
      The last time we saw him was one morning on our front lawn he was eating some grass with a beautiful female rabbit. He came back to say thank you!

    From the looks of his side, chest and left hip, he's been in a fight. The antler loss, if it happened during the fight, would have happened anyway, eventually, as they lose them every year between late December and early April, depending on the latitude in which they live. It would be unusual for a buck to be in a fight with another buck that late in the year, the rut being done long before. It was not wise to approach a wild animal with a set of 'daggers' like that. Hunters have been killed by 'dead' bucks.
