  • Arguable one of the best vintage lenses out there for your modern APSC sensor camera the Helios 44-2 58mm f2-16 is just simply fabulous on the Canon R50 - IT'S A BOKEH BEAST!!! The results just blow me away the more I use this lens on the R50. With the Helios "swirly bokeh" and unique sharp center focus pattern this lens has exceeded all my expectations. Simply I love this lens. I hope you enjoy this video as I really like making this type of content for other creators. I now get it - A CAMERA CAGE is a must. I have never owned a camera cage and thought this to be a gimmick but boy was I wrong! This IS the cage to get from SmallRig and I made a video about it here • BEST Camera Cage: for ...
I've been wanting to challenge my skills with the new Canon R50 and try out these lenses for this great camera.
All I can say is I'm impressed with the results and these lenses performed admirably well in low light and challenging situations.

I recommend you to replace the R50 with a R7 if you like APS-C. Especially for vintage and unstabilized glass, its a gamechanger. I never really liked vintage or unstabilized glass too much, but since i have IBIS, it made these lenses so much more enjoyable.
Sadly IBIS on canon is not affordable yet in FF except you can live with an "outdated" OG R6, but the existence of the Mk2 makes it a bad purchase as well. But the R6 II is for sure even better and more practical regarding to fast 50mm vintage lenses. On APS-C 50mm basically becomes a portrait lens mainly, where as on FF its a practical allrounder with slightly tighter FoV, 35mm on FF is pretty perfect if you dont want it too tight tho. I wish there would be fast, small and affordable 20-28mm primes in F1.4, at worst 1.8 for my APS-C R7.
I have the SMC Takumar 50 1.4, the radioactive 7 element version, serial number 5.555.565 or so, pretty awesome lens with character, very special at 1.4 (dreamy, unsharp as fk, but good look and best 3d pop i have in any of my lenses), very clean at F2+ and basically a "different lens". Thats what i like the most about.
I will also look into Helios 44-2 (M42) versions, the smooth aperture ring is what im most interested in beside playing around with the swirly bokeh :D

I love how you always make videos about the r50 I barely see any CZcamsr talk about the r50, and not a single CZcamsr has talked about it in such details, love the work brother ❤🤝

      Because its hard to recommend.
Anybody thinking about a (overpriced...) R50 i always recommend to check EOS M50, M6 Mk2 etc... not only the cameras are as good as the R50 more or less, but they are MUCH CHEAPER 2nd hand. The EF-M lenses are the only reasonable good APS-C lens pool in the Canon world with a huge variety of focal lengths, apertures and manufacturers, fair priced and you get more and more better deals since its a "dying" system.
I was for over 13 years on a budget (30-300€ lenses, 70-300€ bodies, 2nd hand ofc), and i know dealing with budget bodies and lenses good enough. The R50 is no exception and was, at least thats my opinion... inferior and outdated already before its release. What can be better than a low budget camera body for a super expensive, more or less full frame only RF lens choice?!
It was hard for me to overcome the issues coming from adapting at worst EF full frame glass on RF APS-C, basically completely erasing the crop camera advantage (smaller, lighter lenses). Luckily as long time canon user... im used to use full frame glass on APS-C at least and when i really want a small lens, there is the RF 50 1.8, RF 18-45 if the 18-45 is ever below 80€ 2nd hand i will get it for sure (had the RF 50 1.8 already but sold it with the EOS RP and change to APS-C)

As much i always tried to enjoy lower end bodies... (400D, then 550D, even the EOS RP!)...they had all too much downsides. Either from the beginning they were inferior and annoying (400D, 550D), or i switched my habits to a suboptimal fitting (EOS RP: slow, for stills only and i switched to wildlife and video later), just no to anything lower end nowadays except its 2nd hand and reasonable priced such as EOS-M cameras/lenses.
Since i got something slightly better... no, there is no way i would enjoy a R50 for my wildlife stuff (resolution, high ISO handling, speed, buffer,...). Also, i would hate to use unstabilized and vintage glass since there is no IBIS.
The change back from FF to APS-C made some other problems (RF 800 F11 much tighter, no astrophotography anymore since its a 750mm F4 and even on FF often too tight) but in general there is no way around a somewhat capable and "futureproof" camera body.
Hell, even the R7 i have i am thinking often about upgrading to something which can 240 fps slowmo, has better electronic readout speed for less or no rolling shutter issues, something with better autofocus,...

alternatively, if you dont mind not using RF lenses yet... EOS 80D, better EOS 90D, 2nd hand ofc is also an option and probably a better one. The 90D is basically a slightly worse R7 in video and has no IBIS.
I would rather recommend, if you can stretch the budget, directly to the R7, if it really works out for you, the R10 as well (but not recommended much), but on a budget i would recommend going for a 2nd hand EOS-M camera or even better.. a nice bundle which are often even very cheap with a lot of nice glass such as the 22mm F2 etc.
Yes, the EOS-M system is oudated and dying, but thats the advantage - you can get a pretty affordable, yet very capable camera system to begin with.
Since you are anyways for the first time film making, the lower the price you pay the better, if you realise you want to Sony, Fuji or Panasonic, your system change hurts much less.
I have the "bad luck" to be in the Canon EF ecosystem since like 13-14 years, except for adapting those lenses now to RF mount...i feel a bit betrayed by Canon but its a hard and expensive choice to change system at this point where as you cant care less with EOS-M, they are nearly at their lowest price possible, you wont lose much if any money even in long term.
Remember, if you want any special EF(S) lens... you can adapt it on the RF system as well on the EOS-M system! You are only locked out of the RF system with those EOS-M cameras, which is at least still a worse mount for APS-C bodies than EF-M/EOS-M system native.
