    I feel like this style is such a specific look that the kinda people who'd want to wear it are people who would rather be more thrifty and make it themselves than spending that much! It turned out super cute and making your own you can personalize it to your own colour preference

      And real thrifty people would definitely re-use and match up different materials...and would not try to match the Gucci colors and could create a truly unique ruffle skirt... Been in my plans for a long time... I was going to attach the ruffles to each other but I actually like the idea of having a petticoat layer.

      I can assure you, Melanie, this sort of dress I would never wear in public, especially with those fabrics. It's extremely patchwork-esque and something you'd make for a doll, not a $4000+ skirt. It'd be a completely different story if it was in more consistent colour scheme with matching ruffles with lace trim on each layer, that's the kind of dress I'd rather dance in compared to this thrift-esque style

    When I first saw the picture of the original Gucci skirt I thought it was so ugly and over the top, but seeing it in movement completely changed my mind. It's actually very beautiful, elegant, fun, and eye catching. It makes a statement without being tacky.
    Again good job on the amazing work, and this time I really have to lift my hat off to the designer of this skirt. What a bold and ingenious design

    The weight of the tiers stretched your fabric a lot, making it not align when you tried to sew the back together. Your tip to use a heavier lining fabric was spot-on. I have been drooling over this skirt style for a few weeks, thinking I could cut up some vintage sheets, but not sure how to do the underlayer/lining. Thanks for demystifying that part. When I am able to go thrifting again, this is going to be one of my sewing projects. That's for showing all the steps and tips. Love it!

    The Gucci blends more. The colors are more muted and from the same palette, especially the second layer and the blue one. And it lies flatter. But I really like the fun pops of color on April’s version. It goes with the style of the skirt. I rewound and watched the modeling part at the end three times. It’s just so fun! And she looks just beautiful in it - as usual.

    • @bekahhaught807
      @bekahhaught807 Před 4 lety +16

      You could possibly achieve a more muted look by dying the completed skirt in a diluted brown dye bath. Or you could make your skirt from vintage/heavily used fabric. I have some faded bedsheets that are quite muted.........

I think that would work great for this. Same color scheme and similar florals but different enough for each tier. I think the bottom works well with the top but that's because the tones are similar. I applaud you for trying to replicate the Gucci skirt. In studying the picture of the Gucci skirt, each tier looks like it was cut out from a full circle, not a quarter circle (very large workspace required) then gathered. This creates softer fluting on the gathers. The fabric choice appears to be something like lawn but I would have to see it up close to tell, but at any rate, you have a very unique skirt.

      It's super easy; make sure the selvage of the fabric faces you and cut about couple inches into the fabric and then just tear the rest. This method works only for cotton and for other fabrics you tug the sides around the cut a bit and then pull the thread in the fabric to make a clean cutting line in the fabric. My friend told me that years ago and she learned it from someone who works in fabric shop. Just make sure the selvage of the fabric faces you, it won't work if it doesn't face you.

      Anna Joy it also works better with natural fiber fabrics like cotton and muslins, synthetic fabrics won’t tear as cleanly (I’ve made that mistake before!)

      @annajoy8409 Před 4 lety

      @@Betsyschugar I've never tried it with muslin, but that's a good point. It'd already been mentioned to use cotton for best results, so I was just adding to the answer.

    Best tip for gathers, zig zag stitch floss in-between the zig zig stitch. Gather fabric holding the floss, not threads. Stay stitch the gathers and press flat. So much easier to attach! 😉

    When my daughter was young I made all her clothes. One dress I made her had over 10 feet of ruffles. The dress was a size three child so that is a lot ruffles. I didn't do the two rows of basting stitches to make the gathers as I was too afraid of the thread breaking. I took a spool of household twine, the smooth white kind, and then held it in place and zig zagged over it careful to not stitch the twine. This proved to be my best choice when tackling such large amounts of ruffles as you then the stress on your thread is not as strong.

    My mother was a seamstress on the side. She always made my special event dresses. This skirt reminds me of a dress I had one year when I was 9 or 10 ish. It was only two fabric patterns but I chose a yellow and a purple that coordinated. It had rouching(sp) across the bodice, little puff/capped sleeves and 3 ruffle layers! Was super cute!
    I thought so anyway. My sister, in her mean teen phase at the time, did not lol!

    I love this tiered gathered skirt design. I first fell in love when I got a skirt from Uniqlo on sale for one 4$! Of course it wasn’t as gathered but it was essentially the same style. Recently I made a gathered two layer knee length skirt and I love it. I definitely agree it’s more difficult than it seems bc of all the fabric. It took three days! Eventually I think I’ll get a rolling hem foot. Also, The weight from all the fabric made the waist stretch and I had to add a tighter elastic for the waist instead of the original shirred waist.
    I’ll definitely be hitting up the thrift stores after quarantine for pretty fabric. And I’ll use tips from this video and a similar video by BlueprintDIY to make a future skirt. Excited to be drowning in fabric.
    Lol this is a long comment.
