Toothless appearance was based off of an axolotl and his behavior was based off of cats and dogs
His appearance and some movements are also based on panthers and domestic cats.
I’m pretty sure toothless’ appearance was also based on salamanders
@@melatonin00 axolotls are a type of salamander but I believe you’re right in that other types of salamanders where use for appearance as well.
28:52 That's the reason Toothless is really scary. For some reason, many people pay attention to his cute appearance, but completely forget his description from the book of dragons. He dropped to the ground a dragon that was 15-20 times bigger and heavier than him, who also stood firmly on all four legs, with one shot. If you start to look into the details, then you realize that Toothless is a damn scary combat unit.
It's too bad the sequels changed up his model to make him more cute and less animalistic, so he's not as scary anymore when he needs to be.
I swear I saw this exact comment on another HTTYD first watching video, are you also binging them?
The Toothless spinning scene - yes, Hiccup helps control what Toothless does, but they have to be in sync or else they'll crash. Hiccup, although he doesn't want Toothless to be doing what he's doing and scaring Astrid, goes along with it because he knows that Toothless wouldn't go as far as to make them crash just to scare Astrid, they're not in danger so long as he goes with it. If Hiccup tries to make Toothless do something different, they could lose control.
First time someone points how astrid tried to save hiccup when she first encountered toothless :)

For the many years I've loved the trilogy, I never realized Astrid's heroic act of putting Hiccup's safety first than her own till today, and now I love that detail :D
Whether or not it was protecting the "weaker" person, or protecting the chief's son or even (in some fan theories) protecting the guy you had a secret crush on all work and all can be true!

Big cats do like Catnip. I've seen videos of Big Cat Sanctuaries giving them Catnip. It's cute to watch them roll around in it.
For the maiming of the MC, for the longest time after the first movie, the theory was that Toothless had to grab Hiccup by the leg with his mouth to be able to catch and shield him in time, and that's why he lost his lower leg. In the second movie, you get a very overlooked throwaway comment that confirms this, and I'll be looking forward to see if you'll catch it when it happens.
33:48 That's the problem. The perception around animation. Animated doesn't even necessarily have to mean 'family movie'. Like Robert Zemeckis' Beowulf or Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children or tons of anime films. It's just another medium.

So in HTTRD lore night furies are truly OP. They can travel at the speed of sound and there is some information that states that they can recharge their shots faster than other dragons. There’s many other powers he has but I won’t disclose due to spoilers.
If you're interested in seeing Hiccup's growth between the first and second film, maybe you'd be interested in checking out the shows on your own time? They are canon btw, and not only do they show how Hiccup matures and grows his leadership skills and gains confidence, but also lets you see more of his relationships with his father and Astrid and how they develop. If you want more Dreamworks Dragons content, I definitely recommend.

I saw this movie for the first time when I was ten, I'm now in my twenties and I love it even more then when I was a kid. Especially for things like the fact that it's the only animated "kids" / family movie I can think of with a disabled protagonist. The way they handle Hiccups disability is also very well done. There is a great moment in the TV series (highly recommend, has lots of great lore) where Toothless is trying to drag Hiccup to safety, but grabs him by his prosthetic which falls off. Hiccup proceeds to joke to the person next to him "how long do you think it will take him to notice". It's the mark of really great writing and humor when you can joke about a disability without punching down, and it being very funny to real disabled people.
It's so funny how reactors all see whatever species of pet they themselves have in toothless. The reality is he's base on a combination of so many different animals!
Just had to pipe in to say, there is a Dreamworksland! It’s in Universal Studios Orlando, I attended the soft launch last week, it officially opens 06/14! But unfortunately there are no HTTYD rides, only Kung Foo Panda, Trolls, and Shrek so far.

I’m glad that you mentioned the theme. The music for this trilogy was done by John Powell and personally I think that he did an absolutely amazing job at it, especially with the main theme. Within the main theme, you can pick out 2 primary motifs that each help to represent the two main characters, hiccup and toothless. The one that you pointed out at 28:42 is mostly know by the community as hiccups theme. Meanwhile the other motif known by the community as toothless’s theme can be heard distinctively at 4:54 and at 10:20. Although these times are when the music is the most distinct out of what was in this video, the motifs are used constantly throughout the entire movie sometimes played slowly, or somber, or sometimes John Powell even uses chords that are related to the main motifs in order to create a sense of panic and unease like when hiccup and toothless are falling during their test flight. In my opinion (and many others if I’m not mistaken), the best example of these two different motifs are when they finally come together in harmony during the song that plays over their test flight, aptly named test flight. Either way there are a large number of great videos that talk about the genius of this music a lot more in depth than I have already done with this paragraph of a comment.

25:28 Snotlout grew up knowing Hiccup and is like his brother from another mother hence why he treats Hiccup like shit only because he wants to be the next chief but he respects Hiccup it explains it more in the tv shows that come after this movie and before the second movie
In the original book series, Hiccup and Snotlout are actually cousins too
I love that they had consequences for Hiccup, but then also I love that now we have a disabled hero of a really popular trilogy and tv show!

Universal Orlando is building Berk with three rides, a show where toothless flies over the crowd, and a meet and greet with hiccup and toothless!
So apparently Universal is making a new park in Orlando that will have a How to Train Your Dragon area, with rides and such.
Next year Universal is opening a third gate in Orlando dubbed "Epic Universe" with an entire land devoted to the Isle of Berk, entirely themed after these movies. It'll be pretty neat. Also Nintendo world, a classic monsters land and a 3rd harry potter land. Exciting stuff.
Was coming here to say the same thing. I can’t wait for this land to open. Unfortunately they don’t have a VR or 3D ride that’s like you are on a dragon. 😢

The whole trilogy is amazing, they do so many things that you wouldn’t expect and I still love the movies after rewatching them all so many times. I think you will really enjoy the other movies.

The Secret of Nimh (1982), the protagonist sustained multiple injuries, including serious burns, in her effort to save her family. She didn't lose a limb like here, but she has to be the most physically weak and vulnerable protagonist I've seen in an animation, which only accentuates her bravery.
This trilogy is SO GOOD. You should watch them all!

11:30 probably just called a tail fin (also known as the caudal fin, but i dont think anyone has ever used that term for dragons from what ive seen lol). dorsal fins are on the top (and are the main fins you see and think about when you see a whale/dolphin/shark etc). its located on the back, in the middle of the animal. first one is bigger, closer to the front, 2nd one behind it. speaking of, i think they used manta ray references for toothless' design. very noticeable when hes flying with his wings and fins spread out

I’m currently a 28 year old female and I watched this movie in theaters way back in 2010. And this has stayed my favorite movie since then. Lord of the Rings is a very close second.
How to train your dragon and pirates of the Caribbean have some of the greatest soundtracks of all time.
Yes night fury’s have a shot limit of 10 shots and if you count the shots in the final battle he used his last shot to ignite the red deaths (giant evil dragon) insides on fire.
Alongside the 3 movies, there are tv shows and short movies in the same universe. I'd honestly recommend watching them all, even if just in your spare time and not on CZcams because I know that may not be feasible, but if you watch at least one of the extras I highly recommend the sort movie "Gift of the Night Fury". Its plot is briefly mentioned in HTTYD3, and it's just a lovely little movie in general.

The How to Train Your Dragon trilogy is my favorite animated trilogy.
no spoilers but in the rest of the trilogy a lot of the things you said that wont happen, happen, im not gonna mention what exactly but dont be too innocent or it will catch you off guard, the second one is even better than the first one, i recommend you watch all the trilogy, its one of the best trilogies i have every watched

the movie make dragon realist, they don't just shoot magic fire, they breath Gas that they ignite and it then turn into fire. that is why each shoot fire differently. it is more developped it the tv show which take place right in between the first and 2nd movie.

This trilogy is really good. My favorite DreamWorks film is The Prince of Egypt.
Big cats (lions, jaguars etc) react to catnip in similar way that domesticated cats do
Before watching the second movie, you should watch the two animated series ("riders of berk" and "race to the edge") firstly because tey're really worth the watch but also because there's a few years time skip between the first two movies which is the stories covered by the series (they have GREAT and DEEP stories and LOTS of cool dragons that barely appears (if at all) in the movies and some of them are absolute BEAST (want an exemple: look for videos about the "screaming death" ).
Definitely watch the other movies in the trilogy. They’re all great.

Ok, piece of advice: if you wanna watch the whole franchise, watch the shows next (Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge) and then the second and third movies. The shows are specifically made to fill the gap and expand the universe. Way too many people watch it in release order instead of chronological order. I can not stress this enough. If you want to continue the franchise, do the shows and THEN continue the movies. The shows are absolute peak btw, even better than the movies because of the extra time for character development.
