BEETHOVEN - Variations and Fugue in E flat Major, op. 35 (“Eroica”)
In June 2022, Yunchan Lim became the youngest person ever to win gold at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; his performances throughout showcased a “magical ability” and a “natural, instinctive quality” (La Scena) that astounded listeners around the world. The depth of his artistry and connection to listeners also secured him the Audience Award and Best Performance of a New Work (for Sir Stephen Hough’s Fanfare Toccata).
Just 18 years old, Yunchan’s ascent to international stardom has been meteoric. His final Cliburn Competition appearance with Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 delivered the defining moment of the three-week event; as one critic noted: “The applause that followed was endless: a star had emerged before our eyes” (Seen and Heard International). The video of that performance trended globally on CZcams in the days after, reaching #25, and has now become the most-watched version of that piece on the platform, amassing more than 5.5 million views in just one month.
Yunchan has performed across his native South Korea-including with the Korean Orchestra Festival, Korea Symphony, Suwon Philharmonic, and Busan Philharmonic Orchestras, among others-as well as in Madrid, at the invitation of the Korea Cultural Center in Spain. His 2022-2023 inaugural tour as Cliburn winner takes him across four continents, with highlights including the Aspen Music Festival, La Jolla Music Society, and Performing Arts Houston in the United States; Seoul Arts Center, National Concert Hall in Taipei, and the KBS and Korean National Symphony Orchestras in Asia; and recital tours in Europe and South America. - Hudba

I desperately hope someone makes a film about all Yunchan Lim's renditions so that classical music fans can listen to his music while he is playing in his teens. I don't want to miss his teenage music because it seems that the sensibilities and pristine innocence of this age make his music shine even more. At this level, it's better he reduces the number of concerts around the world and someone like The Cliburn gets a professional team for him to record in perfect acoustics, and then CLASSICAL MUSIC would be shown in cinemas for the first time. Considering the world's classical fans, I guarantee millions viewers will flock to the cinemas.

I am not one for superlatives, but Yun Chan‘a performance deserves all the accolades and applause. I’m struggling to put the words together. Just unbelievably genuine and transcendental.
Glenn Gould played these Variations in the 50s and 60s, but they are rarely heard these days. Yun Chan’s is big, full of colour and changes of character. His version of Beethoven’s Bagatelles Op 33-a study for these Variations perhaps? Big, ambitious in scale, not student material.

You can undoubtedly hear that he has worked and mastered Bach contrepoint. I had the impression at some points that he was playing some Bach. For me he is the top-notch pianist of his generation. Perfectly mesmerising 👌
Yunchan's teacher for the last several years, Min-soo Sohn, is one of the best interpreters of Bach performing today.

Eroica, one of my favorites, especially the symphony. I have nothing more to say, one of the best pianists to live in this generation, other than how delightful his phrasing is, his control and range in dynamics is extraordinary. He plays, and the rest is history.

Ater 3 months listening everyday more than 5 hours Yunchan's concerto, I noticed what makes him so special. He doesn't only play the piano, but also makes story and movie for 20-60min. Just indescribable! I bet, he also will be the greatest conductor and composer.

Insanely beautiful play by Yunchan that Piano itself comes alive.
The performance is more likely to follow the golden age of Romantic pianism that comes from the style of Muzio Clementi and Beethoven’s Eroica symphony.

그러나 수많은 피아니스트의 공연을 제대로 본적은 없습니다. 샤인을 본 그때의 감성이 살아나지 않았어요. 임윤찬의 라흐3번을 두달동안 몇번을 봤는지... 임윤찬이 내 삶을 흔들었습니다. 작곡가에서 연주가로 최애가 바뀌는 사건이 벌어졌네요, 그리고 그가 연주하는 모든 곡을 사랑하게 됐습니다,

I have been to The Cliburn since 1981 and blessed to see hundreds of marvelous pianists. Obviously there have been many deserving winners - I was floored by Kholodenko in 2013 and absolutely mesmerized by the blind Nobuyuki Tsujii in 2009 (I swear they was not a dry eye in the hall when he played), but this young man is truly beyond description! I hope he brings the joy of his incredible talent to the world for years to come!

32년전 동네 음반 가게에서 라흐마니노프 피아노협주곡 테이프를 사서 멋도 모르고 들었는데 지금 100년만의 이곡을 천재적으로 연주한 피아니스트가 한국에서 탄생하는 것을 목격한다. ㅎ~

베토벤 에로이카 원탑. 글렌굴드는 이미 뛰어넘었음. 배토벤이 직접 치면 이런 느낌이 아닐까 생각됩니다. 몸이 점점 아파가는 짜증도 섞여있고 천재성 어린 베토벤 느낌을 가장 잘 살렸다고 봅니다.
베토벤과 제일 잘 어울리는거 같아요. 내성적인듯하면서 끼가 엄청난듯요 ㅎㅎ 내 생애에 피아니스트에 빠져서 허우적대보긴 처음.

음색이 누구도 흉내낼 수 없음. 독보적인 소리. 밀고 당기는 소리가 쫄깃쫄깃하다고 해야 할까? 듣는 이가 음악과 밀당을 하게 만들어요. 여러번 들어도 질리지 않고 매번 새로운 느낌.

아마도 베토벤도 임윤찬의 연주를 들으면 어깨춤을 추었을 듯.
특히 19:12 부분은 마치 베토벤식 바흐같고, 21:25 부터는 베토벤식 모짜르트 같은 발랄함이 너무 좋네요, 물론 처음부터 다 좋지만, 이 곡을 들으면서 느낀 점은 베토벤이 인생의 아픔을 너무 많이 겪지 않았다면, 뭔가 해학과 재치가 넘치는 유쾌한 사람이었을 것 같아요.
물론 저는 베토벤이 어떤 품성의 사람이었는지는 모르지만, 그냥 심각한 베토벤(그의 초상화들이 좀 그렇잖아요)의 모습과 달리, 이 곡에서 느껴지는 베토벤은 쾌할함과 장난기 많고 짖궂은 청년의 모습이 그려져서 듣는 내내 즐겁고 미소를 짓게 되네요. ㅎㅎ

윤찬군의 연주는 악보의 재해석으로 다시 정리해서 들려주는것 같습니다..그동안 뭍혀있던 멜로디, 강약, 프레이즈 등을 이해하기 쉽게 풀어주는 마력의 연주를 해 주네요..그래서 어려운곡, 생소한곡도 넘 좋습니다..
저렇게 중간중간 비어있는 자리에 내가 있었어야 했는데 ㅠㅠ😢

반클라이번 경연장에 있던 클래식마니아들에게 윤찬피아니스트의 연주는 예상 못했던 큰 선물이 됐을거라 짐작합니다. 훗날 영광으로 남을 듯.
