    Description Source:
    en.wikipedia.o...
The first game in the series was released in 1990 for most popular contemporary 8-bit and 16-bit computer systems, the Amiga version being the most technically advanced[citation needed]. The game allowed the player to race a Lotus Esprit Turbo SE car through several (32 in the Amiga version) circuit race tracks of varying scenery. Two player simultaneous play (with split screen) was also provided, and a choice of audio tracks to accompany races.
Each track is lap-based and consists of turns of varying degrees, as well as hills and hollows which slow down or speed up the car passing through them. Each turn is indicated by a chain of road-side signs, and the difficulty of the turn is reflected by the number and density of these signs - a feature common to all titles in the Lotus series.
While racing, the players must manage their fuel supply, occasionally visiting the pit stop for refuelling. Also apart from overtaking the other cars, the racers must avoid various hazards and obstacles. These are dependent on the scenery the track is located in, and include slippery road on the winter courses, road blocks, slippery puddles and wooden logs.
The tracks are split into three race series, with different difficulty levels. In each race the player or players compete against 20 opponents. The goal is to finish each race on the highest possible position; if the player finishes a race within the first 10 places they qualify for the next race and receive points towards a final position on the high-score table. The names of the computer-controlled drivers are puns on the names of real-life racers of the time ("Ayrton Sendup", "Nijel Mainsail" and "Alain Phosphate" for example).
Unusually, the player's starting position in each race is the exact opposite of the position reached at the end of the previous one. This gives weaker players a chance to improve by starting in a higher position.
When racing in the one-player mode, the bottom half of the screen is unused and features a static image of the Esprit Turbo. In the two-player mode one half is used by each player. The two-player feature operates similarly to the one-player mode, except that only one player needs to reach 10th place to qualify both players for the next race.
In the Amiga version entering MONSTER and SEVENTEEN as names of players 1 and 2 respectively, reveals a hidden mini-game - a simple space-themed shooter, where the objective is to survive as long as possible while shooting rocks that fly around.

Top Gear (or Top Racer) for SNES is essentially LETC minus the Lotus license. The title song appears as the soundtrack of the 4th stage in every country.

I only added it because it was billed as 1. I know it's part 2 that's why I called it a spin off in the list sequence. Believe me ! I'm in a corner when I do these videos. If I don't add it, People ask "why not ?" And if I do add it I'm asked "why ?" ... So to cover my bases I just add them now. >_

Except this is a similar situation to how Dune 2 : Battle for Arrakis was labelled without a "2" when it was ported to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Lotus Turbo Challenger for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is a port of Lotus Turbo Challenger 2, not the first game and should have not gotten mixed up as such.

Thanks for showing the full screen 4:3 Amiga Lotus 1 experience. I know most Amiga games are NTSC compatible but compared to the ST version, the PAL version of Lotus 1 always looked squashed to me. Back in the day I used Relokick to boot the game in NTSC mode. :) I know it must be difficult to decide to show a game 1:1, or 'fit to screen' but back in the day we all had these displays fit our CRTs. Some channels (PatmanQC etc) use your work as reference, and for me full screen is better than 1:1, as Gameboy footage is the size of a postage stamp.

Specifically the Bordeaux theme? That theme is pretty much the same. Some stuff was reused from the Lotus games in Top Gear as it was made by some of the same people. I'm not that knowledgeable but they might have made Top Gear a different game to get around the the restriction that SNES games just not be on other platforms?

The Amiga has the best music and is the first place I ever played it but gameplay wise its not the best but not the worst.. I can't get over how much better the Amstrad CPC is compared to Spectrum and C64.. Amstrad wins in the 8bit category.. 16bit category joint 1st Mega Drive and Amiga.

The Genesis version, while it seems to be a playable behind-the-car racer, lacks the weirdness factor of the others. What were they thinking with the 'working on _a_ car at the bottom of the screen while you race,' I wonder, beyond having less screen to update for the racer portion. I suppose that it's 'ergonomic' to race at the top of the screen if you aren't going to use the whole thing, but that also seems weird.
I remember when this came out, but don't recall having played it on any system. Then again, I'm not really of fan of behind-the-car racing games in general. Who's driving the car?=)

    • @beezle1976
      @beezle1976 Před 6 lety

Not all, but probably 1/2 were, with the rest being made up mostly of aga (the 32bit chipset in a1200 + a4000's) games, some with added intros and/or cd music.
The a1200 (which the cd32 was, along with the addition of updated system roms and an extra custom chip) was seldom pushed either 'cos by it's release the amiga was commercially dying. Wasnt a huge upgrade, but significant still. Different levels of tech obviously, but the Gamecube and Wii is a good parallel, with the latter being basically a faster version of the former with a better graphics chip.
AGA = 256 colors/8bitplanes, which can be split to 2x16 color playfields (for eg. fullscreen parallax scrolling) with 8 sprites per line that are 64 pixels wide, by up to 270 pixels high.
A500 = 64 colors/6 bitplanes, which can be split to 2x8 color playfields, with 8 sprites per scanline that are 16 pixels wide by up to 270 pixels high.
The AGA chipset can also move data around up to 4x as fast as an a500 and the a1200/cd32 has a cpu roughly 4x as fast (although in practice its closer to 2.5x with some exceptions).
So, somewhat more capable without being an entirely different generation.
As to why I wrote this lengthy a response (and one that freely exchanges a1200/cd32 and aga throughout the elaboration, and uses "A500" rather than ocs/ecs based amiga with a 7.14mhz 68000), ergo probably not completely clear unless you know the machines)..........
      ..... OCD.
      I couldnt refrain :-)
