I think Shawn Ray said it that Haney was the only champ who ended his reign better looking than when he started. And if you look at the future he was right again.
I don't understand how many people just sweep Haney under the rug as he's a 8×Mr O with Ronnie too
Something something field wasn’t as competitive something something I eat lead paint chips. Haney was - and still is - fucking awesome.
I guess later bodybuilders get the nod for the mass and earlier ones for being more influential (mainly Arnold).
It's just an awkward spot to be in between.
Most bodybuilding fans hold Haney in very high regard. Hes definitely my favorite Mr olympia. Total class act and gentlemen on top of it...
He's the - er, let me think of his name... Ah yes, he's the Larry Holmes of bodybuilding.
Much better than everybody before him, long reign in the 80s, but never could get out of the shadow of 'The Greatest' who came befor him.
Stuck between the 2 golden eras of bodybuilding...80s is the forgotten decade really, not just haney, most of his peers too.
Wow, talk about Vince Taylor. He was ahead of his time for sure.
Yeah really underrated, shame he messed up his eye right before the 92 Olympia
@@davida6919 on the plane headed towards the Olympia, some luggage or sum shit hit his eye and couldn’t sleep because of the pain.
Haney's freaky body part was his torso. Even without notable arms his FDB pose is breathtaking. NEVER get tired of seeing it. Ditto his FLS. So damned good.
Greatest torso of all-time. Wide clavicles, tiny waist, huge ribcage coupled with a massive chest, From front to back and from side to side, Lee's torso was dominant.
Haney was just a beast and Vince Taylor looked insane in the back shots too!
Ah yes the return of the best bodybuilding analysis guy on youtube. We missed you
When you say "young Yates", they're only 3 years apart :)
2 years but Haney had been competing at the Olympia since 83, he had 9 years as a top level pro...Dorian started much later training..at like 21.
@@brooklynmitrica577 He certainly could based on age retirement, just 31. That said, his body had had endured a lot of abuse already and it may or may not be able to withstand the rigors of several more years of training and dieting.
But Haney had already been competing for years and Dorian hadn't yet
Huge Dorian fan here, but Haney gets this one for sure :) But Vince at this one, wow!
Lee Haney’s front double in the beginning of this video is absolutely sweeping the competition. All of those guys literally had no shot at this guys crown.
What’s sad is if you think about Haney’s health now compared to Ronnie’s. There’s absolute proof he walked away at the right time.
its because haneys training was laughable, he had the genetics+ being born in the right time period to not have to train hard or push peds to blow everyone else out of the water, ronnie on the other hand was just a monster and took every possible aspect of the sport to the next level and clearly overdid it, which is why you can see his physique deteriorating as his career went on.
"Let's get nasty!"
Was this a Tomn8er video? I can't tell, there was no Arnold intro. Bring it BACK tom.
@@JackHagar He needs to bring it back. It's the heart and soul of this channel.
Very fair assessment. Haney definitely reached a career peak with this title, his best package ever. Had he chosen to compete in 92 my hunch is he would have won his 9th Sandow. One thing is for sure: Yates came out of nowhere and provided the first real challenge to Lee’s throne!
Yates didn’t have any chance here, but it was an incredible debut, he came with that “dominant aura” , saying with his presentation “I'm came to win!”
I wouldn't say it like that Dorian still looked good and was able to compare very well but Dorian really wasn't pushing Lee so hard to the point where it could have gone either way it was still clearly Lee Haney in 1st. But a great debut for Dorian nonetheless
@@iambodybuildingyt221
Haney saw the writing on the wall. He knew Dorian was a threat and didn't want anymore of that.
@@angelmendez9365 Lee left because he had already broken the record 9f Olympia titles and had nothing else to prove, it was time for him to retire and why continue competing and risk losing and retiring a loser rather than retire a winner
Yeah Yates was so chanceless he even beat Lee Haney in mandatory poses
@@iambodybuildingyt221
Dude, you're actually arguing with Lee Haney himself.
He said it at a bodybuilding conference in 2012. You can actually watch it right here on CZcams.
He talks about the time he first heard about this unknown unbelievable big and conditioned guy (Yates) and then when he finally saw Dorian in the flesh and he couldn't believe what he was seeing and what he had to do to beat him, 'cause at the time, Lee knew he had the advantage because of the norms when it came to judging.
Then Lee talked about himself "not looking forward to face Dorian again and that he instead chose to go fishing".
ahh yes, my favorite bodybuilding channel! Thank you as always!
1:21 -- Haney's genetically gifted chest just absolutely annihilates Dorian's..... it's more apparent with the video footage.
scary thing bout lee haney he also had a back to match that front. And it all tied into an aesthetically tiny waist. He was truly gifted. Dorian didnt have Haneys genetics but he knew with enough mass and crazy conditioning, it wouldnt matter.
Jeez man I love your videos. It’s so nice to have videos made where there’s a clear purpose behind each one along with an in depth analysis of each pose. You’ve helped me improve my eye as a spectator.
Haney was awesome in this Olympia and was at his best. Dorian however was just starting out and would change the game of Bodybuilding forevermore after this Olympia and would bring about the Mass Monster era shortly thereafter. Haney won this Olympia but only just, losing out to Dorian on the legs but beating him on the upper body. Dorian was a SHOCK to everyone when he turned up here. I remember the huge buzz about him in all the gyms and in all the magazines. Haney was a great Champion and Dorian raised the bar to new heights. Both men are AWESOME 10/10
@@aleldiaz2547 It was great. There was magic back then that does not exist in Bodybuilding today 😢

Really great job on this comparison! Thanks for doing the video. 💪
0:13 Haney unbeatable. Simply perfect.
Superb video. Thanks for putting this together.
Haney and Dorian are class. Really shows how good the young Dorian was considering It was a prime Haney though.
All things considered, Haney truly was the greatest Mr. O. No questionable wins, dominated the competition, retired relatively young, and is still healthy and looks great to this day.
Great vid as always.....Taylor looked so good....I really think Lee Haney is the GOAT not just for his O years but for the way he has lived the post O years of his life too.....great trip down memory lane!
Haney all the way. The last true V-tapered Mr. O.
Sharp and informative as always tom great vid bro!
Haney at his best. Yates with an unbelievable Olympia debut
Awesome Tom. Please do more of these.
Great analysis....your videos are awesome....good hard work!
These videos are so good!💪🏻💪🏻
Great vid as always
This is why i subscribed to Tom !
While Dorian is known for his back, his legs back then were insane. I think the length of his legs kept him from having a more blocky physique
Very nice analysis! 👏👏👏
I enjoyed it. I’d like to see more Olympia revisited.
awesome video man
I know this match up and video is about Lee and Dorian but Vince Taylor looked so good I think this was possibly his best shape of his career 1991 Vince Taylor was insane he even looked better than Dorian in that back double pic in my opinion 🤯🤯🤯.
My goodness, all-in-all, this is just an aesthetically pleasing lineup..... just a joy to look at - especially after looking at all this 2020 recent coverage. Bodybuilding is one sport that's gotten much worse throughout the years.... Oh, and the NBA....lol. NBA sucks now compared to the '90s
I agree entirely. This is what I remember the Mr. Olympia intending to be. Men who still looked human but ridiculously big and cut. The guys today look silly to me. No man I know wants to look like any of the guys since Ronnie in the early 2000's. The last guy I remember looking like this to a degree was Flex. I like Ramy's story, his work ethic, etc., but I have no interest looking like him. The NBA needs work badly. 145-140 scores are stupid and the officiating is crazy soft. Wish we could watch the NBA guys play a game with no refs.
@@JeffSmith-eq3kc Arnold once said: judges should judge by how I wanna look and then best looking wins
Here it comes, here comes the night train! And I'm of the clan Yates for the front lats spread.
Just a note. I used to read all the BBing magazines back in the days of Haneys reign. The theory of that time was to covet a V frame. This is why you would see poses with the legs together rather than splayed apart. Look at Lees back double bi, and you see what I mean. Talk of the X frame was only just starting. Yes you still needed decent legs, but no one did the squat down back poses we see today. Rich Gaspari was the first to have shredded glutes but that was a novelty, not mandatory like today.
It would have been interesting to see what Lee would have brought the following the year if he knew he would be coming against Dorian once again. As it is, I think it was wise for him to retire, going out on top and staying healthy and injury-free and still have plenty of time to do other things with his life.
I missed this Olympia reviews
Lee would have defeated '92 Dorian but not '93 Dorian, because the criteria changed, and Dorian was the first Olympia Mass Monster.
Once again a great and very well balanced analysis. Regarding the debate of whether Haney could beat Yates in ‘92 and onwards, I think he definitely could. First he had age by his side and he also had those crazy genetics to his advantage. All he needed to do was to push the envelope in terms of size by consuming all that extra juice and he could have still been a force to reckon with post ‘91. I think he wasn’t scared, he was just smart enough to quit at a high point in his career and because he had already achieved everything every pro can only dream for.
I wish Haney wouldn’t have retired and would have put on more size. There’s no way he couldn’t have with the drug enhancements being made at that time. I would love to have seen him maxing out his potential and possibly posing in a more modern way (if he would have competed in the 90s). I just don’t see how anyone can say that Haney wouldn’t have improved he was only in his 30s at the time of his retirement too
Yeah but Haney might have ruined that small waist and great symmetry he had. I think he retired at the right time, before the age of the bubble guts started.
Great work my man!! I have to concur with your outcome. Lee beat him fair I thought because he just had that polish and experience over Dorian. I also believe that Lee could of held him off 1 more year but thats it.
I think maybe more than 1 year actually. Dorian played the mass game and it served him well but Lee really had it all. That being said, my friends and I used to follow the Mr. Olympia year after year in the 80's and early 90's. Since about 2002 I can barely stomach watching it at all now. It used to be awe inspiring seeing these men on stage, now it's honestly just horrifying what they've done to themselves. The mass monsters era has stripped the Mr. Olympia of it's former glory in my opinion. The last guy I really found to have the Mr. Olympia physique was Flex and he never even won one.
Per what Lee said and others close to him have said, once he broke Arnold's record...he felt like he accomplished all there was to accomplish. Lee had been competing since he was a teenager and was getting burned out so his final win was the ideal way to go out
Lee Haney (at the 2012 Master Olympia) actually admitted that he didn't want to face Dorian again. That he'd rather gone fishing.
The video's still up here on CZcams.
If he really wanted. He could have defeated him again. He had a superior Shape.
Taylor’s rear double bicep was amazing
I'd love to see what Haney would look like if he competed today with modern supplements. His frame looked like it was very capable of packing on quite a bit more size before his midsection would be compromised.
Haney won this contest clearly. The only journalist who disputed his win was Peter McGough, a completely biased “journalist” who was a personal friend of Yates and a fellow Brit. When he scored the front double biceps comparison “a draw” that showed how pro Dorian he was..Haney clearly won that pose. I remember reading in one of the bodybuilding magazines at the time that several of the judges were hanging out with Yates prior to the show, and this may explain how he somehow won the muscularity round, because Haney DEFINITELY won the majority of the poses. I’m glad that he retired after this contest and went out on top because I think they (the judges) would’ve robbed him at the ‘92 show in Helsinki, Finland.
On this day Vince Taylor had the best Arms in show.
I wish every CZcams made vids these good
Thanks buddy
We can't blame Haney for retiring after 1991. He got the record and was probably tired of competing all those years. He wasn't hungry for more and retired at the top of his game and in good health. If Yates didn't skip the 1990 Olympia we could've seen another battle between them but he did so it wasn't Haney's fault they only competed once against each other.
Haneys chest was killin dorian
haney is such a great ambassador another one who was unmatched in his tine as 8X MR O
Great review Tom.
Personally i think Yates won both lat spreads, besides the abs thigh and side triceps. The judges had him narrowly beating Haney on the muscularity round also.
Important to note that Haney didnt have a perfect score in the Symmetry round either, most likely Yates won the rear relaxed due to his better upper lower balance and much better calves.
Yates had a rather low score on the Symmetry round in 92 also, just barely edging out Levrone...which would suggest the judges thought he had better symmetry the larger he got, which is unusual since most pros are better in that regard at a lighter body weight.
For the record the posing round, i know you talked about it in the past also, it is scored( at least according to the ifbb criteria) 50 % phisique and 50 % performance-yes thats how the define it.That is why guys like Ronnie, Jay or Dorian did so well in this round as well.
The posedown was also scored separately then, and according to the ifbb they only actually score the quarter turns and mandatories, the "free posing" entertainment part is NOT scored at all, many including myself have thought that it was actually the other way around.
In this manner whoever wins the most of poses in symmetry and muscularity rounds will also take the posedown..its basically a repeat in one final throw of the dice .
Haney himself said he didn't want to try Yates again and that it was time to hang it up.
He talked about how he was blown away when he first saw Dorian in the flesh. He had heard about him, but he never thought he was that good, up until he saw him in person.
@@angelmendez9365 Haney could have taken Yates in 92. 93 is a different story.
In Yates's case he absolutely had better symmetry when he gained mass. His symmetry in 93 was perfect.
@@xaviervega468 his quarter turns id say were better in 95, he had wider back in the front and rear relaxed and was thciker from the side.Biceps being torn doesnt affect him as the arms are extended in these semi-relaxed poses, so the biceps is lengthened not flexed. If anything the triceps will matter in the symmetry round alot more than biceps
I think there was a interview with Lee in the last several years where he talked about a monster (Dorian) coming up, and he didn’t want to try to go down that road.
Yates Front last spread was his best pose. The rear last spread was cool with the low back Christmas tree.
Not gonna say that Taylor was robbed based on these two pictures which also showed him, but he won both shots imo. At least my eyes were immediately drawn to him. I feel he was a bit underappreciated throughout his career despite the fact that he had all the right muscles, good proportions, balance, 3D and some electric stage presence. But then again competition was tough. But still.
Anyway, all my thoughts have already been written down by my fellow viewers, so there's not much more to say here. In a nutshell: it was really close, Haney still won fair and square, he is the most underrated ever, Vince is also underrated, Dorian is a legend, I agree with your review. :)
Yeah vince taylor looked better. But you know what people say, it's a size game. From what I remember taylor was a bit of a favorite (after yates) for the title in 1992 but he injured his eye and had to take some drug, corticoids or things of that nature that prevented him from being in top shape.
If Vince had been 5'10 he would have smoked them both. He looked that good this show.
One of the best Olympias ... Haney wins, but no one else in that top 6 could stand next to him - except Dorian.
Personally I thought this, and the Night of Champions was Dorian's best look.
Lee Labrada had insane posing routine. Thierry pastels aesthetics were unbeatable. Extremely aesthetic Mr. Olympia Lee haney. Interesting more aesthetic early dorian. A Lot to say Vince taylor was incredible also

I just could"nt agree more!!!!!
This is more like it, Tom. A proper analysis. In comparison your Q&A seemed "phoned in".
I agree with your take, although I was often preferring Dorian just for the hardness. Clearly Dorian had better conditioning, and he was a more intelligent poser. Dorian Yates had/has a natural, dangerous, unschooled intelligence.
Thanks. And well, the difference is that in a Q&A where I'm answering 50+ questions, I can't spend 15min on each one 🤪

7:23 Vince smacking em both down 💪
Absolutely. If Vince had been 5'10 he would have taken this show easily.
I was there. Wow
Hell, this wasn't even close in my opinion. Haney destroyed him, and I'm still trying to figure out how Dorian won the muscularity round. The Judges were blind.
Haney was like a giant flex wheeler with weaker arms, would have continued to rule the 90s if he managed to increase his leg size
Yates' bompadour/mullet hybrid hurt him too.
is it just me or is there a trend with the best Mr. Olympias having sub par abs?
Yates was completely outclassed in 1991
Haneys v taper was insane.
I think Haney got out at the right time. He saw where bodybuilding was going and he didn’t want any part of it. Dorian pushed the envelope with the drugs because he had to make up for average genetics (by bodybuilding standards). This is 91 and this version of Dorian would have lost to 93 flex. Dorian pushed the envelope and the mass monster era began. Haney with his superior genetics and GH, insulin, etc. probably would have won a few more sandow trophies.
That's such a slap in the face. And by the way, basically a racist remark towards white people when you're claiming Dorian Yates didn't have good genetics lol. Are you kidding me? The man had super freaky genetics. Have you ever seen that picture of him when he was like 18 where he had a 12-pack abs go look at Lee Haney when he was like 17 or 18. He was skinnier and with a six pack and all that just like Dorian they look like almost the same guy except one's white one's black when you're saying he doesn't have good genetics yet. You want to give all these black guys all this credit for having great genetics. That's a slap in the face Dorian's the greatest bodybuilder of all time. No one and I repeat. No one could have beaten him in the mid '90s. I don't care who you wrong from whatever era he would have stomped them
@@BruceWayne-ri4wr 2003 Ronnie Coleman would have mopped the floor with him. 2011 Phil heath as well.
